Star of David Promotions thrilling fans in New York City In the last few years the New York City boxing scene has gone through a renaissance of sorts. With the opening of Barclay Center and the return of world championship boxing to Brooklyn, New York has once again become a buzzing boxing town. From world championship fights to club shows there is a lot of boxing in the big city these days. Former world title challenger, Dmitry Salita formed a promotional company in 2010 with the vision of putting on great fights & signing top notch talent. Salita wanted the company to be a microcosm of what he beloved New York City was all about and that is diversity. Besides fighters from the United States, Salita’s shows have featured fighters from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Poland and the former Soviet Block countries just to name a few. Salita, who is a immigrant from Ukraine has used his connections to recruit fighters from all over what was the former Soviet Union. Because of the many countries represented on Salita’s cards, he has packed houses from the many New York City neighborhoods where those ethnic backgrounds are densely populated. Another one of the staples of a Salita card is matching up fighters from the different boroughs of the city against each other. This creates tremendous excitement and electricity in the stands. Salita has developed and featured local favorites such as undefeated American Heavyweight sensation Jarrell Miller, Junior Middleweight Steve Martinez.Lightweight Dimash Niyazov, Russian Cruserweight Alezey Zubov just to name a few. Salitas “Brooklyn Brawl” series has produced some of the best local fights in recent times. Late in 2013, Niyazov and Raphael Luna fought a toe to toe war, which was hailed by many as one of the best fights in New York City in recent memory. Later in the year a fight for the WBC International belt saw two undefeated fighters Junior Wright and Steve Bujaj engage in a toe to toe war. A fight most boxing fans are calling a fight of the year candidate Because of the high quality of the fights, one of the largest sports networks, MSG decided to air the fight on a tape delayed basis. With the fight being televised, it provided a service to not only New York fight fans but the fighters themselves as they received extra exposure and it has proved for motivation that future events would be carried by the network. With major fights being staged at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, Star of David Promotions may in fact offer up the best in-ring action..

Toward a Comprehensive Policy Planning for R u s s i a n - Speaking Jews in North America Project Head Jonathan D. Sarna Contributors Dov Maimon, Shmuel Rosner In dealing with Russian-speaking Jews in North America, we face two main challenges and three possible outcomes. CHALLENGES: 1. Consequences of disintegration of the close-knit immigrant society of newly arrived Russian-speaking Jews. 2. Utilizing the special strengths of Russian-speaking Jews for the benefit of the wider American Jewish community. POSSIBLE OUTCOMES: 1. The loss of Jewish identity and rapid assimilation. 2. An adaptation of American-Jewish identity (with the benefits and shortcomings associated with it). 3. A formation of a distinctive Russian-speaking Jewish identity strong enough to be further sustained. There is a 10 to 15-year window of opportunity for intervention with this population. There is also a need to integrate, in a comprehensive manner, organizations to positively intervene in the field. At this preliminary stage, several recommendations stand out as urgent to address this population’s needs: - An effort on a national scale to assist the communities that are home to the majority of Russian-speaking Jews. - Funding for programs that will encourage Russian-speaking Jews to move into Jewish areas. - Special programs to promote in-marriage. - Dialogue mechanisms for Russian-speaking Jews in Israel, the US, Germany, and the Former Soviet Union. - Programs building on Russian-speaking Jews’ sense of peoplehood to bolster ties among all Jews to Israel. - Possible reciprocity between Jewish education and education in science and math for Russian-speaking Jews ("Judaism for math").

Sometimes Ruby Goldstein, a contender, will be added, and more infrequently "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom, a great light-heavyweight champion. And there it ends. Even knowledgeable sports fans have no notion that there were many outstanding Jewish champions and contenders, and thousands of Jewish boxers in the twenties, thirties, and even forties. "How was it possible?" they will ask. "It is so contrary to Jewish tradition and culture. It is astounding." In fact, Jews entered the ranks of American boxing in large numbers and by 1928, were the dominant nationality in professional prizefighting, followed by the Italians and the Irish. Ten years later, Jews sank to third place, preceded by the Italians and the Irish. When World War II ended and the G.I. Bill of Rights and other avenues of advancement became available, boxing was no longer attractive to the Jews as participants. By 1950, there were virtually no Jewish boxers, and their number has been minuscule ever since. A similar decline occurred among Jewish trainers, but Jewish managers, promoters, and matchmakers continue to maintain a presence. On the surface, it seems unlikely that Jews ever participated in such a brutal sport.

Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies The Muslim News: Playing Muslims in the Media Pitch, Penalties and Sport Champions Samar Samir Mezghanni Girton College University of Cambridge This Dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2018 Abstract The Muslim News: Playing Muslims in the Media Pitch, Penalties and Sport Champions Samar Samir Mezghanni The portrayal of Muslims in British mainstream media, particularly newspapers, is a subject of significant academic interest. Previous studies find that British newspapers frequently represent Muslims as a distinct and homogenous group, associating them with terrorist groups and framing them as a cultural threat. Orientalist representations have been observed, depicting Muslims as inherently problematic. Nevertheless, Muslims’ own self-representation remains understudied and underexamined. This research analyses the discourse of the Muslim News, the oldest, most enduring English- language newspaper catering to Muslims in the United Kingdom. Using Corpus Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis, this thesis explores the similarities and differences in the discourses of the Muslim News and British mainstream newspapers from 1998 to 2009. The findings reveal that, while reproducing some narratives observed in mainstream press, the Muslim News (the MN) is introducing new representations that ‘pitch’ alternative stories about Muslims in the media. While sustaining certain representations, such as the collectivisation of Muslims, the MN challenges mainstream discourse. It highlights Islamophobic attacks that Muslims are subject to, including their negative portrayal in mainstream press, and suggests that these hegemonic representations are part of a ‘Muslim penalty’. Furthermore, the MN counters mainstream news by taking Muslims outside the frames of representation that associate them with terrorism, conflict and violence.
