WEIMARPOLIS, Multi-disciplinary Journal of Urban Theory and Practice Vol. 1, Issue 2, pp. 53-64, ISSN 1869-1692 City of Displacement: On the unsteadiness of Berlin sites and sights1 Marc Schalenberg Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies Email: [email protected] Abstract This essay starts from the observation that the city of Berlin, throughout the 20th century, has been particularly prone to shift buildings in their entirety or in parts to other sites. These shiftings have to be seen against their specific backgrounds, such as war destruction, technological refurbishment, myth making, symbolic or memory politics by the respective political regime, resuming the “spirit” or name of a place for reasons of identification or marketing. But beyond those, the disposition to translocate can be understood as symptomatic in a city whose narratives, images and practices have been explicitly oriented towards the “new”, “unsteady” and “shiftable”. Attempts to remove material objects – not less than their meanings – are to be found in completely diverse political and cultural contexts. It seems an interesting challenge, therefore, to transcend the level of individual instances of displacements and try to test some concepts recently suggested in Urban Studies, like “habitus” or “intrinsic logic” for Berlin. A Brief History of the British Psychoanalytical Society
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PSYCHOANALYTICAL SOCIETY Ken Robinson When Ernest Jones set about establishing psychoanalysis in Britain, two intertwining tasks faced him: establishing the reputation of psychoanalysis as a respectable pursuit and defining an identity for it as a discipline that was distinct from but related to cognate disciplines. This latter concern with identity would remain central to the development of the British Society for decades to come, though its inflection would shift as the Society sought first to mark out British psychoanalysis as having its own character within the International Psychoanalytical Association, and then to find a way of holding together warring identities within the Society. Establishing Psychoanalysis: The London Society Ernest Jones’ diary for 1913 contains the simple entry for October 30: “Ψα meeting. Psycho-med. dinner” (Archives of the British Psychoanalytical Society, hereafter Archives). This was the first meeting of the London Psychoanalytical Society. In early August Jones had returned to London from ignominious exile in Canada after damaging accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct in relation to children. Having spent time in London and Europe the previous year, he now returned permanently, via Budapest where from June he had received analysis from Ferenczi. Once in London he wasted no time in beginning practice as a psychoanalyst, seeing his first patient on the 14th August (Diary 1913, Archives), though he would soon take a brief break to participate in what would turn out to be a troublesome Munich Congress in September (for Jones’s biography generally, see Maddox [2006]). Jones came back to a London that showed a growing interest in unconscious phenomena and abnormal psychology. -

Grams Athabasca University [email protected] Abstract Louis Hamilton (1879–1948) was a British national that lectured at various institutions of higher learning in Berlin from 1904–1914, and 1919–1938. During the Third Reich (1933–1945) Hamilton was accused of being half-Jewish and his continued presence at institutions of higher learning was considered undesirable. Hamilton like other foreign born academics was coerced to leave Germany because the Nazi educational system viewed them as being politically unreliable. Hamilton’s experiences are an illustration of what foreign academics suffered during the Third Reich. The purpose of this article is to shed new light on the fate of foreign academics in Nazi Germany. Although the fate of Jewish professors and students has been researched non-Jewish and non-Aryan instructors has been a neglected topic within the history of Nazism. When I was asked to speak to you on Irish Literature, I was intensely eager to accept at this time because the invitation coincided with the realization that this year is the 50th anniversary of the death of the great Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Yeats was the dominant figure, during his lifetime, not only on the Irish scene, but on the broader stage of English language letters. Also of interest, is the connection between Yeats and the movement now known as the Irish Literary Renaissance which he founded, and Rhode Island. More on that subject anon. -

Downloaded by [New York University] at 03:54 14 August 2016 Journeys in Psychoanalysis Spanning six decades, this collection, Journeys in Psychoanalysis: The selected works of Elizabeth Spillius, traces the arc of her career from anthropology and entering psychoanalysis ‘almost by accident’, to becoming one of her generation’s leading scholars of Melanie Klein. Born in 1924 in Ontario, Canada, Elizabeth arrived at the London School of Economics for postgraduate studies in the 1950s and soon embarked on a ground- breaking study of family life in the East End of London that produced a PhD and her fi rst book, Family and Social Network, under her maiden name Elizabeth Bott. Published by the Tavistock Institute in 1957, it remains one of the most infl uential works published on the sociology of the family. These papers are a testament to the luminous intellect and understated compassion that Elizabeth has always brought to her work. They vividly map not just the evolution of Elizabeth’s career but the development of Melanie Klein’s thought, often drawing in compelling fashion on the writer’s own experiences with her patients. Each is written with the clarity and concision that makes diffi cult concepts eminently comprehensible to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychother- apists and laymen alike. Elizabeth Spillius studied general psychology at the University of Toronto (1945), social anthropology at the University of Chicago, the London School of Economics and the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations (1945–1957) and psychoanalysis at the Institute of Psychoanalysi s in London (1956 to the present). “Baroque”: a Term Used in the Literature of the Arts with Both Historical and Critical Meanings and As Both an Adjective and a Noun
003_Baroque.doc READINGS: BAROQUE Background: “Baroque”: A term used in the literature of the arts with both historical and critical meanings and as both an adjective and a noun. The word has a long, complex and controversial history (it possibly derived from a Portuguese word for a misshapen pearl, and until the late 19th century it was used mainly as a synonym for `absurd' or `grotesque'), but in English it is now current with three principal meanings. Primarily, it designates the dominant style of European art between Mannerism and Rococo. This style originated in Rome and is associated with the Catholic Counter-Reformation, its salient characteristics--overt rhetoric and dynamic movement--being well suited to expressing the self- confidence and proselytizing spirit of the reinvigorated Catholic Church. It is by no means exclusively associated with religious art, however, and aspects of the Baroque can be seen even in works that have nothing to do with emotional display--for example in the dynamic lines of certain Dutch still-life paintings. Secondly, it is used as a general label for the period when this style flourished, broadly speaking, the 17th century and in certain areas much of the 18th century. Hence thus phrases as `the age of Baroque', `Baroque politics', `Baroque science', and so on. Thirdly, the term `Baroque' (often written without the initial capital) is applied to art of any time or place that shows the qualities of vigorous movement and emotional intensity associated with Baroque art in its primary meaning. Much Hellenistic sculpture could therefore be described as `baroque'. The older meaning of the word, as a synonym for `capricious', `overwrought' or `florid', still has some currency, but not in serious criticism.
