Volume 21 Issue 8 Our 20th year August 1, 2021 What could be better than a red 1949 Cosmo Convertible? Why, not much, says Nels Woods, happy owner of this big red beast. In his four-decade career, Spielberg has been admired for making blockbusters such as Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Indiana Jones series (1981, 1984, 1989, 2008), Schindler’s List (1993), Jurassic Park series (1993, 1997, 2001, 2015), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Lincoln (2012) and many other smash hits. Spielberg’s life as a filmmaker has been so brilliant that it looks like no one believes that there was any moment he spent at the bottom of the ladder in the movie industry. Much to the surprise of the skeptics, Spielberg was once just another director at Universal Television for the first couple years after launching himself into the cinema making world. Learning how to make good movies by trial and error, Spielberg made a breakthrough with his second feature-length telefilm Duel (1971) at the age of 25 and advanced into the big screen, where he would direct and produce more than 100 movies, including many great hits and some commercial or critical failures, in the next 40-something years.

  • STEEL MAGNOLIAS Artistic Team ROBERT HARLING
STEEL MAGNOLIAS Artistic Team ROBERT HARLING (Playwright) made his directorial debut with The Evening Star for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. The Evening Star reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson, and Marion Ross. The Evening Star is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, Terms of Endearment. Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play Steel Magnolias, which was based on events from his personal life. Steel Magnolias continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular film of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much sought-after screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include Soapdish, which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr., and First Wives Club for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton. LAURA KEPLEY (Director) is in her third season as Artistic Director and has directed Cleveland Play House mainstage productions of The Good Peaches (world premiere), The Crucible, Fairfield (world premiere), The Little Foxes, Venus in Fur, Good People (also at Syracuse Stage), A Carol for Cleveland (world premiere), In the Next Room, or the vibrator play, My Name is Asher Lev and CPH readings of Roe Green Award- winning plays Soups, Stews and Casseroles: 1976, Marjorie Prime and Daphne’s Dive.

A native of Cambridge, Ohio and a 1985 graduate of Cambridge High School, saxophonist Gordon Hough (pronounced Huff) has spent over half of his life cruising on the high seas being fortunate enough to experience the world through his musical abilities. During his high school years, he was president of his Sophomore and Junior classes, a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club during his Junior and Senior years and additionally in his Senior year, he was honored to be president of the award winning CHS band. Hough attended private music lessons each summer in Columbus with a Capital University music professor to extensively study a variety of performance and music writing aspects. He successfully completed all of these college level books and assignments prior to attending college. Upon graduating from CHS, Hough attended Capital University on music and academic scholarships for a year and a half before making the big decision of leaving the University early due to conflicts with school commitments and his professional performing with the Guy Lombardo Orchestra. While Hough is mostly known for playing the alto and tenor saxophones, especially in local groups such as The Dick Simcox Big Band, The Cambridge City Band, The Lion’s Variety Show and playing the “Benny Hill Theme” at various CHS games, he also plays soprano sax, clarinet, flute and piano as well as composes, orchestrates and arranges. Hough’s cruise experience started first with Carnival Cruise Lines however, after 2 ½ years, he moved onto Princess Cruises which was the summer of ‘89. During this time, he has moved up the chain of command in the cruise industry from sideman to bandleader to Bandmaster/Musical Director which is the equivalent of a two stripe Officer.
