The Chanukah Song (We Are Lights) A lamp that kept on burning, We are lights! A miracle, they say: We are lights! But the world has kept on turning, We are lights….shining on and on! Are there miracles, today? A row of burning candles, Everyone who lights the candles, Shines light upon your face, Has a bit of ancient spark. Linking you and me and all of us, We are miracles, lighting up the dark. To a far off holy place.

Chorus: But the blazing of the candles, We are lights, lights of memory, Is not the only light. Remembering times long gone. Look at all of us, shining here tonight! We are glowing, growing miracles. Chorus:

Want to help Puerto Rico? Operation Aqua is providing a reliable source of safe drinking water to families across Puerto Rico. CBST member and AFT President Randi Weingarten is spearheading this effort in conjunction with AFT, AFSCME, Operation Blessing International, and the Hispanic Federation. The goal is to purchase and distribute 100,000 individual water filtration systems for households and classrooms, and 50 large- capacity clean-water devices to a network of nonprofit organizations, union offices, schools and other community-based groups to provide stable and reliable sources of safe water. A $30 contribution provides an in-house purifier that requires no electricity and provides 10+ gallons of safe water per day to a family. $5,000 delivers a generator that can disinfect 150,000 gallons per day, enough safe water for thousands. For donations and more information: https://www.aft.org/operation-agua

Sanctuary Initiative at CBST: Are you a lawyer? If so, please mark Monday January 8 on your calendar for an immigration legal training at CBST. If you aren’t able to do weekday accompaniments, consider volunteering for the New Sanctuary Coalition Tuesday evening legal clinic - no special training needed! Join Rabbi James on Tuesday evening, January 9 from 6-9pm to see this mitzvah in action.

Be a part of the #LEDChallenge During the Chanukah season, we can once again light up the world. The Green Team at CBST joins the Natural Resources Defense Council's #LEDChallenge. One LED lightbulb can last 15 to 25 years: a typical incandescent costs $5.74 a year to own and operate, compared to only $1.34 for an LED. Learn more about the benefits of switching at https://cbst.org/content/cbsts-green-team!

Become part of the movement: switch one light bulb in your home, then take a photo of yourself with the bulb, post using #LEDchallenge, and tag CBST! Or email us at [email protected]. We'll tally our community's efforts, letting you know, as Chanukah approaches, how bright our light shines.

On December 4, the CBST community celebrated 25 years of leadership by Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum. The keynote speaker, the Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, spoke of Rabbi Kleinbaum's social activism and her passion for tikkun olam. Nearly 700 people attended the celebration and over $2.3 million was raised to help complete the Home of Our Own Capital Campaign. We are now just $300,000 shy of the $24.5 million total project cost. This month, new contributions to the Capital Campaign will be matched dollar for dollar by a $50,000 commitment from Esteban and Heymi Kuriel.
