Making Shabbat at Home MAKING SHABBAT AT HOME For December 25, 2015 and January 1, 2016 We don't like to ever close our doors on a Friday evening. However, these are Friday evenings, as part of the flow of American life and culture at this time of year, during which many regular Beth Shir Shalom Shabbat attendees are busy with other plans or out of town. We invite you to share Shabbat with family and friends with the help of this material. MUSIC: These prayers and songs can be accessed at our website, www.bethshirshalom.org Candle lighting Blessing of Children ("On This Day and All the Time" - a form of the Priestly Blessing for Children © Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels) Kiddush Motzi Shema Adonai Sefatai Tiftach (Music and English lyrics © Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels) THE FOLLOWING TEXTS: Shabbat Blessings V’ahavta (The best translation ever!) ON THIS DAY AND ALL THE TIME © 2008 Neil Comess-Daniels To be a mommy or a daddy Is so terrific And it’s strange ‘Cause every day there’s so much different Every day there’s so much change Yesterday you were so little Like a kitten or a pup Today, my friend, you’re so much bigger Today, my friend, you’re growing up Every second I spend with you Is like a tiny butterfly I hold her gently in my hands Before she’s goes and flutters by I see her smile; I watch her dance Pretty paintings on her wings And feel her heart go beat, beat, beat Before she’s gone... I hear her sing... Moms and Dads have always felt this From forever and before At times like these we say we love you And we want to do a little bit more In these very special moments Like the one we’re in today We place our hands upon your heads And all our dreams came out that way... May Everything-There-Ever-Was and-Is Smile for you a great, big smile May you be snuggled-up and safe On this day and for a long, long while And even though we both know it’s so You’ll cry some tears every now and then I hope there’s light in any darkness And many hugs in all your whens. And every place you’re in and go May you know folks so good and kind May you make peace inside and around you On this day and all the time. • Festival of Lights
Happy Hanukkah FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Created by Ash Akhtar on behalf of the Rise Network What’s in this guide? What’s Hanukkah and what’s the story of Hanukkah? 03 How’s Hanukkah celebrated? 04 How to get involved? 07 Reflections on the Jewish holiday by Robert Cohen 08 Colouring activities for the kids and the adults 10 2 What is Hanukkah? Hanukkah is the Jewish Festival of Lights, and in 2020 begins on the evening of Thursday 10 December. The word 'Hanukkah' means 'dedication' in Hebrew. It celebrates a miracle that happened in Jerusalem over 2,000 years ago. What's the story of Hanukkah? The festival marks the victory of a group of Jews called the Maccabees over the Syrian Greeks, the most powerful army of the ancient world. At the end of the three-year war, the Maccabees recaptured Jerusalem and rededicated the temple. When the Maccabees rededicated the temple, they discovered a single cruse of oil (a cruse is a jar or a pot for holding liquid such as water or oil) with the seal of the High Priest still intact. When they came to light the eight-branched temple candelabrum, the menorah, they had enough oil to last only a day. But the menorah miraculously stayed alight for eight days, which became known as the miracle of the oil. • Here's a quick overview of the Hanukkah story. 3 How is Hanukkah celebrated? Over eight nights, families get together to say prayers, light the Hanukkah candles, eat special holiday foods, play games and give each other small gifts.
