VISTA DEL MAR TOY DRIVE

DO YOUR HANUKKAH SHOPPING EARLY!

Help make Hanukkah a time of celebration for children in residence at Vista Del Mar.

Vista Del Mar began in 1908 as the Jewish Orphan’s Home of Southern California. Since that time it has grown and changed, and now deals with victims of child abuse, neglect, abandonment, domestic violence, and family dysfunction. Their residential treatment program now provides home-like living on its grounds in West Los Angeles for children aged 6 through 18 who are unable to reside with their families.

Over the past fifteen years, Temple Sinai of Glendale members have contributed toys and gifts to help these kids who cannot be with their families celebrate the holidays— once again this year they are in need of new unwrapped toys, games and other gifts for the children in residence there.

Please help by shopping for these kids when you do your own holiday shopping. We will have a bin in the north hall of the synagogue through December 8th. Do your shopping early, and add something for the kids at Vista Del Mar.

Thanks in advance for your contributions.

For Monday, December 8, 2014 Mary Coin by Marissa Silver We’ve all seen the haunting photograph Migrant Mother taken by Dorothea Lange in 1936. That photo was the basis for this fictional novel about Mary Coin, the migrant mother and Vera Dare, a photographer and their lives. Separate except for a brief crossing of their paths, which changed their lives and those of succeeding generations. Silver’s searching of the souls of her characters brings them alive for us as we wonder how we would fare if we were in their place.

For Monday, January 12, 2015 Bee Season by Myla Goldberg You’re Saul Naumann, a scholar and cantor who longs to discover the mystical states of Kabbalah. You take pride in your son’s brilliance but are discouraged by your daughter’s lack of interest. The Naumann family’s life changes abruptly when Eliza, the indifferent nine year old daughter wins the school spelling bee. Her change and the change in each of her parents and brother are the crux of this novel. For her father, she becomes his hope, for her mother, a secret vice and madness follows and for her brother, his loss of attention from his father sends him on a quest. Their longings, interactions and the coming of age of Eliza will entrance you. December 2014 The Scribe 30
