It is also the sides' first fixture, and only a second pairing with a club from their opponents' country for each. Form guide Salzburg • Salzburg are looking to secure a third successive group stage campaign. They were third in their section behind Liverpool and Napoli in 2019/20, having qualified automatically to make their first group appearance since 1994. • In 2020/21, Salzburg beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the play-offs before again finishing third in their group, picking up four points in Group A. They lost both games against Bayern München and Atlético de Madrid, but won 3-1 at Lokomotiv Moskva after a 2-2 home draw to finish ahead of the Russian club. • A side coached by Jesse Marsch therefore moved into the UEFA Europa League, where they lost 2-0 at home and 2-1 away against eventual winners Villarreal in the round of 32. It was the second successive European campaign in which Salzburg had been eliminated at that stage following their 2019/20 loss against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-4 a, 2-2 h). • Salzburg won 5-2 on aggregate against Maccabi in last season's play-offs (2-1 a, 3-1 h) to end a run of 13 successive eliminations in UEFA Champions League qualifying since their first group stage appearance in 1994/95. • Their record in UEFA Champions League play-offs is now W1 L5, the most recent defeat on away goals to Crvena zvezda in 2018/19 (0-0 a, 2-2 h). At the same stage of the UEFA Europa League, it is W3 L1, their solitary defeat coming on penalties against Dinamo Minsk in 2015/16. • Salzburg are currently level with Sturm Graz on three group stage appearances, a joint Austrian record. • Marsch left Salzburg to join RB Leipzig in the summer after two years in the post; he has been succeeded by German-born Matthias Jaissle, who returns to Salzburg after six months in charge of Liefering having been Salzburg's Under-18 coach between 2019 and January 2021. • The Austrian club won an eighth successive Bundesliga title in 2020/21 – their 15th overall – adding the Austrian Cup to complete a hat-trick of domestic doubles and an eighth in total, all in the last ten seasons. • Salzburg's sole previous experience of Danish opposition came with two victories against Esbjerg in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League group stage, Alan scoring twice in a 2-1 success in Denmark and Sadio Mané getting two in a 3-0 win back in Austria. • Salzburg have lost their last three home European matches; the 3-1 win against Maccabi in last season's play-offs is their only victory in their last eight (D2 L5). Brøndby • Brøndby's only previous UEFA Champions League group stage appearance came in 1998/99, when they finished fourth in a section involving eventual winners Manchester United, Bayern München – who went on to lose to United in the final at the Camp Nou – and Barcelona. They lost both games against United (2-6 h, 0-5 a) and Barcelona (0-2 h, 0-2 a) and also went down 2-0 in Munich, having started with a 2-1 home victory against Bayern thanks to Allan Ravn's 89th-minute winner. • The defeat at Parken Stadium by United remains their heaviest home loss in UEFA competition. • Brøndby were Danish champions for the 11th time in 2020/21, their first championship success since 2004/05. • This is Brøndby's first UEFA Champions League campaign since they lost 5-3 on aggregate to Ajax in the 2005/06 third qualifying round – their sixth qualifying loss in the competition and their fourth since that sole group appearance. • That 2005/06 season was also the last campaign in which Brøndby were involved in a European group stage – in the UEFA Cup, a competition in which they reached the semi-finals back in 1990/91, their most successful continental campaign. • Brøndby were not involved in UEFA club competition in 2020/21; their most recent campaign, in 2019/20, ended in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round with a 7-3 aggregate defeat by Portuguese side Braga. • Having lost 4-2 at home and 3-1 away to Braga, Brøndby have been beaten in six of their last eight European 3 FC Salzburg - Brøndby IF Tuesday 17 August 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Stadion Salzburg, Salzburg games, winning the other two. • Brøndby have lost only three of their last 15 home European fixtures (W7 D5) but have been defeated in eight of the last nine away (W1) including all of the last four. • Brøndby have faced Austrian opponents only once before, losing on away goals to Ried in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round (0-2 a, 4-2 h). Links and trivia • Salzburg coach Jaissle worked at Brøndby as assistant coach between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2019. • Brøndby coach Niels Frederiksen was in charge of Esbjerg for those 2013 UEFA Europa League defeats against Salzburg. • Brøndby's Josip Radošević spent 2016/17 with Salzburg, where his team-mates included Alex Walke, Andreas Ulmer and Mërgim Berisha. • Salzburg's squad features two Danish players: right-back Rasmus Kristensen and midfielder Maurits Kjaergaard. • Kristensen was at Midtjylland between 2012 and 2018, making six appearances against Brøndby (W1 D1 L4). • Kjaergaard was a Lyngby player from 2017 and 2019 but has never faced Brøndby at senior level. • Have played together: Maurits Kjærgaard & Jonathan Ægidius (Lyngby 2017–19) Noah Okafor & Blas Riveros (Basel 2018–20) • International team-mates: Brenden Aaronson & Christian Cappis (United States) • Brøndby's Andrija Pavlović played for Austrian side Rapid Wien in 2018/19, featuring in three matches against Salzburg (W1 L2). • While Salzburg have won all of the first four matches in defence of their Austrian Bundesliga title this season, Brøndby are yet to record a victory in their first five Danish Superliga encounters (D3 L2). 4 FC Salzburg - Brøndby IF Tuesday 17 August 2021 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Stadion Salzburg, Salzburg Squad list FC Salzburg Current season All-time UCLQ UCL League UCL UEFA No. Player Nat.
