Previous meetings • This is the sides' first meeting as well as Esbjerg's maiden encounter with Austrian opponents and Salzburg's first exposure to Danish competition. • Austrian sides have the edge in terms of previous UEFA club competition games between Austrian and Danish teams – W8 D4 L7 (W2 D1 L6 in Denmark – W6 D3 L1 in Austria). Match background • Esbjerg beat AS Saint-Étienne home and away in the play-offs to make it to their first UEFA club competition group stage. • Their 2-1 victory at R. Standard de Liège on matchday one means Esbjerg are now on a four-game winning streak in Europe, though they had lost their last three continental home fixtures prior to their 4-3 home victory against St- Étienne in the play-offs. • Salzburg competed in the 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stages, making it through to the round of 32 – but no further – in 2009/10 and 2011/12. • Salzburg have won their last three European games, scoring 11 goals in the process and conceding none. Team facts • Salzburg striker Jonatan Soriano's hat-trick in the 4-0 matchday one win against IF Elfsborg was the 22nd in the UEFA Europa League and, at 35 minutes, the fourth fastest in the competition. Steven Gerrard's 13-minute treble for Liverpool FC against SSC Napoli in November 2010 remains the quickest. • Esbjerg midfielder Mohammed Fellah and Salzburg forward Håvard Nielsen were team-mates at Vålerenga Fotball in Norway from 2009-12. Coach information • Hired as Esbjerg coach in the summer of 2013 after Jess Thorup moved on to helm Denmark's Under-21 side, Niels Frederiksen took an unusual path into top-flight football. An economics graduate, he worked at a bank while coaching youth teams at B.93 København and Lyngby BK, eventually being hired as the club's senior coach in 2009. He led them to promotion in the first of his four seasons in charge. • Salzburg coach Roger Schmidt took charge of the club in June 2012. A midfielder in the lower leagues in his native Germany, he combined football with work as an apprentice toolmaker before studying mechanical engineering. He moved into coaching with Delbrücker SC and SC Preussen Münster, before a fifth-place finish in the 2. Bundesliga with SC Paderborn 07 in 2011/12 helped persuade Salzburg to hire him. 3 Esbjerg fB - FC Salzburg Thursday 3 October 2013 - 21.05CET, (21.05 local time) Match press kit Sport og Event Park Esbjerg, Esbjerg Team facts Esbjerg fB Formed: 1924 Nickname: EfB UEFA club competition honours • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) Domestic title: 5 (1979) Danish Cup: 3 (2013) Ten-year record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA competition 2009/10: did not take part in UEFA competition 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA competition 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA competition 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA competition 2005/06: second qualifying round 2004/05: UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-finals 2003/04: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-0: Esbjerg v FC Santa Coloma 14/08/03, UEFA Cup qualifying round first leg • Biggest away win 0-6: FC Flora v Esbjerg 28/07/05, UEFA Cup first qualifying round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-3: Esbjerg v FC Schalke 04 28/07/04, UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final first leg 0-2: Esbjerg v Dukla Praha 28/09/66, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 7-1: PSV Eindhoven v Esbjerg 09/10/63, European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round second leg 6-0: FC Zbrojovka Brno v Esbjerg 19/09/79, UEFA Cup first round first leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 5-0: Esbjerg v FC Santa Coloma (see above) • Biggest away win 0-6: FC Flora v Esbjerg (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-2: Esbjerg v FC Salzburg 03/10/13, group stage 1-2: Esbjerg v FC Flora 14/07/05, first qualifying round first leg 0-1: Esbjerg v Tromsø IL 11/08/05, second qualifying round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 6-0: FC Zbrojovka Brno v Esbjerg (see above) FC Salzburg 4 Esbjerg fB - FC Salzburg Thursday 3 October 2013 - 21.05CET, (21.05 local time) Match press kit Sport og Event Park Esbjerg, Esbjerg Formed: 1933 UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Cup: (1994) Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 7 (2012) Austrian Cup: 1 (2012) Ten-year record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: UEFA Champions League second qualifying round 2011/12: round of 32 2010/11: group stage (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-off round) 2009/10: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-off round) 2008/09: first round 2007/08: first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2006/07: first round (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2005/06: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2004/05: did not take part in UEFA club competition 2003/04: second round Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 7-0: Salzburg v FC Banants 17/07/08, UEFA Cup first qualifying round first leg • Biggest away win 2-6: FC Nistru Otaci v Salzburg 01/07/00, UEFA Intertoto Cup second round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Salzburg v FC Metalist Kharkiv 16/02/12, UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg 0-4: Salzburg v Parma FC 06/11/03, UEFA Cup second round first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Parma FC v Salzburg 27/11/03, UEFA Cup second round second leg 5-0: Fortuna Düsseldorf v Salzburg 17/09/80, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round first leg UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup • Biggest home win 7-0: Salzburg v FC Banants (see above) • Biggest away win 1-4: SK Liepājas Metalurgs v Salzburg 14/07/11, second qualifying round first leg 1-4: FK Sūduva v Salzburg 14/08/08, second qualifying round first leg 0-3: FK Senica v Salzburg 04/08/11, third qualifying round second leg 0-3: FC Banants v Salzburg 31/07/08, first qualifying round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Salzburg v FC Metalist Kharkiv (see above) 0-4: Salzburg v Parma FC (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Parma FC v Salzburg (see above) 5 Esbjerg fB - FC Salzburg Thursday 3 October 2013 - 21.05CET, (21.05 local time) Match press kit Sport og Event Park Esbjerg, Esbjerg Squad list Esbjerg fB Current season All-time QUAL Tournament League Tournament UEFA No. Player Nat.
