It’s a fine show that you should try to attend. Upcoming conventions include Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas on June 7 – 8, and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship, planned for the weekend of June 13 – 15. It will take place in Oakbrook, Illinois. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there will be a spring edition of Ray Walsh’s Classicon. Currently, William Patrick Maynard and I are writing about the programming that will be featured at PulpFest 2019. We’ll be posting about the panels and presentations through June 10. Please reserve your copy today. Recently, I was contacted about carrying the Armchair Fiction line of books. I’ve contacted the publisher and will certainly be able to stock their books. Founded in 2011, they are dedicated to the restoration of classic genre fiction. Their forté is early science fiction, but they also publish mystery, horror, and westerns. They have a strong line of lost race novels. Their books are illustrated with art from the pulps and such.

    Machen, Lovecraft, and Evolutionary Theory

    i DEADLY LIGHT: MACHEN, LOVECRAFT, AND EVOLUTIONARY THEORY Jessica George A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University March 2014 ii Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between evolutionary theory and the weird tale in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through readings of works by two of the writers most closely associated with the form, Arthur Machen (1863-1947) and H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), it argues that the weird tale engages consciously, even obsessively, with evolutionary theory and with its implications for the nature and status of the “human”. The introduction first explores the designation “weird tale”, arguing that it is perhaps less useful as a genre classification than as a moment in the reception of an idea, one in which the possible necessity of recalibrating our concept of the real is raised. In the aftermath of evolutionary theory, such a moment gave rise to anxieties around the nature and future of the “human” that took their life from its distant past. It goes on to discuss some of the studies which have considered these anxieties in relation to the Victorian novel and the late-nineteenth-century Gothic, and to argue that a similar full-length study of the weird work of Machen and Lovecraft is overdue. The first chapter considers the figure of the pre-human survival in Machen’s tales of lost races and pre-Christian religions, arguing that the figure of the fairy as pre-Celtic survival served as a focal point both for the anxieties surrounding humanity’s animal origins and for an unacknowledged attraction to the primitive Other.

Abstract Through the use of selected works by Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert and H.P. Lovecraft, this thesis explores the question of what it means to be human in the universe when occidental cosmologies no longer align with the universe they seek to describe. Within its view of the universe, H.P. Lovecraft’s philosophy of cosmicism offers the human creature an answer to this question, but in doing so also limits that creature to an isolated life ending in madness or death within an indifferently cold universe. While this thesis seeks to demonstrate the validity of cosmicism as a lens through which to critically interrogate science fiction texts; it more importantly endeavours to address cosmicism’s inherent limitations as a philosophy of the human creature’s place in the universe. This is done by developing neocosmicism as an outgrowth of cosmicism that offers an alternate experience of the universe and a revitalisation of the human creature’s relationship with the universe. By recognising the significant shift in the human creature’s understanding of the universe – from a Cartesian view to a Quantum view within a broader post-modern context – neocosmicism is developed as an interrogative philosophy that provides a framework for opening up a critical space in which to explore alternatives to modernity’s questions rather than offering mere reactions or polarising oppositions.

P. Lovecraft’s late style in delineating the cosmic horror, At the Mountains of Madness poses several questions, the most interesting of which may concern the story’s narrative efficacy in evoking horror that has been presented in the form of science fiction or, to be more precise, in scientific realism. The pivot of this narrative revolves round the novelette’s central sections (7 and 8) where a genealogy of the sentient entities that precede humans’ earthly emergence is recorded. Whether the genealogical enveloping of the cosmic other can summon up the cosmic horror as is textually intended, and what function the enveloping plays against the backdrop of the story as a whole—these will be the main concerns of this paper. It considers the importance of the dark side of the signifier; of all that one does not take into account when one sees a sign as a sign. It might consider the ways in which written words present one with multiple possible significations, the ways in which the fact of a text’s having been written haunts readers’ engagements with that text. Traditional theorists of the materiality of writing might remind us that this materia- lity really does have a signification, that paper and pixels really do convey meaning.

FOREWORD Volume III of the Bulgarian Stud Book of Thoroughbred horses contains the information about the pedigrees and a summary of the breeding activity for the period of 2010- 2013 including. The breeding activity data has been obtained on the basis of the documentation of the stud farms in the country. The reliabilty of the origin of the born foals is confirmed through a DNA test from GeneControl GmbH – Germany. The Bulgarian Stud Book has been compiled in accordance with the requirements of the International Stud Book Committee (ISBC). In compliance with the requirements of the ISBC, the information about the horses has been presented in (?) sections. Each section contains specific information and the necessary data about the horses. The Bulgarian Stud Book starts with the rules and regulations for registering Thoroughbred horses in the Republic of Bulgaria. For all horses registered in the present volume, after their name the suffix of the country in which they are born and identified. The registration of the imported stallions and mares is on the basis of export certificates issued by the country from where they have been imported.
