  • 'Nothing but the Truth': Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US
‘Nothing but the Truth’: Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US Television Crime Drama 2005-2010 Hannah Ellison Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies Submitted January 2014 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. 2 | Page Hannah Ellison Abstract Over the five year period 2005-2010 the crime drama became one of the most produced genres on American prime-time television and also one of the most routinely ignored academically. This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions.

  • Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture
Straddling (In)Visibility: Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture Sasha Cocarla A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Women's Studies Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Sasha Cocarla, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, LGBTQ+ visibility has steadily increased in North American popular culture, allowing for not only more LGBTQ+ characters/figures to surface, but also establishing more diverse and nuanced representations and storylines. Bisexuality, while being part of the increasingly popular phrase of inclusivity (LGBTQ+), however, is one sexuality that not only continues to be overlooked within popular culture but that also continues to be represented in limited ways. In this doctoral thesis I examine how bisexual women are represented within mainstream popular culture, in particular on American television, focusing on two, popular programs (The L Word and the Shot At Love series). These texts have been chosen for popularity and visibility in mainstream media and culture, as well as for how bisexual women are unprecedentedly made central to many of the storylines (The L Word) and the series as a whole (Shot At Love). This analysis provides not only a detailed historical account of bisexual visibility but also discusses bisexuality thematically, highlighting commonalities across bisexual representations as well as shared themes between and with other identities. By examining key examples of bisexuality in popular culture from the first decade of the twenty- first century, my research investigates how representations of bisexuality are often portrayed in conversation with hegemonic understandings of gender and sexuality, specifically highlighting the mainstream "gay rights" movement's narrative of "normality" and "just like you" politics.

  • It Reveals Who I Really Am”: New Metaphors, Symbols, and Motifs in Representations of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Popular Culture
“IT REVEALS WHO I REALLY AM”: NEW METAPHORS, SYMBOLS, AND MOTIFS IN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS IN POPULAR CULTURE By Summer Joy O’Neal A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Angela Hague, Chair Dr. David Lavery Dr. Robert Petersen Copyright © 2013 Summer Joy O’Neal ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There simply is not enough thanks to thank my family, my faithful parents, T. Brian and Pamela O’Neal, and my understanding sisters, Auburn and Taffeta, for their lifelong support; without their love, belief in my strengths, patience with my struggles, and encouragement, I would not be in this position today. I am forever grateful to my wonderful director, Dr. Angela Hague, whose commitment to this project went above and beyond what I deserved to expect. To the rest of my committee, Dr. David Lavery and Dr. Robert Petersen, for their seasoned advice and willingness to participate, I am also indebted. Beyond these, I would like to recognize some “unofficial” members of my committee, including Dr. Elyce Helford, Dr. Alicia Broderick, Ari Ne’eman, Chris Foss, and Melanie Yergau, who graciously offered me necessary guidance and insightful advice for this project, particularly in the field of Disability Studies. Yet most of all, Ephesians 3.20-21. iii ABSTRACT Autism has been sensationalized by the media because of the disorder’s purported prevalence: Diagnoses of this condition that was traditionally considered to be quite rare have radically increased in recent years, and an analogous fascination with autism has emerged in the field of popular culture.

  • Bones Catching the Gravedigger Episode
Bones catching the gravedigger episode Continue Serial killer state prosecutor (former) William Burton (1998, annulled) Heather Tuffett aka Gravedigger was a serial killer who buried people alive and held them for ransom. Background information (edited by the source of editing) Not much is revealed about Taffet's life before becoming a gravedigger, but it was revealed in The Hero in the Hold that she, in 1998, was married to a man named William Burton exactly one month before the annulment of her marriage. She used this short marriage to create an untraceable fake identity that she used to rent a vault where she kept her kidnap equipment. In his first appearance in Aliens in a Spaceship, the Gravedigger (who at the time was considered a man) committed six kidnappings. The victims of four of them were released when the ransom was paid, the family of one victim, Terrence Gilroy, had not paid and the body was never found (although the gravedigger strangled him almost to death before burying him), and the sixth case, Ryan and Matthew Kent, failed for her and the boys' family; The gravedigger intended to kidnap one of them, but eventually kidnapped both. When they were inside a container that held enough oxygen for 24 hours, they used it twice as fast and they died; despite the fact that one of them killed himself to give the other more time. Kidnapping and ransom expert Thomas Vega believes that the FBI's policy of not paying ransoms is outdated and dangerous and, in cooperation with a journalist, writes The Gravedigger's Disclosure.

  • Feminist Argumentative Modes and Expectations in Detective Fiction
RHETORICAL INQUIRY: FEMINIST ARGUMENTATIVE MODES AND EXPECTATIONS IN DETECTIVE FICTION Eden M. Leone A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2015 Committee: Kristine L. Blair, Advisor Catherine Cassara Graduate Faculty Representative Lee Nickoson Sue Carter Wood ii ABSTRACT Kristine L. Blair, Advisor This dissertation reports my study of knowledge making practices used by characters in two forms of popular detective entertainment media: The popular FOX television series Bones, featuring a team of forensic scientists and FBI agents who solve crimes together, and Agatha Christie’s popular detective novel 4:50 from Paddington, featuring the elderly Ms. Jane Marple, who works with her friends and the police to solve a murder. Using the three “ways of knowing” described in Belenky et al’s Women’s Ways of Knowing as heuristic analytical lenses, I perform content analyses on six episodes of the Bones series and the entire 4:50 from Paddington novel to determine how the main characters in each of these popular media create knowledge on their own and with others to solve crimes. I situate my content analysis findings within recent discussions of feminist theory and pedagogical practice to argue that the process of my study, its emphasis on popular media forms, and my findings can contribute to the broader disciplinary understanding of knowledge making within rhetoric and composition as a field of study. iii DEDICATION For my parents: my dad who believed that anything is possible and my mom who proved it.

  • Digging up Dirt Alexandria Yeager
DIGGING UP DIRT AND REPORTING LIES: The Image of the Journalist in the Television Series Bones By Alexandria Yeager Yeager 1 ABSTRACT Corrupt. Pushy. Apathetic. Concerned only about money and getting the story first, the facts second. These are just a few of the descriptions the audience may give journalists after watching how news reporters are portrayed on the television series Bones. Journalists are often seen as obstacles in the effort to successfully solve crimes, usually reporting on facts that later turn out to be untrue. Many times the media are nameless and faceless, just in the background shouting out questions and flashing their cameras. Sometimes journalists aren’t even present – the characters on the show speak negatively about them. They are usually justified for doing so. For the most part, this negative image of journalists continues throughout the show’s first five seasons. However, a change in season six occurs when a journalist becomes a recurring character. She is war correspondent Hannah Burley (Katheryn Winnick) and the love interest of one of the main characters, FBI Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). As a show centered on the sexual tension of the leads, the series works to make Burley, yet another obstacle coming between the main characters, likeable. Although the show revolves around crime solvers and journalists are not weekly fixtures on the show, the subtle comments, along with the journalists who do appear throughout the series, give viewers a negative image of the press. An added layer is that many of the cases mirror real-life, headline-making stories that the press reported on extensively: from high school pregnancy pacts, to the murder of a young beauty pageant contestant, to a pregnant woman allegedly murdered by her husband.
