BRIEF PROJECT SUMMARY Vedanta Limited, formerly known as Sesa Sterlite Limited (SSL)/ Sesa Goa LTD, a Vedanta Group company is one of the world’s largest global diversified natural resource majors, with operations in zinc-lead-silver, oil & gas, iron ore, copper, aluminium and commercial power. Vedanta Limited (Vedanta) is contemplating to establish a green field 0.5 MTPA hot metal plant (Pig Iron), 3 MTPA of pellet plant. The process for production of hot metal is based on blast furnace, sinter plant and coke oven plant. Vedanta is already having 0.832 MTPA pig iron manufacturing unit at Goa along with 1.0 MTPA sinter plant, 0.6 MTPA heat recovery coke plant & 60 MW waste heat recovery plant. The proposed project area is located at Dimbuli Village, Circle Manoharpur, West Singhbhum District, Jharkhand State. Process Details 1. Hot metal (Pig Iron) Plant: The following has been considered for 0.5 MTPA blast furnace and related facilities: A. 0.5 MTPA Blast Furnace: It is proposed to install a blast furnace of 0.5 MTPA capacity in Manoharpur village Jharkhand. This furnace will be a modern blast furnace equipped with hot blast stoves, bell less top, and pulverized coal injection including O2 enrichment. B. Sinter Plant: The availability of the calibrated iron ore lumps is becoming scarce; hence it is proposed to install sintering machines of adequate capacity along with the blast furnace. The advantages with the use of sinter is that, it improves the productivity of the blast furnace, lowers the coke rate, allows usage of low iron bearing material and low value coke breeze in the production.

Vol. 1, No. 4 16 ELEPHANT CONTRIBUTED ARTICLES/REPORTS THE STATUS OF THE ASIAN ELEPHANT IN INDIA* by J.C. Daniel I. INTRODUCTION The problems facing the Asian elephant in India are a reflection of the status of environmental conservation in India. As a species able to live in a wide spectrum of vegetational types, the elephant acts as an indicator species of the condition of its biotic environment. A suboptimal habitat is unable to meet the demands made on it by a nerd of elephants. In a suboptimal habitat the presence of elephants will result in further deterioration. Elephants in such habitats are compelled to seek sustenance elsewhere and come into conflict with man. This conflict has decimated their number to the point that they are now included as an endangered species (Appendix I) in the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Unfortunately for the elephant, its optimum habit — the moist and dry deciduous forests — also happens to be the best suited for sylvaculture (forestry).

Pre-Feasibility Report For The Proposed 5.00 MTPA Iron Ore Mine at Manoharpur Taluk, West Singhbhum District, Jharkand State 1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 Background Vedanta Limited is one of the world's leading diversified natural resources companies. The company’s main businesses focus on zinc, lead, silver, aluminum, copper, iron ore, oil & gas and commercial power, while its operations span across India, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Ireland and Australia. Iron ore division of Vedanta Limited was previously known as Sesa Goa Limited. Company has an ambitious expansion plan of present pig iron business to steel manufacturing with strong foothold in Eastern India. A prospecting scheme (including drilling programme) was submitted to IBM and State Government at the time. As the entire PL area falls in Ankua Reserve Forest and Dhobil protected forest area of Saranda Forest Division, application for permission to conduct prospecting operation was submitted to the Saranda Forest Division office. After due processing and examination of this application at different levels by state government it was recommended to the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India in 2007 and 2008 but in this period the permission from the forest department was not granted. In view of the inordinate delay in forest clearance for prospecting work, an application for renewal of license for 2 more years was made to the State government and prospecting license was extended upto 9th March 2010. On the 22nd April 2009, a revised scheme of prospecting, under rule 5 (2) of MCDR 1988, was submitted to carry out prospecting through non evasive method like geophysical survey, topographical and geological mapping, geochemical sampling etc.
