Class Information

Language of instruction: English and Mandarin

Class level and Credit system: (You are expected to visit an academic advisor prior to your exchange to determine what courses you have left to complete your program. Academic Advisors cannot tell you how the courses from exchange will transfer but you can use the information about your degree requirements to guide your decisions. After being accepted for an exchange, you will work with the exchange coordinator to determine your course availability.) All exchange students are required to submit your Curriculum Choice and Enrollment Sheet which you will receive on orientation day. Students who study in Business department are strongly suggested to attend every class in the first week. Student Information

Information about health insurance: Please prepare your own medical/health plan in your country. Shih Chien Unviersity is not obligated to cover your health cost in Taiwan.

Visa Information: All exchange students coming to Taiwan are required to have a proper visa to study in Shih Chien Unviersity. A “Resident Visa” is highly recommended; however, if you could not get a Resident Visa in Taipei representative office in your country, a “Visitor Visa” will be also eligible. People who enter Taiwan with a Resident Visa are required to apply for “Alien Resident Certificate” (ARC) and Re-Entry Permit at local service centers of the National Immigration Agency within 15 days after arriving Taiwan.

Student Services / Activities available: Shih Chien University provides swimming pool, gym, basketball court and golf practice area for student. It has over 100 student organizations covering a wider range of disciplines and interests such as ballroom dancing, culinary arts, baseball, martial arts, photography, and literature and community services. City Information Taipei City is the capital of Taiwan, Situated at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei is located on the Tamsui River and lies in the Taipei Basin. The city proper is home to an estimated 2,618,772 people. Taipei is the political, economic, and cultural center of Taiwan, Considered to be a global city; Taipei is part of a major industrial area. Railways, high speed rail, highways, airports, and bus lines connect Taipei with all parts of the island.

Banking: Usual banking hours are Monday to Friday 9:00am-3:30pm. Major banks Bank of Taiwan, ESUN Bank, Sunny Bank, Citibank has offices in Taipei. Most banks in Taiwan offer online banking, however, not all offer English interfaces.

Currency: The New Taiwan dollar (NT$) is the official currecy of Taiwan. Coins have values in $1, $5, $10, $20 and $50. Notes have values of $100, $200, $500, $1000 and $2000.

Cultural Facts: Taiwan uses tow official calendars: the Gregorian calendar and the Minguo calendar/ The latter numbers of years starting from 1911, the year of the founding of Republic of China. The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin; however, the 70% of the population who are ethnic Hoklo speak the dialect of Min Nan Chinese as their mother tougue Taiwan’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Most of the populations adhere to Buddism, often in combination with the philosophies of Confucianism and/or Taoism. The western third of the island is flat and fertile, so the vast majority of Taiwan’s people live there. Baseball is Taiwan’s national sport and it is a popular spectator sport.
