Geoffrey Brown 3 This thesis is dedicated to Agnès Calatayud, an inspirational teacher, who reconnected me to French cinema after a long carence, and who, crucially, first introduced me to the films of Claire Denis. 4 Abstract This thesis argues that the interest which the films of Claire Denis display in the ever-shifting modes of relations between people is illustrated through analysis of how music is used throughout her corpus of feature films. Denis draws on an extremely eclectic palette of musical styles, and the thesis proposes that these varying musical modalities are central to her treatment of relational issues, as are the ways in which she deploys her chosen musical selections.

November 10, 2015 For Immediate Release TINDERSTICKS PRESENT “HEY LUCINDA,” NEW SONG OFF THE WAITING ROOM, OUT JANUARY 22ND ON CITY SLANG LISTEN TO SINGLE AND WATCH ACCOMPANYING SHORT FILM watch - http://bit.ly/1HuHqsy listen - https://sOuNdclOud.cOm/cityslaNg/tiNdersticks-hey-lucinda/ “. at once a continuation, a surprise and a marker of loss and decline . It is a grand torch song, a conversation between a man and a woman — definitely old friends, maybe also lovers — with a conceit as old as pop . ” – NPR Music “Songs We Love” “The beautiful video finds the camera lingering down a row of shops and storefronts, almost like a contemporary Western, as the late afternoon sky allows the neon signs to really come to life.” — Indiewire’s The Playlist Throughout their two-decade career, TiNdersticks have become known as masters of restraint and human emotion, led by the sophistication and rich baritone of Stuart Staples. On January 22nd via City SlaNg, the band will release The Waiting Room, their most elaborate and diverse album to date. It’s also an ambitious collaborative film project where each song on the album will be accompanied by a short film. The idea for this was created in conjunction with the ClermoNt-FerraNd INterNatiONal ShOrt Film Festival and its chief CalmiN Borel. Calmin’s great knowledge of short film coupled with Tindersticks’ very definite sense of aesthetic were a strong foundation for this concept. Specific filmmakers were approached with a different song from the album, resulting in a varied collection of styles and techniques that are a perfect foil to Staples’ intimate relationship with the songs.

TINDERSTICKS (UK) Album: No Treasure But Hope Label: City Slang Release Date: 15.11.19 Web: https://tindersticks.co.uk EPK: irascible.ch/releases/tindersticks/notreasurebuthope Three years since their last album proper, singer Stuart Staples decided Tindersticks’ return called for something special. “I felt we needed to be able to make something meaningful,” he says. No Tindersticks album has lacked meaning, of course, but these mavens of intimate, ex- pansive mood song dig deep and diversify beautifully on No Treasure but Hope. Rich in intui- tive warmth, lush melodies and an inquisitive spirit, it’s an album that casts a fresh light on Tin- dersticks’ core qualities, bathed in the glow of a band intent on rediscovering what they can do. For Staples, one rule proved fruitful: known routes were to be avoided. “The last two albums were gradually built to a point of being finished in our studio from moments of playing and recording to- gether. When we figured out how to present the songs live, different things happened to them. This time, we wanted to reverse that – to do something that was about being committed to a song to- gether in a moment.” The aim to capture the band’s onstage energy sparked a fast recording process. “Five weeks from the first notes recorded to the mastering,” marvels Staples, reflecting on a stretch that included acoustic rehearsals around a piano, six days playing live in a Paris studio and one day in London to record strings/brass. That climate enabled these five most unselfish of players to really listen to one another: witness album opener ‘For the Beauty’, which seems to hover in the spaces between Dan McKinna’s tender piano, Neil Fraser’s milky guitar, Earl Harvin’s brushed drums and Staples’ soulful confessions.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
