El presente trabajo es una sinopsis de la familia Acanthaceae donde cuatro subfamilias (incluyendo Avicennioideae) y 38 géneros son reconocidos. El tratamiento de cada género incluye su distribución geográfica, número de especies, endemismo y carácteres diagnósticos. Un total de ocho nombres (Juruasia Lindau, Lo phostachys Pohl, Teliostachya Nees, Streblacanthus Kuntze, Blechum P. Browne, Habracanthus Nees, Cylindrosolenium Lindau, Hansteinia Oerst.) son subordinados como sinónimos y, tres especies endémicas son adicionadas para el país. This applies even for the most studied families, as Drosophilidae. Despite its position of evidence, most aspects of the biology of these insects are still poorly understood, especially those linked to natural communities. Field studies on drosophilids are highly biased to fruit-breeders species. Flower-breeding drosophilids, however, are worldwide distributed, especially in tropical regions, although being mostly neglected. The present paper shows results of a biodiversity inventory of flower-breeding drosophilids carried out in Brazil, based on samples of 125 plant species, from 47 families. Drosophilids were found in flowers of 56 plant species, of 18 families. The fauna discovered showed to be highly unknown, comprising 28 species, 12 of them (>40%) still undescribed. -

Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll. -

HERBST (Hawaii Biological Survey, Bishop Museum, 1525 Bernice St., Honolulu, HI 96817–2704, USA; email: [email protected]) These previously unpublished Hawaiian plant records report 16 new state (including nat- uralized) records, 25 new island records, and 14 nomenclatural and taxonomic changes that affect the flora of Hawai‘i. The ongoing incorporation of the state Endangered Species Program herbarium developed by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR/DoFaW), into the BISH herbarium has brought to light a number of voucher specimens from the 1970s and 1980s that are first records for the state or for particular islands. These records supplement information published in Wagner et al. (1990, 1999) and in the Records of the Hawaii Biological Survey for 1994 (Evenhuis & Miller, 1995), 1995 (Evenhuis & Miller, 1996), 1996 (Evenhuis & Miller, 1997), 1997 (Evenhuis & Miller, 1998), 1998 (Evenhuis & Eldredge, 1999), and 1999 (Evenhuis & Eldredge, 2000). These plants are known to be anti-bacterial, anti- inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, anti-viral, hepatoprotective, sedative and anti-oxidant. Furthermore, some species have been reported to induce child birth and trigger bronchodilatation. Since this group of plants is associated with a plethora of pharmacological properties, a review of reported medicinally-relevant investigations is warranted. -

Gilman, Terry Delvalle2 Introduction Firespike is an herbaceous perennial growing to about 4- feet-tall with an upright habit which has naturalized in Florida (Fig. 1). The shiny dark green leaves of this plant have entire to undulate margins and reach a length of 7 to 8 inches. Beautiful, terminal or axillary spikes of tubular red flowers appear on Firespike in the fall and winter. These showy flowers attract hummingbirds and several species of butterflies. In some ways the plant remains me of an overgrown, and much nicer Red Salvia.
