The aim of this study was to evaluate the healing effect of the microemulsion containing hydrometanic fraction of the inner bark (HMF) of the plant, as well as its antioxidant, antitumor and cytotoxic potential. -

Agrawal Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (ICAR), Almora, 263601- Uttarakhand, India Present Address:1Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India 2Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal, India Email: [email protected] (Received: 15 Apr 2014; Accepted:28 Apr 2014 ) Abstract Inter-specific hybridization between the two cultivated species of barnyard millet, Echinochloa frumentacea (Indian barnyard millet) and E. esculenta (Japanese barnyard millet) holds enormous potential for their mutual genetic enhancement. Here, we report the success in obtaining inter-specific hybrid between E. esculenta and E. frumentacea involving cultivars PRJ 1 and ER 72 of the two species, respectively. The hybridity of F1 plants was confirmed through rice SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) markers. The hybrid plants of the cross PRJ 1 x ER 72 were vigorous, heavily tillered with high culm branching and were free from grain smut disease but failed to set seed due to sterility. Successful hybridization between the two species opens up vast avenues for introgression of desirable traits and exploitation of genetic variability present in the two species for their mutual genetic improvement, besides a wide array of conventional and genomic researches particularly dissection of traits such as yield and disease resistance. CLENCH CURATOR OF MOLLUSKS, MUSEUM of COMPARATIVE ZOOLOGY INTRODUCTION The following list of titles and scientific names of both plants and mollusks is complete, so far as can be traced, for the work done by Dr. Cooke. He left, however, several manuscripts in various stages of completion, which in time will be published. The type specimens of most of the species, subspecies, and varieties de- scribed by Dr. Cooke are in Bishop Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia; but many type specimens were generously donated to other institutions by Dr. Cooke, for his was an exceedingly broad policy. Any type series in sufficient numbers was divided and such duplicates as could be spared sent on exchange or as outright gifts to other institutions. He believed that this policy not only aided other workers in their reference to authentic material but safeguarded type specimens by housing them in various parts of the world. With few exceptions, the new species described by Dr. Cooke, either alone or jointly with other authors, were based on material from Polynesia and Melanesia, wherein lay his main interest. His knowledge of these areas was profound, and his library contained most of the malacological papers dealing with Polynesia and Melanesia. His collection contained many specimens that had been compared with type material in other institutions. Washington, DC 20402-9328 ISBN O-1 6-042075-X Foreword on-indigenous species (NIS)-----those species found beyond their natural ranges—are part and parcel of the U.S. landscape. Many are highly beneficial. Almost all U.S. crops and domesticated animals, many sport fish and aquiculture species, numerous horticultural plants, and most biologicalN control organisms have origins outside the country. A large number of NIS, however, cause significant economic, environmental, and health damage. These harmful species are the focus of this study. The total number of harmful NIS and their cumulative impacts are creating a growing burden for the country. We cannot completely stop the tide of new harmful introductions. Perfect screening, detection, and control are technically impossible and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Federal and State policies designed to protect us from the worst species are not safeguarding our national interests in important areas. These conclusions have a number of policy implications. First, the Nation has no real national policy on harmful introductions; the current system is piecemeal, lacking adequate rigor and comprehensiveness. Second, many Federal and State statutes, regulations, and programs are not keeping pace with new and spreading non-indigenous pests. -

CHIRONOMINAE 8.1 SUBFAMILY CHIRONOMINAE 8 DIAGNOSIS: Antennae 4-8 segmented, rarely reduced. Labrum with S I simple, palmate or plumose; S II simple, apically fringed or plumose; S III simple; S IV normal or sometimes on pedicel. Labral lamellae usually well developed, but reduced or absent in some taxa. Mentum usually with 8-16 well sclerotized teeth; sometimes central teeth or entire mentum pale or poorly sclerotized; rarely teeth fewer than 8 or modified as seta-like projections. Ventromental plates well developed and usually striate, but striae reduced or vestigial in some taxa; beard absent. Prementum without dense brushes of setae. Body usually with anterior and posterior parapods and procerci well developed; setal fringe not present, but sometimes with bifurcate pectinate setae. Penultimate segment sometimes with 1-2 pairs of ventral tubules; antepenultimate segment sometimes with lateral tubules. Anal tubules usually present, reduced in brackish water and marine taxa. NOTESTES: Usually the most abundant subfamily (in terms of individuals and taxa) found on the Coastal Plain of the Southeast. Found in fresh, brackish and salt water (at least one truly marine genus). Most larvae build silken tubes in or on substrate; some mine in plants, dead wood or sediments; some are free- living; some build transportable cases. Many larvae feed by spinning silk catch-nets, allowing them to fill with detritus, etc., and then ingesting the net; some taxa are grazers; some are predacious. Larvae of several taxa (especially Chironomus) have haemoglobin that gives them a red color and the ability to live in low oxygen conditions. With only one exception (Skutzia), at the generic level the larvae of all described (as adults) southeastern Chironominae are known. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. A faunal survey of the elateroidea of Montana by Catherine Elaine Seibert A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Catherine Elaine Seibert (1993) Abstract: The beetle family Elateridae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of insects that includes many economically important species of cultivated crops. Elaterid larvae, or wireworms, have a history of damaging small grains in Montana. Although chemical seed treatments have controlled wireworm damage since the early 1950's, it is- highly probable that their availability will become limited, if not completely unavailable, in the near future. In that event, information about Montana's elaterid fauna, particularity which species are present and where, will be necessary for renewed research efforts directed at wireworm management. A faunal survey of the superfamily Elateroidea, including the Elateridae and three closely related families, was undertaken to determine the species composition and distribution in Montana. Because elateroid larvae are difficult to collect and identify, the survey concentrated exclusively on adult beetles. This effort involved both the collection of Montana elateroids from the field and extensive borrowing of the same from museum sources. Results from the survey identified one artematopid, 152 elaterid, six throscid, and seven eucnemid species from Montana. County distributions for each species were mapped. In addition, dichotomous keys, and taxonomic and biological information, were compiled for various taxa. Species of potential economic importance were also noted, along with their host plants. Although the knowledge of the superfamily' has been improved significantly, it is not complete. -

INTRODUCTION The family popularly known as 'click-beetles' is designated Elateridae under superfamily Elateroidea in the suborder Polyphaga. The larvae of these primarily nocturnal beetles are known as 'wire wonns', a serious pest of certain crops (Stebbing, 1914). These beetles are found throughout India where extensive vegetative covers are in extant. Some however, have been collected from' sandy beds of hilly, areas (members of the genus Meristhus). The name of the family Elateridae Leach 1815 was based on the tribe Elaterites Leach, 1815. Elaler Linnaeus, 1758 was the type genus of the tribe Elaterites ... Supra specific definition and limit of this family remains confusing and the classification of this group of beetles has been regarded by some chief authors as 'almost hopeless' (Stibick, 1979). However, several schemes of classification have been forwarded by different authors (Laccordaire 1857, Candeze 1891, Fiautiaux 1941, Schwarz 1906, Stibick 1979). Authorities varied in their opinion regarding limit and definition of various categories such as subtribes, tribes and subfamilies and some treat them as subfamilies of equal rank. For a number of reasons, including purposes of reference and classification, this arrangement has not been satisfactory. Several authors Hyslop (1917), Crowson (1961), Gurjeva (1969, 1974) tried to improve the elaterid classification. Stibick (1979) classified Elateridae into 12 subfamilies and 27 tribes, 5 of those tribes are again divided into 20 subtribes; most of the subfamilies of other authors have been ranked as tribe by Stibick (op.
