How and Why this Version Differs from Others We cannot give an accurate summary of Aristotle's conclusions about the way things are unless we have some way to translate his characteristic vocabulary, but if our decision is to follow the prevalent habits of the most authoritative interpreters, those conclusions crumble away into nothing. By way of the usual translations, the central argument of the Metaphysics would be: being qua being is being per se in accordance with the categories, which in turn is primarily substance, but primary substance is form, while form is essence and essence is actuality. You might react to such verbiage in various ways. You might think, I am too ignorant and untrained to understand these things, and need an expert to explain them to me. Or you might think, Aristotle wrote gibberish. But if you have some acquaintance with the classical languages, you might begin to be suspicious that something has gone awry: Aristotle wrote Greek, didn't he? And while this argument doesn't sound much like English, it doesn't sound like Greek either, does it? In fact this argument appears to be written mostly in an odd sort of Latin, dressed up to look like English. Why do we need Latin to translate Greek into English at all? At all the most crucial places, the usual translations of Aristotle abandon English and move toward Latin. They do this because earlier translations did the same. -

RICH COCHRANE HEXIS AND GRACE: THE FORMATION OF SOULS AT PORT ROYAL AND ELSEWHERE INTRODUCTION n the middle of the seventeenth century the Cistercian convent known as Port Royal became simultaneously, and connectedly, a centre of pedagogic innovation and religious I controversy. Its “little schools,” which educated (separately) both girls and boys, are now famous largely for the publication of two textbooks, one on logic and another on grammar, which have been seen by some commentators as early documents of the Enlightenment.1 These were associated exclusively with the education of the boys. The girls’ education, however, also produced an important document: the Rule for Children of Jacqueline Pascal,2 who directed the girls’ school at Port Royal des Champs (the old site that lay outside Paris) during the 1650s. This paper gives an interpretation of this text and the educational practice it records and suggests not only that this practice has deep roots in the Christian tradition but also that it continues to exert a powerful, albeit indirect, influence on our thinking about education today. I begin by discussing in some detail the related notions of hexis and divine grace, which in Augustine come together to create a doctrine that had a profound influence on Jansen and his followers. I then proceed to read Pascal’s Rule in the light of this doctrine. I show that the purpose of the regime she supervised was the preparation of the soul to receive grace, making it an early example of a formative pedagogy as opposed to an “informative” one. In the last decades, the existence of the Soul has been seriously considered by Quantum Physics. It has been frequently described as a body of unknown energy coupled to human body by means of a mutual interaction. The Quantum Physics shows that energy is quantized, i.e., it has discrete values that are defined as energy levels. Thus, along the life of a person, the energy of its soul is characterized by several quantum levels of energy. Here, we show by means of application of specific electromagnetic radiations on the human body, that it is possible to revert the energy of the soul to previous energy levels. This process can have several therapeutic applications. -

The first part works through the argument for the existence of movement in the Physics. This argument includes distinctive innovations in the structure of being, notably the simultaneous unity and manyness of being: while material and form are one thing, they are two in being. This makes it possible for Aristotle to argue that movement is not intrinsically related to what is not: what comes to be does not emerge from non‐being, it comes from something that is in a different sense. The second part turns to the Metaphysics to show that and how the lineage of potency and activity the inquiry into movement. A central problem is that activity or actuality, energeia, does not at first seem to be intrinsically related to a completeness or end, telos. With the unity of different senses of being at stake, Aristotle establishes that it is by showing that activity or actuality is movement most of all, and that movement has and is a complete end. -

Aristotelian phrónêsis, Aristotelian Philosophy of Dialogue, and Action Research reviewed by Ole Fogh Kirkeby 144 Phronesis as the Sense of the Event Ole Fogh Kirkeby In this article, the Greek concept of phronesis is analyzed on the basis of its philosophical roots, and the indispensability of its strong normative content is emphasized. This creates a distance to most of the recent under- standing of phronesis as prudence, and hence as practical wisdom with a pragmatic and strategic content. The strong dilemmas created by the nor- mative background of real phronesis present management and leadership as a choice in every situation. From this foundation, phronesis is inter- preted as primarily the sense of the event, and an alternative concept of the event is developed. The presentation of the event also demands a theory of the relation of mind and matter, and hence of the body in the event. This is achieved under inspiration from Stoic philosophy. With this in mind, the more serious approaches to practical wisdom: phronesis as determinant of meta-concepts of research; phronesis as a liberating organizational strategy of learning; phronesis as a strategy of knowledge management; phronesis as a narrative strategy; and phronesis as the capacity of the leader, are presented and analyzed. -

Luck and Good Fortune in the EudemianEthics Kent Johnson Recentlythere has beensome discussion of Aristotle's treatmentof good for- tune(£\m>x;{a) in the penultimatechapter of the EudemianEthics. I Thereare two claims about this chapterI wish to challenge.One maintainsthat the use of the word tUXll (usuallytranslated as 'luck' or 'chance')in the EE is 'quite different' from Aristotle's theoretical discussion of luck, found in the Physics (Woods 1992,67). The other claim is that good fortune is a subspeciesof luck (Kenny 1992,ch. 5, esp.71 and 75). In challengingthese two views,I hopeto developan accountof Aristotle's true intent in this chapter.In the first part of this article I considerthe notion of luck asit is presentedin the Physicsand then argue that the discussionof luck in the EE accordswith this. In the secondpart I arguethat by the end of his discussionof good fortune in the EE, Aristotle doesnot consider good fortune to be any kind of luck at all. I. Thus, there is 'no incompatibility betweensomething's occurring by chanceand its being caused',since chance is not a cause distinct from the four real causes(Woods 1992, 167). Instead, 'chanceoccurrences have the featurethat they fall underno law that holds uni- versallyor for the most part under the descriptionunder which theyare correctly said to occur by chance,though they will havesome explanation under another description'(166). -

TAYLOR FIRST TRANSLATED FROM Arabic into Latin in the early thirteenth century, the philosophical works of Averroes were initially respected as valuable aids to understanding the true philosophy of Aristotle. William of Auvergne, Bishop of Paris and author of a philosophically astute theological synthesis of Greek and Arabic thought with Christian doctrine, openly expressed his appreciation with praise for Averroes. But by the mid-thirteenth century many of Averroes' teachings were under attack with his conceptions of human nature and separate immaterial intellect the subject of sharply focussed and heated argumentative assaults by Aquinas, Albert and others3 Their arguments were not primarily theological but rather philosophical criticisms which charged that Averroes, Drafts of this paper were presented at a conference sponsored by the International Society for the History of Arabic and Islamic Science and Philosophy at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, March 28, 1996, and at the annual meeting of the Medieval Academy of America in Toronto, Canada, April 19, 1997. A LESSON FROM THE ARCANE WORLD OF THE HEAVENLY SPHERES ACCORDING TO MAIMONIDES by DAVID R. BLUMENTHAL Emory Univeristy, Atlanta, GA 30322 The Teaching and the Text So that the ordinary Jew have an informed view of creation as a step toward true conviction about God, Maimonides devotes chapter three of "Hillscot yesode hattoriih" of the Mifoe Torah to an exposition of medieval astrophysics. The system he expounds has several traits that are strange to modern ears: first, it is geocentric; second, the heavenly bodies do not move by themselves in space but are embedded in transparent spheres which move; third, there is no empty space at all between these spheres; and fourth, Aristotelian physics demanded a system with circular uniform movement about a single fixed center. However, since the actually observed motions of the heavenly bodies do not fit this model, ancient and medieval astrophysicists invented a complicated series of spheres-within-spheres to account for the actual phenomena. This attempt to "save the phenomena," as Simplicius put it, seems very artificial to us, particularly since we now know it to have been a useless undertaking. We reject geocentrism, we accept the idea of space, and we are not bound by the idealist definitions of motion in Aristotelian physics. Maimonides, however, accepted all this and, as we shall see, took an important place in the extended fight over which of the explanations available to him was the correct one. 1 I. Damian Caluori (Trinity University) Rhetoric and Platonism in Fifth-Century Athens There are reasons to believe that relations between Platonism and rhetoric in Athens during the fifth century CE were rather close.Z Both were major pillars of pagan cul- ture, or paideia, and thus essential elements in the defense of paganism against in- creasingly powerful and repressive Christian opponents. It is easy to imagine that, under these circumstances, paganism was closing ranks and that philosophers and orators united in their efforts to save traditional ways and values. Although there is no doubt some truth to this view, a closer look reveals that the relations be- tween philosophy and rhetoric were rather more complicated. In what follows, I will discuss these relations with a view to the Platonist school of Athens. By “the Platon- ist school of Athens” I mean the Platonist school founded by Plutarch of Athens in the late fourth century CE, and reaching a famous end under the leadership of Dam- ascius in 529.X I will first survey the evidence for the attitudes towards rhetoric pre- vailing amongst the most important Athenian Platonists of the time. -
The Generative Dimension, in the Light of Aristotle's Substance
90 THE GENERATIVE DIMENSION, IN THE LIGHT OF ARISTOTLE’S SUBSTANCE (HYPOKEIMENON) THEORY Xiaoyu XU1 and Xinlei LIU1 ABSTRACT: The paper is dedicated to the analysis of Aristotle’s substance theory within the overall Organicist perception of the universe as a living organism. The suggested analytical pathway begins with the generative substance (in Stagirite’s original term – generative hypokeimenon) and leads to the primary causes, prompted by the constant movement of the “thing”. We argue that Aristotle’s analysis of “matter and form” (in his original texts: “ὕλη – hyle” and “μορφή – morphe”)2 leads to the generative function, reaffirming its dynamism and process expression.
