The Kamran Djam Annual Lectures Centre for Iranian Studies, SOAS, University of London The Perils of Persian Princesses: Women and Medieval Persian Literature Lectures by Professor Dick Davis Ohio State University Friday 25 and Monday 28 October 2013 Kamran Djam Annual Lecture Series at SOAS In 2011 SOAS was awarded a gi of £2 million by the Fereydoun Djam Charitable Trust to promote Iranian studies. This generous endowment enables SOAS to build on its long and dis nguished tradi on of study into one of the world’s oldest and richest cultures. As part of this ini a ve, SOAS has introduced new scholarships in Iranian studies as well as an annual lecture series to promote diverse aspects of Iranian studies. The annual lectures are hosted by the Centre for Iranian Studies at SOAS and are named a er Fereydoun’s son, Kamran Djam, who predeceased his parents in 1989. We are delighted to announce the second in this series of lectures which will be given by Professor Dick Davis. Dick Davis is Professor Emeritus of Persian at Ohio State University, where he was chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from 2002 to 2012. He is the recipient of numerous academic and literary awards, and has wri en scholarly works on both English and Persian literature, as well as publishing several volumes of his own poetry. He is probably best known for his transla ons from medieval Persian: these include A ar’s Conference of the Birds (with A ham Darbandi), Borrowed Ware: Medieval Persian Epigrams, Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, Gorgani’s Vis and Ramin, and, most recently, Faces of Love: Hafez and the Poets of Shiraz. -

Nizami’s innovative and creative use of lexical collocations in syntagmatic axis makes his work different from other poets’ works. Due to the fact that recognizing the poet’s style and his way of applying the lexical collocations can elucidate his attitude towards life, the present study aims to assess the reasons underlying lexical collocations and etymology in the Nizami Ganjavi’s Khamseh. To achieve this goal, lexical collocations have been investigated on the basis of lexical relations, references to the Holy Quran and Persian mythology. Considering the criteria which have been used in evaluating the Khamseh’s lexical collocations, the reasons of most lexical collocations in other poets’ works can be perceived; therefore, the research’s findings can be helpful in different researches appraising the Persian collocations. -

International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Development International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research and Development Online ISSN: 2349-4182, Print ISSN: 2349-5979, Impact Factor: RJIF 5.72 www.allsubjectjournal.com Volume 3; Issue 11; November 2016; Page No. 197-203 Comparative literature in Iran: Origin and development Mukhtar Ahmed Centre for Persian and Central Asian Studies/ SL/ JNU, New Delhi, India Abstract This paper seeks to trace the historical tracks of comparative literature in modern Iran. I am following the early footsteps of comparative literature of Iran through the life of Fatemeh Sayyah (1902-1947), who is credited to be the founder of the discipline of Comparative literature in Iran, which started off as discipline with the introduction of a literary program for the first time at Tehran University in 1938. The very first academic comparative work with respect to Persian literature was done by an Indian scholar Umar Bin Mohammad Daudpota almost 11 years before its introduction in Iranian university curriculum, in 1927 at Cambridge University, with the title of ‘The effect of Arabic poetry on Persian poetry’. As a discipline, throughout its journey that comparative literature encountered in Iran as far as its development is concerned has had to overcome obstacles in its way. Many a time the program faced its closures and reopening. The process of literary interaction with French literature, its impact on Iranian literature and the outcome of this process, which I believe is more out of a protest than anything else, though it was leveraged to some extent by Pahlavi dynasty in a bid to protect its claims for monarchy. -

Response to ‘Next steps on Book Pahlavi’ (L2/20-135) Arash Zeini 8th May 2020 Introduction Pournader & Hai (2020) might be right in saying that ‘Book Pahlavi may be the best-known complex script not yet encoded in Unicode’. However, I am inclined to add that Book Pahlavi is certainly one of the least researched and understood scripts of late antiquity. Much work is needed before we can make reliable statements about the palaeography of Book Pahlavi. The issues that have puzzled the Unicode experts are in part genuinely difficult to answer. But in my view, the wrong questions have also been asked at times.1 In this document I will attempt to answer the questions raised by Pournader & Hai (2020) which is a very welcome addition to the proposals as it consolidates the questions that have remained unanswered. Please note that my rendering of Middle Persian words and Pahlavi characters is limited by the possibilities offered by the available fonts, which are not designed to accurately represent the scribal idiosyncrasies. If any representations raise more questions, please contact me for clarifications. Question 1 yh/1: The MP suffix -īh, transliterated <-yh>, is written / in Book Pahlavi. Contrary to Meyers (2014:12), the correct analysis of / is ! + + or $ + -. Some- times the scribes abbreviate or rather simplify this sequence of characters to . This happens most commonly at the end of the line, and not in everymanu- script. It is, for instance, very rare in manuscripts of the Pahlavi Yasna. ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Article history: Alexander is one of the most important and permanent characters in history who has Received: 4 October 2014; affected the world’s literature including the European, Turkish and Iranian ones. Nezami is known as an Iranian famous story writer in Iran who has perfectly developed this literal type. He is one of the Keywords prominent poets raised from Azerbaijan school. Nezami is famous for one of his books Alexander, called Khamseh or Panj Ganj. This book includes Leili and Majnun, Makhzanolasrar, Poem, Khosrow and Shirin, Haft Peykar and Eskandarnameh. Eskandarnameh is one his verses Nezami Ganjavi. describing Alexander and it presents this historical character as a world conqueror and a sage. This book introduces Alexander by characteristics like forgiveness, peace seeker, fairness and, etc. This essay scrutinizes Nezami’s concepts towards Alexander and his characteristics.
