Surrey Park Junior Football Club Hear us ROAR! www.surreyparkjfc.com.au Date 10/05/2015 Opponent Bulleen Templestowe Round No. 5 Venue Templestowe Reserve Match Report After a wet morning, the Templestowe ground for the Colts game looked in surprisingly good condition, and after four losses, the boys were keen for a win. Unfortunately, they fell less than a kick short after a competitive game. We began kicking with the wind, and a free to Hans Anjou gave us the chance for an early forward entry, which led to a rushed behind. With the breeze being quite strong in the sections of the ground that weren’t sheltered, marks were hard to judge, but a Jack Stewart mark sent the ball forward, and a free to Harry Lacchiana gave us our second behind. James Marshall’s snap a few minutes later added another point to our score, while some good smothers kept the ball in our forward line. Hans again kicked it forward, but Templestowe’s loose men were proving a problem. A free kick to Templestowe gave them their first score, albeit a minor. When the kick-out was judged over the line, the pressure was back on Surrey Park, but the Panthers stood tall and cleared the ball. Fierce tackling from both sides meant that the quarter time score line was a mere three points to one in the Colt’s favour. Determined to make up for not kicking a goal with the wind, the boys forced the ball forward and got the first score of the second quarter. Finn’s great dash from defence gave us another great chance, but again, the next kick was a turnover after some strong play from our forwards. Halfway through the second quarter, goals were harder to come by than a soccer game, so it was appropriate that Templestowe scored the first goal from a kick off the ground. Some great play by Paul Collopy enabled him to kick the ball to Harry who, after a strong mark, calmly went back and kicked a goal against the wind. Soon after, Hans was again in the action passing to Jez Burrill for another forward thrust. Half-time and the scores were one goal four behinds apiece. so our failure to score a goal with the wind wasn’t too great a setback. We needed to start again and make the most of the wind in the third quarter. A great tackle from Hans, a snap from Collopy and we were in front, if only by a point. Jez attempted to spoil by punching the ball high, but when he caught the ball a couple of metres away, the umpire correctly paid it as a mark. With James Marshall running into space to take a mark in front of goal, we were hopeful of opening our goal tally at the scoring end. Unfortunately, he allowed for the wind which, for once, didn’t push the ball in the expected direction. A few minutes later, after a clever tap from Jonny Brisbane, Damon Parr sent a hurried kick forward for Harry to pounce on the loose ball to score his second goal. Templestowe, however, were not to be denied and replied almost straight away. While goals were now coming more easily than your average soccer game, Harry decided that soccer was the order of the day and from somewhere near the point post, he managed to kick his third goal with a curl that’d make David Beckham envious. Going in to the last quarter, we had a lead, but would it be enough? Hans, as he’d done all done, was in and under at the ball. With Vetch, Liam Hauser, and Tommy Girvan all attacking the ball strongly in the centre, the ball was forced forward for Harry to take another mark and from the difficult kick into the wind, he managed to extend our lead by a point. Noah Bennett made a strong attempt to mark, but after being crashed into the umpire must have been unsure whether to pay the mark or the free, so he paid neither. Ben Peters stout defence and Paul Collopy’s running bounce from halfback gave us another chance to score. Darcy Griffith was battling valiantly and Templestowe’s attempt to clear the area was met with a perfectly positioned Jez Burrill. Harry Veitch’s strong play sent the ball to Hansy, who marked and sent the ball wide to where two Surrey Players managed to slip. The quarter was in its final minutes and we’d held them goalless; this could be our first win of the year. He goaled and suddenly, Surrey Park was behind. With only a few minutes to play, an injury to a Templestowe player needed the stretcher and the hold-up may not have been good for either side, but when you’re behind, it somehow seems worse. When play resumed, we managed to move to the half forward line, but unfortunately, we couldn’t find a target within scoring distance. In the end, Templestowe ran out winners by four points in a low scoring affair.
