SOCIAL REPORT

In my first year as Social Coordinator, I was pleased with how we faired on the social front. We had a variety of functions with the most popular being the iPod Shuffle Night and Trivia Night.

The Premiership Gala was a huge success and special thanks to Ben Wood and Alan Carter for organising a great and fun night. Was great to see many of the past players faces and hopefully more nights like the Gala will be held in the future to help bridge the gap between past and present players.

Special thanks to the Social Committee and especially Bec Carter and also thanks to Greg Rizio and Michelle Winterton for their work behind the bar.

BAR REPORT

Season 2016-17 was my second year behind the bar, with the responsibility of Bar Manager at Box Hill Cricket Club. Looking back on the season, I felt as though the introduction of the Coterie Club by Ben Wood was a welcome initiative, as it was easy for myself to identify the members and I could see the members were pleased with the discounts on selected bar products. Looking back on the season financially, I felt as though it was similar to last season, however with Andrew Blake overseas at the time of this report being done, the total takings are TBC at the AGM.

The success of the season behind the bar was not just due to my efforts, but to other personnel of the club, including Michelle Winterton and Neville Roulston. Michelle ran the bar on most, if not all Saturday nights, with Neville running the bar on the occasional training night when I wasn’t able to attend. Furthermore, I am very grateful to have these two people assist me during season 2016/17. Looking towards the upcoming season of 17/18, I feel as though it would be good if we had another face to help assist me. It cannot always be Michelle and Neville. Also, I would welcome the return of the coterie club and its rewards. All in all, it was a pleasure to run the bar. Looking on field, it was a positive year for the club, however I would have liked to have seen have new silverware/flags in the clubrooms.

See you all in season 2017/18.

Paris Penny & 2nd XI celebrate a wicket

Paris Penny (25 wickets at 12.3) & Lani Dejong (25 wickets at 14.3) were a formidable spin combination. Paris in only her second season of Coin toss at the Maddie’s Shield game (L to R: Mike Larkin [Channel 10], Nick Riewoldt, Meg Lanning [Box Hill Captain], cricket is a leg-spinner with enormous potential. Emma Inglis [Prahran captain]) Lani works as hard on her game as anyone at the club and has started to reap some hard-earned reward. The First XI needs to find more spin overs in support of Cassie Brock, so opportunities exist for players like Paris & Lani if they can keep improving – the step up to P1 bowling to state and national team players is a huge one but we should never put a cap on what young players may achieve with hard work and importantly a resilient, tough attitude. 13

As a team now full of players with big game and finals experience we found a way to win on a regular basis. Our overall playing depth is superior to most other clubs in the competition but there are two clear areas for improvement. In our losses and in particular in the finals we lost, our batting depth was exposed. We also need to find more overs of quality spin in support of Cassie Brock. At this stage of the year, I will not be continuing on as MILO program coordinator,  The Group consisted of 10 participants, ranging as I feel as though the role should change hands for from years 4-8. someone to take on the responsibility, whether it is  Sessions occurred on Friday nights from 4:30- from the men’s side of the club, or women’s side. I 5:30 at Box Hill City Oval do however intend to take up a new coaching role, whether it is under 16’s or under 18’s. What worked well:  MILO parents were incredibly helpful with James Rizio operating sessions (gear, setting up etc.) MiloIn-2-Cricket Coordinator  The highlight of the presentation day was a success, with the assistance of Robyn, Greg and Mints.  Every participant received their MILO pack at the correct time.  Many of the older kids’ parents approached me to speak about going to play under 10’s and beyond at BHCC, good pathway.  Due to the lower numbers, I was able to provide tips and coaching to each individual more than in James and the Milo group at the end of the season the previous season. Issues:  Numbers dropped from approx. 18-20 in 2015/16 to 10 this season. Factors for this could be the lack of promotion we did to local schools, as well as the change from Saturday Mornings to Friday nights.  Due to the change of day and time, we never had every participant at training, so out of the 10 kids, one week could be 4 then one week could be 8.

MEG LANNING ACADEMY Day 2 On September 29 the girls were again exposed to The Meg Lanning Academy continues togrow, and is some great coaching from two of the Inner East now an integral development program for the Box Regions representative coaches Alex Smith and Nick Hill Cricket Club. It is crucial to increasing the Fletcher. The highlight of the day for the girls was playing, numbers for the future. This year the definitely the fielding session by former Box Hill program included 17 girls: player Nick Fletcher. The passion and enthusiasm he showed in his session was a great finish to the Kristy Arulrajah program and ensured the girls finished the program Alannah Dahlsen on a positive note. More importantly it is hoped they Hailey Ferris finished the program and want to be involved in the Binny Jackson Meg Lanning Academy program in the future. Ellora Kelly I would like to thank the Box Hill Cricket club for Jessica Lalanne their support during the program particularly Alan Ellie McKenzie Carter, Meg Lanning and Penelope Cleghorn. A big Caitlin Morando thanks also goes to the coaches from Fitzroy – Kasey Phillips Doncaster Cricket Club - Peter Dickson, Joe Blyth, Stella Reid Alex Smith and Nick Fletcher. We couldn’t have got Ruth Roberts through the program without everyone volunteering Lucy Roe their time to assist this talented group of aspiring Lara Shannon players. We look forward to the continued growth Haleema Shiraz and development of this academy. In the future I Harriet Smolarek look forward watching these players develop into Airiarn Stewart integral members in the senior club in coming years. Brooke Vickers Phil Lovell Day 1 Meg Lanning Academy Coach 2016/17 On July 7 the program commenced with a batting skills session from the Australian captain and Box Hill’s own Meg Lanning. During the lunch break the girls were given the rare opportunity to have a Q & A session and a photo with Meg. Meg spoke to the girls about her pathway into the game and encouraged them to follow all their dreams and strive to be best player they can be. After lunch the girls were again treated to some exceptional coaching from Fitzroy – Doncaster first eleven captain Peter Dickson. His knowledge on batting and the game ensured the girls finished day 1 with some great learning and walked away with some great new drills to implement into their respective training programs.

LIFE MEMBERS

Life membership was bestowed on three Box Hill members this season.

Penelope Cleghorn

Debuting in 2005, Penelope has now given 12 years of wonderful service. She spent eight years on the club committee, including a year as Vice-President. She is a previous winner of the Don Davis Award and has now played 183 games, including 161 in the Women’s 1st XI.

Across those games, Penelope has played in four T20 Finals for two wins and in all seven of our Premier Firsts Grand Finals, being one of four, three times Premiership players.

But the numbers don’t tell you what an amazing BHCC person Penelope is. Perhaps this is best encapsulated by being a seven time winner of the Karen Britton Award; an award which is voted on by her peers based on the core values of the playing group.

Women’s coach Alan Carter stated in his speech at Presentation Night – “Nobody in my 32 years at this club, cares more or takes more pride in this being her club – some have been Penelope’s equal but none have surpassed. She is one of the players who made my time as coach so special. Much more importantly, Penelope is one of the people who make Box Hill a very special cricket club.”

Peter Shepard

Peter came to Box Hill CC in 2003/04 and played for eight seasons, six as Captain / Coach. In that time he accumulated 110 games with 87 as Captain. Peter as a player was the ultimate all-rounder. He made 1,497 runs with a highest score of 107. He captured 133 wickets at a very respectable average of 18.7. His best figures were 6/67. In this time he won the Club Champion’s Trophy twice

However the statistics do not fully reflect Peter’s impact as cricketer. His best performances were always reserved for the toughest situations. A profound memory of Peter as a cricketer was the last wicket stand he and Sam Blake put on against Williamstown to win back to back flags. Peter also possessed the rare ability to impact on a game through the quality of his fielding. His statistics include an extraordinary 21 involvements.

In Peter’s time as Coach the Men’s First XI played in five finals in his six seasons, only missing out in his very first season. His tenure was a halcyon time with Box Hill winning back-to-back premierships in 2006/07 and 2007/08. Life member Ken Trollope stated: “It was a wonderful time to be a Club official and provided both Fletch [Michael Fletcher] and I with some serious bragging rights whenever we attended any official VSDCA function or meeting.”

Peter’s success however was no accident. He was measured and self-assured and had a genuine appetite to be a coach. He was meticulous planner and perfectionist who demanded a commitment from everyone in the organisation from the President down.

Planning was his hallmark. His intensity was legendary. The phrase "playing for Shep stations" was coined very early when he used to keep pre-game warm up games going until his side won.

It was what Peter, as a person, brought to the Club however that had the most impact. He has a whole of club approach and celebrates the success of everyone. He worked as well with the youngest players as he did with the elite guys. He instituted expectations and traditions that helped build a great culture.

Peter continues to stay connected to Box Hill and still supports and contributes in myriad ways.

Neville Roulston

Neville ‘Nifty’ Roulston came to Box Hill in 1997/98. He had previously played at down in Orbost then Altona before moving to the eastern suburbs. Neville arrived as a one-time tear-away fast bowler (his description) who had embraced left arm orthodox bowling to prolong his career.

Statistically Nifty played 112 club games over 10 seasons. He accumulated 183 wickets at a meagre 14.3 and took 5 wickets or more in an innings on 10 occasions. However no performance could ever surpass his bowling spell against Mount Waverley’s 3rd XI in the 1998/99 season. Defending a paltry 113 Box Hill contained Mount Waverley to a score of 109 in 88.3 overs. Nifty bowled 27.3 overs, an astounding 22 maidens and took 7 for 10. This was achieved with 3 fielders crowded around the bat for much of the spell. Ken Trollope, Life member and fellow team mate in that match, stated “I don’t think Nifty bowled a bad ball in that entire spell”. Staggeringly this is not Neville’s best bowling performance. He returned the figure of 4/24 & 7/9 in a 4th XI match in season 2003/04. His final playing season was 2007/08

But Nifty has contributed to the BHCC in many ways other than as a player. For a number of seasons he was the curator at Springfield Park. It was in this time Neville inherited his alternative nickname of “Sprinkles”. You would think, as a spinner you might lean towards a wicket preparation philosophy that involved less water and created a dry and crumbly “spinners paradise”. Not Neville. He had a penchant for giving the playing strip a last loving “sprinkle” on Friday nights. His wickets were often a little green and a little soft and definitely seam friendly. Maybe those days as the tear away quick were influencing his strategy.

For the past decade Neville has continued to contribute as the 1st and 2nd XI scorer, a role the club and players appreciate enormously. Sporting clubs need volunteers like Nifty and we are lucky that Box Hill is his club.
