CANADA BAY SPORTS QUARTER Newsletter Edition 16 December 2014 Message from the Mayor The cricket community has suffered a huge loss in recent weeks with the passing of Phil Hughes, a tragic accident that has seen the sporting world united in their tributes and condolences. I know our own cricket community has been deeply shocked by this but I am sure all sporting codes and groups will be very supportive as bats and balls are once again picked up and a well-loved sport played. Midway through the summer season and the reports around the clubs are that teams are doing well and progressing through their respective competitions. I hope this continues for all our sporting clubs though the end of the season and look forward to hearing of all the success. Recent challenges have unfortunately played a factor in the scheduled cricket events that were to take place at Drummoyne Oval this summer but the Sydney Sixers are still locked in for Sunday, 14 December which will be a great T20 warm up game against an SCG XI. It’s a free event for the community so it’s a good opportunity to bring the family along to one of our best sporting venues. Good luck to all those involved in the competitions and varied sports participated in, your involvement leads to an ever more dynamic and vibrant community that can be enjoyed by all. FIVE DOCK RSL Junior Rugby League Football Club Five Dock RSL Junior Rugby League Football Club for 2014 fielded Mini and Mod league teams from U6 to U10s. Five Dock RSL JRLFC and Concord Burwood JRLFC combined in 2014 to field an U13s team and together with the Five Dock U14s and U16s participated in the Sydney Combined Competition (SCC). Wests Junior Rugby Union Club Five Dock RSL JRLFC again fielded a 2nd grade team 2014 was a great season year for Wests Junior Rugby in the SCC for 2014 (1 of only 2 teams from the Balmain Union Club. A referee program is available for players that have played for 2 years and at least 12 years old. The 2014 competition began on 8 September with 995 players and 111 teams, including an inaugural girls’ competition for 3 divisions. This is our sixth year since formation in 2009 when we started with around 500 players. Our grand Finals will be held at Timbrell Park on Friday evening 12 December 2014, a change from the Sunday mornings of previous seasons. We will again be entering teams in the NSW Touch Junior State Cup held at Port Macquarie in February 2015. For the first time we will be fielding 10 teams for all competitions, which are U10, U12, U14, U16 & U18 in both boys and girls divisions. Squads in above have been selected after several trials that were well attended and the quality of players made it difficult to make the final selections. All squads are now in full training for the tournament. If interested in playing Touch football, a non-contact sport, see particulars on our website www.balmaintouch.org.au. It preceded the first men’s T20I by six months. Having won its inaugural T20I the following year, against England at Taunton, Australia won its initial T20I series in 2009 when it defeated New Zealand 2-1. The first ICC women’s T20I World Cup was held in England in 2009, Australia losing to England in a semi-final. The host nation went on to win the tournament. Subsequently the Australians have a perfect record – winning tournaments in the West Indies (2010), Sri Lanka (2012) and Bangladesh (2014). Today’s match is the eleventh T20I to be played between Australia and India. The first encounter between the two countries in Australia was at Sydney in the 2008/09 season and the most recent was in Adelaide three days ago. They have also met five times in India and three at neutral venues, two of which were during women’s T20 World Cups. Summary results are shown below.     President’s Annual Report for 2019/20 As President of the ACT Branch of Lord’s Taverners Australia, I am pleased to present my report for 2019/20. Support for the Young and Disadvantaged We were pleased in this financial year to be able to disburse $38,107 to deserving causes which support our aim of giving the young and disadvantaged a sporting chance. As in past years, this included “Spirit of Cricket” awards for Cricket ACT’s competition; Junior Taverners Awards to the value of $1500 each, plus a Kookaburra cricket kit to two promising young cricketers from the region – Clare Levings and Ethan Fitzpatrick; funding for Cricket ACT’s program for the development of cricket for girls; a contribution to the National Cricket Inclusion Championships, which are played among all-ability teams annually; and a contribution to Sunrise Rotary’s Dream Cricket Gala Day, which enables young people with disabilities to play cricket. This year we also provided tickets to enable a group of 70 indigenous children from the Clontarf Foundation to attend an international match at Manuka Oval and funding to enable Variety Every Chance to Play to meet club fees for economically disadvantaged young cricketers. In response to the extraordinary conditions faced last summer, we provided $2500 to help five cricket clubs in drought-stricken rural areas of NSW keep going through the season and $1650 for Cricket ACT’s fundraiser for bushfire-affected clubs. As well, for the 13th successive year, the Lord’s Taverners ACT Disabilities Scholarship scheme provided scholarships and grants to the value of $8500 to 13 young athletes.

    Alex Blackwell Australian Cricketer, Inspiring Leader and Keynote Speaker Alex Blackwell is a change agent and disruptor of Australian sport. A professional cricketer who has played more matches for Australia than any other female cricketer in history, she captained the Australian Women’s Team to World Twenty20 glory in 2010 and reclaimed the Ashes against England in 2011. Drawing on her experience, Alex inspires audiences to reach and sustain success through innovation, adaptability, taking calculated risks and leadership. She talks her decision to pursue cricket over and above a career in medicine, choosing to become a leader, teaching others and learning to do things differently. Alex has captained of one of the most successful sporting teams in Australia, the Lend Lease NSW Breakers. In January 2015 the Breakers won their 10th consecutive Women’s National Cricket League title. She is one of only two players to feature in all 10 consecutive wins and she was captain in the last five. In January 2016 Alex captained the Sydney Thunder to victory in the groundbreaking inaugural Women’s Big Bash League and she will lead the Thunder again in WBBL02. Alex has successfully combined elite sport with academic pursuits. She studied medicine at the University of New South Wales from 2002 to 2005 before making a difficult decision to leave the course to pursue her cricketing dreams. Alex changed her career direction to become a genetic counsellor, working for three years in prenatal screening before becoming a full time professional cricketer in October of 2014. Well into her international cricket career, Alex remains at the top of her game.

Selectors have chosen a squad of 22 this season.
