RESOLUTION NO. ___ OF 2018

A RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE DAVID WAYNE TOMS FOR WINNING THE 2018 U.S. SENIOR OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP; FOR HIS REMARKABLE PGA CAREER; FOR HIS PHILANTHROPIC ENDEAVORS, AND TO OTHERWISE PROVIDE WITH RESPECT THERETO

BY: COUNCILMAN OLIVER JENKINS WHEREAS, David Toms was born in Monroe, , he is a graduate of Airline High School in Bossier City and Louisiana State University, and he lives in Shreveport; and

WHEREAS, David Toms, a , won the U.S. Senior Open in 2018; and

WHEREAS, David Toms was a member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour from 1992 to 2017, where he won 13 events, including one major, the 2001 PGA Championship; and

WHEREAS, David Toms was in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for 175 weeks between 2001 and 2006, and ranked as high as fifth in 2002 and 2003; and

WHEREAS, in 2011, the PGA Tour presented David Toms with the Award, as the PGA player who best exemplifies the values of character, charity and sportsmanship. Since 2003, the David Toms Foundation has raised and donated more than $3.7 million to local organizations, to include the Big Oak Ranch, Volunteers of America, Providence House, Holy Angels and support for victims of Hurricane Katrina; and

WHEREAS, in 2013 David Toms created a World Class Golf Academy in Shreveport. The David Toms 265 Academy not only provides a venue and a home to many of the region’s best golfers, but it provides a unique environment where underprivileged and at-risk youth learn important life lessons through the game of golf; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Shreveport in due, legal and regular session convened, that the Shreveport City Council recognizes David Toms for winning the 2018 U.S. Senior Open Golf Championship; for his remarkable PGA Career, and for his philanthropic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council thanks David Toms for being an unofficial goodwill ambassador for the City of Shreveport for many years, and for his efforts to improve the lives of the City of Shreveport.
