REVIEW OF APPLIED ECONOMICS RAE Vol. 8, No. 1, (January-June 2012) THE DETERMINANTS OF ANNUAL EARNINGS FOR PGA PLAYERS UNDER THE NEW PGA’S FEDEX CUP SYSTEM Jonathan K Ohn*, William Bealing** and Dan Waeger*** Abstract: There have been numerous studies that examined the earnings determination of Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football League (NFL) professional athletes, but relatively little attention has been paid to the earnings determination of professional golfers. The important difference between the two is: the earnings of MLB and NFL athletes are determined by past and expected future performance, while the earnings of professional golfers depend strictly on their current performance. In this paper, we reexamine the structure and determination of the PGA golfers’ tour earnings in the new era, which started with the introduction of the FedEx Cup Championship in 2007. We use two determination models – the first with a set of traditional skill variables, and the second with the skill variables along with two additional variables which reflect the monetary and psychological effect of a player’s timely performance at the majors, and the measure of a player’s consistency and persistency throughout the regular season. Overall, the second model appears to be a superior model, explaining the earnings determination of PGA players better. INTENSIVE SURVEY OF BARTON CREEK SEGMENT 1430 May 20-24, 1985 Hydrology, Field Measurements, Water Chemistry and Biology By Stephen R. Twidwell IS 86-01 Texas Water Commission February 1986 ABSTRACT An intensive survey of Barton Creek (Segment 1430) was conducted May 20-24, 1985, by the Texas Department of Water Resources. The study area included the entire length of Barton Creek from its union with Town Lake in Austin to its headwaters in western Hays County. Water quality, hydraulic, and biological data were collected at 20 mainstream stations and two tributary streams. Stream widths of Barton Creek generally increased from upstream to downstream (range 5.2 - 22.9 m). Stream discharge increased from 0.0129 m3/s (0.46 ft3/s) near the headwaters to 0.3894 m3/s (13.75 ft3/s) at Lost Creek Boulevard, and then declined to 0.0372 m3/s (1.32 ft3/s) upstream of Barton Pool as the water flowed over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone and infiltrated to the underground. Stream velocities were slow throughout the study area (range 0.04 - 0.07 m/s). Excepting one early morning measurement, dissolved oxygen levels remained above the 5 mg/L segment criterion. Nutrient and chlorophyll a levels were below or near the lower limits of detection throughout the segment. Stream CBOD5 and CBOD2o levels were low throughout Barton Creek. Chloride, sulfate, total dissolved solids, water temperature, and pH levels conformed to segment criteria. Benthic macroinvertebrate community structure reflected clean water and healthy environmental conditions throughout the -

When You Think of Great Golf Destinations in the United States, San Diego Isn’T on the List, but It Should Be As the City Has It All
or a couple of years I’ve wanted to visit ‘America’s Finest City’ (according to Wikipedia), not because of the genius of Will Ferrell and his character Ron Burgundy in the movie Anchorman. That helped, but the urge came more from a conversation I had with Geoff Ogilvy, who said, “For a combination of golf and lifestyle, something for all the family to do, there’s nowhere like San Diego.” Ogilvy should know, he made it his home, and it’s also the birthplace of Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson. So much about San Diego feels like Sydney. It’s got a great climate, beautiful harbour and beaches plus a world-famous zoo. Tick, tick and tick, and the gum trees were transplanted from the Australian bush. I was there the week after Mickelson won the Open Championship and he was back in town sharing the Claret Jug with family and friends. Despite visiting the Callaway Performance Centre plus two of the golf clubs he plays at, we kept just missing “the Champion Golfer of the Year” by a day or two, but that’s as bad as our luck got, the rest was brilliant. WHEN YOU THINK OF GREAT GOLF DESTINATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES, SAN DIEGO ISN’T ON THE LIST, BUT IT SHOULD BE AS THE CITY HAS IT ALL. THE WEATHER IS NEAR-PERFECT, ITS TOPOGRAPHY IS IDEAL AND THERE’S AN ABUNDANCE OF QUALITY COURSES.
