    ‘Skewed intimacies and subcultural identities: Anne Boleyn and the expression of fealty in a social media forum’ Mickey Mayhew A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Sociology at London South Bank University Supervisors: Doctor Shaminder Takhar (Director of Studies) and Doctor Jenny Owen Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, Department of Social Sciences & Department of Media and Cultural Studies, London South Bank University 1 Abstract The aim of this research project was the investigation of a subculture surrounding the famous Tudor queen Anne Boleyn; what that possible subculture means for those involved, and if it constituted part of a new phenomenon of female orientated online subcultures; cybersubcultures. Through the analysis of film, TV, historical literature and fiction, the research illustrates how subcultures are perpetuated through generations cyclically. The research then documents the transition from the traditional or ‘classic’ subcultural model of the 60s to the 21st century cybersubculture and fandom, suggesting a new way of thinking about subcultures in a post-subcultural age. The research suggests that the positioning of Anne Boleyn as a feminist icon/role model, based mainly on a media-mediated image, has formed a subculture which thrives on disjointed imagery and discourse in order to form a subculture of peculiarly subtle resistance. This new cybersubculture reflects the ways in which women are now able to use social media to form communities and to communicate, sharing concerns over men and marriage, all whilst percolating around the media-mediated image of Anne Boleyn as their starting point. These interactions – and the similarities they shared with the ‘classic’ subcultural style - form the data for this research project.

Indeed, the wedding ceremony as set out in the 1559 Protestant Book of Common Prayer encouraged couples to contemplate and embrace the transience of life in their new roles as husbands and wives, just as all people were called to do every day. This essay considers the use of the prop bed in the 1647 folio text of John Fletcher’s The Woman’s Prize, or The Tamer Tamed (1610),1 and the manner in which the object functions as an emblem of female marital control within the play. Informing this reading is an examination of the seemingly antithetical embrace of marriage and death in early modern culture. It argues that the particular employment of the prop in the first scene of the final act exploits this moment of intersection between these two rites of passage humourously but subversively, and it is the manipulation of these nodes of experience that becomes the means by which the character Livia assumes control of her marital destiny. The space in which she does so, from her supposed sickbed, is highly symbolic, and contributes significantly to the play’s subversive quality.

Wonderland of curse—spiritual culture in Korea Shamanic culture in modern society The Korean Peninsula is a treasure-house of shamanism and mysticism. Without recognizing this, it is impossible to understand spiritual culture in Korea. In the first place, the Chinese character 儒, which is used to indicate Confucianism, is said to mean shaman. Confucius’s mother was from the lineage of shamanic family, and their work was essentially the role of virgins in service of a shrine connecting the real world and the dead. They also acted as a kind of funeral parlor in charge of the entire process of funeral ceremony. It was considered their side benefit to dig up the grave and wear the clothes which the dead wore. So, they were regarded as not very respectable in terms of social status. There are various views as to Confucius’s father. One point is certain that Confucius was born out of wedlock. As were virgins serving at the Greek Pantheon, shamans may have been engaged in prostitutions at times. Now, back to the Korean Peninsula. The second king of Silla (57 BC- 935 AD), Namhae’s title of honor, Chachaung, is said to refer to the dialect indicating virgin of shrine. During the kingdom of Goryeo (918-1392), it was recorded that the shrine of virgins was built by the state and the king protected the shrine.
