Lie moved to New York at 13, where he studied art at the National Academy of Design and the Cooper Union. Very popular in his own time, Jonas Lie exhibited widely, in Philadelphia, Chicago and New York. Lie's style was simultaneously influenced by Impressionism and the realism of the Ashcan school, members of which he had encountered in . Just before his death, Lie held the presidency of the National Academy of Design. With paintings in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée Luxembourg and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston - Jonas Lie is considered the greatest of all Norwegian immigrant painters.
