Hansel & Gretel HOUSTON GRAND OPERA PRESENTS Hansel & Gretel Music by Engelbert Humperdinck Libretto by Adelheid Wette English Version by Sir David Pountney 7:30 p.m. May 28, 2021 Available on demand through June 27, 2021 Hansel & Gretel “ Hansel and Gretel has a musical score that is, without hyperbole, one of the two or three most ravishingly beautiful in the history of music. One never tires of hearing it or performing it; I could happily conduct it every day.” —HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers Background Hansel and Gretel is an opera in the late German Romantic tradition, The Dew Fairy wakes up the children with sprinkles of dew. The gingerbread figures around them turn back into real kids as Peter and Gertrude arrive and embrace their children. They all see that the The Story Witch has been baked into gingerbread in her own oven. Hansel and Gretel, the children of a poor broom-maker, are sent into the forest to pick strawberries by their mother, Gertrude. Their father, Fun Fact Peter, comes home with a feast for the family. • Il Favore Degli Dei (1690): Meta-Opera and Metamorphoses at the Farnese Court
chapter 4 Il favore degli dei (1690): Meta-Opera and Metamorphoses at the Farnese Court Wendy Heller In 1690, Giovanni Maria Crescimbeni (1663–1728) and Gian Vincenzo Gravina (1664–1718), along with several of their literary colleagues, established the Arcadian Academy in Rome. Railing against the excesses of the day, their aim was to restore good taste and classical restraint to poetry, art, and opera. That same year, a mere 460 kilometres away, the Farnese court in Parma offered an entertainment that seemed designed to flout the precepts of these well- intentioned reformers.1 For the marriage of his son Prince Odoardo Farnese (1666–1693) to Dorothea Sofia of Neuberg (1670–1748), Duke Ranuccio II Farnese (1639–1694) spared no expense, capping off the elaborate festivities with what might well be one of the longest operas ever performed: Il favore degli dei, a ‘drama fantastico musicale’ with music by Bernardo Sabadini (d. 1718) and poetry by the prolific Venetian librettist Aurelio Aureli (d. 1718).2 Although Sabadini’s music does not survive, we are left with a host of para- textual materials to tempt the historical imagination. Aureli’s printed libretto, which includes thirteen engravings, provides a vivid sense of a production 1 The object of Crescimbeni’s most virulent condemnation was Giacinto Andrea Cicognini’s Giasone (1649), set by Francesco Cavalli, which Crescimbeni both praised as a most per- fect drama and condemned for bringing about the downfall of the genre. A large body of published research exists regarding the physiology of breathing, the acoustics of singing, and solutions for specific vocal faults. There is similarly a growing body of research into the system of voice classification and repertoire assignment. This paper shall reexamine this research in light of baritenor voices. After establishing the general parameters of healthy vocal technique through appoggio, the various tenor, baritone, and bass Fächer will be studied to establish norms of vocal criteria such as range, timbre, tessitura, and registration for each Fach. The study of these Fächer includes examinations of the historical singers for whom the repertoire was created and how those roles are cast by opera companies in modern times. The specific examination of baritenors follows the same format by examining current and

Bieito’s continued association with the company shows ENO’s commitment to highly theatrical and new interpretations of core repertoire. Following the success of his Carmen at ENO in 2012, described by The Guardian as ‘a cogent, gripping piece of work’, Bieito’s production of Fidelio comes to the London Coliseum after its 2010 premiere in Munich. Working with designer Rebecca Ringst, Bieito presents a vast Escher-like labyrinth set, symbolising the powerfully claustrophobic nature of the opera. Edward Gardner, ENO’s highly acclaimed Music Director, 2013 Olivier Award-nominee and recipient of an OBE for services to music, conducts an outstanding cast led by Stuart Skelton singing Florestan and Emma Bell as Leonore. Since his definitive performance of Peter Grimes at ENO, Skelton is now recognised as one of the finest heldentenors of his generation, appearing at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Opéra National de Paris.

  • There's a Real Buzz and Sense of Purpose About What This Company Is Doing
15 FEBRUARY 7.15PM & 17 FEBRUARY 2PM “There’s a real buzz and sense of purpose about what this company is doing” ~ The Guardian www.niopera.com Grand Opera House, Belfast Welcome to The Grand Opera House for this new production of The Flying Dutchman. This is, by some way, NI Opera’s biggest production to date. Our very first opera (Menotti’s The Medium, coincidentally staged two years ago this month) utilised just five singers and a chamber band, and to go from this to a grand opera demanding 50 singers and a full symphony orchestra in such a short space of time indicates impressive progress. Similarly, our performances of Noye’s Fludde at the Beijing Music Festival in October, and our recent Irish Times Theatre Award nominations for The Turn of the Screw, demonstrate that our focus on bringing high quality, innovative opera to the widest possible audience continues to bear fruit. It feels appropriate for us to be staging our first Wagner opera in the bicentenary of the composer’s birth, but this production marks more than just a historical anniversary. Unsurprisingly, given the cost and complexities involved in performing Wagner, this will be the first fully staged Dutchman to be seen in Northern Ireland for generations. More unexpectedly, perhaps, this is the first ever new production of a Wagner opera by a Northern Irish company. Northern Ireland features heavily in this production. The opera begins and ends with ships and the sea, and it does not take too much imagination to link this back to Belfast’s industrial heritage and the recent Titanic commemorations.
