You bloom for one bereft of hope, Dem der Gram die Seele bricht! Whose soul now breaks with grief! Jener Tage denk’ ich trauernd, Sorrowfully I think of those days, Als ich, Engel, an dir hing, When I, my angel, set my heart on you, Auf das erste Knöspchen lauernd And waiting for the first little bud, Früh zu meinem Garten ging; Went early to my garden; Alle Blüten, alle Früchte Laid all the blossoms, all the fruits Noch zu deinen Füßen trug At your very feet, Und vor deinem Angesichte With hope beating in my heart, Hoffnung in dem Herzen schlug. Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Ein Traum (A Dream) Sechs Lieder op.48 no.6 Text: Friedrich Martin von Bodenstedt Mir träumte einst ein schöner Traum: I once dreamed a beautiful dream: Mich liebte eine blonde Maid; A blonde maiden loved me, Es war am grünen Waldesraum, It was in the green woodland glade, Es war zur warmen Frühlingszeit: It was in the warm springtime: Die Knospe sprang, der Waldbach schwoll, The buds bloomed, the forest stream swelled, Fern aus dem Dorfe scholl Geläut— From the distant village came the sound of bells— Wir waren ganzer Wonne voll, We were so full of bliss, Versunken ganz in Seligkeit. So lost in happiness. Und schöner noch als einst der Traum And more beautiful yet than the dream, Begab es sich in Wirklichkeit— It happened in reality, Es war am grünen Waldesraum, It was in the green woodland glade, Es war zur warmen Frühlingszeit: It was in the warm springtime: Der Waldbach schwoll, die Knospe sprang, The forest stream swelled, the buds bloomed, Geläut erscholl vom Dorfe her— From the village came the sound of bells— Ich hielt dich fest, ich hielt dich lang I held you fast, I held you long, Und lasse dich nun nimmermehr! And now shall never let you go! O frühlingsgrüner Waldesraum! O woodland glade so green with spring! Du lebst in mir durch alle Zeit— You shall live in me for evermore— Dort ward die Wirklichkeit zum Traum, There reality became a dream, Dort ward der Traum zur Wirklichkeit! There dream became reality! Bieito’s continued association with the company shows ENO’s commitment to highly theatrical and new interpretations of core repertoire. Following the success of his Carmen at ENO in 2012, described by The Guardian as ‘a cogent, gripping piece of work’, Bieito’s production of Fidelio comes to the London Coliseum after its 2010 premiere in Munich. Working with designer Rebecca Ringst, Bieito presents a vast Escher-like labyrinth set, symbolising the powerfully claustrophobic nature of the opera. Edward Gardner, ENO’s highly acclaimed Music Director, 2013 Olivier Award-nominee and recipient of an OBE for services to music, conducts an outstanding cast led by Stuart Skelton singing Florestan and Emma Bell as Leonore. Since his definitive performance of Peter Grimes at ENO, Skelton is now recognised as one of the finest heldentenors of his generation, appearing at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and Opéra National de Paris.

Fortunately I am rarely overheard as I endlessly repeat words and phrases, trying to find the music in them: the exact pitches and rhythms needed to portray a particular emotion often take me an exasperatingly long time to find. One of the things that I love most about writing songs is that I feel I truly get to know and understand the poetry I am setting. The music, as I write it, allows me to feel as if I am inhabiting the character in the poem, and I often only discover what the poem really says to me when I reach the final bar. This disc features a number of texts either written especially for me (Kei Miller, Tamsin Collison, Andrew Motion, Stuart Murray), or already in existence (Kate Wakeling, Ian McMillan, 4th century Aristotle).
