Jack Bremer, SPY Team Captain
Name: Jack Bremer High School: Severn School Years on SPY: 13 College attending in Fall 2012: Cornell University Hobbies when not swimming: Green Bay Packers – I’ve been a huge fan my whole life, and now I can finally admit: Jim and Crystee, all those times I scratched Winterfest finals, I didn’t have a “stomach bug” or “so much homework,” I was just watching the Packers game. Other than that, I enjoy anything with boats, cars, Washington Capitals. Also (although my mom despises me doing this) I cannot stop eating pizza or cheez-its; I go through a box of each in about 10-20 minutes. Most memorable swim: Undoubtedly 200 Fly at SC Y-Nationals Finals my sophomore year. My lone goal of the meet was to make my first Summer Juniors cut, and 200 Fly was my last chance. I went a 1:52.94 and placed 16th in the morning, but I needed to go 1:51.99. At finals I won the B Final with a 1:50.34 and out-touched 2nd place by 0.02. I don’t think I’ve ever been more pumped up for anything in my life than that swim at finals, and I still get goose bumps thinking about it. Most memorable/funny moment: After spending nearly my whole life on the team, I’ve accumulated quite a few, so I can’t pick just one moment. I’d mainly like to mention the people on SPY who have impacted my life in memorable ways and have given friendships that will last a lifetime. -
CBH Rivers of Living Water
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles “Rivers of Living Water”: The Movements and Mobility of Holiness-Pentecostals, 1837-1910 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Caroline Anne Bunnell Harris 2016 © Copyright by Caroline Anne Bunnell Harris 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION “Rivers of Living Water”: The Movements and Mobility of Holiness-Pentecostals, 1837-1910 by Caroline Anne Bunnell Harris Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Stephen A. Aron, Chair This dissertation follows the fluid and dynamic movements of holiness and pentecostal worshipers who crossed boundaries of race, gender, language, and region at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century. It demonstrates how the changeable, decentralized, and anti-institutional character of the holiness-pentecostal movement allowed for both radical social behavior and dynamic geographic mobility. The movement was in a constant state of flux as the sanctified traveled across the continent, as holiness ideas circulated amidst an explosion of print culture, and as worshipers moved in and out of socially transgressive practices. By the early twentieth century an expansive network of holiness and pentecostal folk, tied together by railroads and holiness newspapers, sprawled across the United States. The American holiness-pentecostal movement had flowed from the homes of Northern social reformers in the !ii 1840s, to black sharecroppers in the Mississippi Delta and white cotton farmers in East Texas after Reconstruction, and finally to the West at the turn of the century. Popular depictions of Los Angeles on the brink of the Azusa Street Revival describe a seed about to sprout, a woman in labor, or a tree being transplanted. -
Southern Black Gospel Music: Qualitative Look at Quartet Sound
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SOUTHERN BLACK GOSPEL MUSIC: QUALITATIVE LOOK AT QUARTET SOUND DURING THE GOSPEL ‘BOOM’ PERIOD OF 1940-1960 A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY BY BEATRICE IRENE PATE LYNCHBURG, V.A. April 2014 1 Abstract The purpose of this work is to identify features of southern black gospel music, and to highlight what makes the music unique. One goal is to present information about black gospel music and distinguishing the different definitions of gospel through various ages of gospel music. A historical accounting for the gospel music is necessary, to distinguish how the different definitions of gospel are from other forms of gospel music during different ages of gospel. The distinctions are important for understanding gospel music and the ‘Southern’ gospel music distinction. The quartet sound was the most popular form of music during the Golden Age of Gospel, a period in which there was significant growth of public consumption of Black gospel music, which was an explosion of black gospel culture, hence the term ‘gospel boom.’ The gospel boom period was from 1940 to 1960, right after the Great Depression, a period that also included World War II, and right before the Civil Rights Movement became a nationwide movement. This work will evaluate the quartet sound during the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, which will provide a different definition for gospel music during that era. Using five black southern gospel quartets—The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Fairfield Four, The Golden Gate Quartet, The Soul Stirrers, and The Swan Silvertones—to define what southern black gospel music is, its components, and to identify important cultural elements of the music. -

Peoples The Original Stamps Quartet: Palmer Wheeler, Roy Wheeler, Dwight Brock, Odis Echols, and Frank Stamps. Courtesy of Crossroads of Music Archive, Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, Echols Family Collection, A Diverse forms of religious music have always been important to the cultural fabric of the Lone Star State. In both black and white communities, gospel music has been an influential genre in which many musicians received some of their earliest musical training. Likewise, many Texans have played a significant role in shaping the national and international gospel music scenes. Despite the importance of gospel music in Texas, little scholarly attention has been devoted to this popular genre. Through the years, gospel has seen stylistic changes and the 25 development of subgenres. This article focuses on the subgenre of Southern gospel music, also commonly known as quartet music. While it is primarily an Anglo style of music, Southern gospel influences are multicultural. Southern gospel is performed over a wide geographic area, especially in the American South and Southwest, although this study looks specifically at developments in Northwest Texas during the early twentieth century. Organized efforts to promote Southern gospel began in 1910 when James D. Vaughn established a traveling quartet to help sell his songbooks.1 The songbooks were written with shape-notes, part of a religious singing method based on symbols rather than traditional musical notation. In addition to performing, gospel quartets often taught music in peripatetic singing schools using the shape-note method. -

―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer D. M. A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Yvonne Sellers Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Loretta Robinson, Advisor Karen Peeler C. Patrick Woliver Copyright by Crystal Yvonne Sellers 2009 Abstract ―I Sing Because I‘m Free‖: Developing a Systematic Vocal Pedagogy for the Modern Gospel Singer With roots in the early songs and Spirituals of the African American slave, and influenced by American Jazz and Blues, Gospel music holds a significant place in the music history of the United States. Whether as a choral or solo composition, Gospel music is accompanied song, and its rhythms, textures, and vocal styles have become infused into most of today‘s popular music, as well as in much of the music of the evangelical Christian church. For well over a century voice teachers and voice scientists have studied thoroughly the Classical singing voice. The past fifty years have seen an explosion of research aimed at understanding Classical singing vocal function, ways of building efficient and flexible Classical singing voices, and maintaining vocal health care; more recently these studies have been extended to Pop and Musical Theater voices. Surprisingly, to date almost no studies have been done on the voice of the Gospel singer. Despite its growth in popularity, a thorough exploration of the vocal requirements of singing Gospel, developed through years of unique tradition and by hundreds of noted Gospel artists, is virtually non-existent. -

Introduction
Music THE SOUND AND THE UNSOUND Introduction “I don’t care how good of a home a child has been brought up in, and how it’s been taught to do right; if that child hasn’t accepted the experience of the New Birth, rock and roll music catches his attention just as quick as he hears it. Because in him, born in him by nature, is a carnal spirit. And the power of the Devil is so great today that it catches the spirit of that little one.”1 Americans are addicted to music. It is an addiction that last year alone, cost us seven billion dollars2 and helped make music the most prosperous industry on earth. However, we are not without company. The whole world has tuned in with us to become a part of the greatest social phenomena in all of history: Rock’n’roIl music. Rock is now a generation old, and that in itself is nothing short of a miracle for something that was dismissed by the previous generation as being a flash-in-the-pan, in-one-ear-and-out-the-other, teenage craze. Even though we live in an era of blinding changes, rock has been able to assimilate, integrate and even mutate its way through nearly five decades to become something that is much more than music in the ear of the rock- believer. Resurrecting the deep-seated spiritual attributes of its ancient forbearers, rock has now achieved the elevated status of deification. In every sense, it has become a religion, complete with a full contingent of its own high priests and false prophets.
