Debra and Rich Community Managers Mother’s Day Recap The weather wouldn’t cooperate so we brought the garden party inside! Our ladies enjoyed fruit and cheese plates and a choice of entrées. Arch Thompson shared his musical talents with us, playing crowd favorites — such as “Sweet Love,” “The Summer Knows” and “Just the Way You Are” — and charming all of us with his flawless flute performance. Following Arch’s performance, our Activities Coordinator, Leora, gave a short and sweet toast to our ladies. Assistant Manager, John Holley, handed out all the Mother’s Day gifts. Then, our Salon Owner, Michelle, wowed our ladies by raffling off not only one manicure but two manicures — Ella and Ruth Ann can’t wait to get their nails done sometime soon! The ladies enjoyed selections from our dessert trolley, and left with full stomachs and happy hearts.

He attended Howard University, where he studied Political Science and Constitutional Law. He joined the Air Force as a Commissioned Officer and served as a pilot for four years. Determined to further pursue his interest in Political Science, Samuel received a master’s degree in Political Science also from Howard University. He was appointed by the U.S. government as a political employee under the Kennedy and Johnson administration, an appointment that laid the groundwork for his 30 years of service as a career federal employee. He retired to Silver Spring, where he became active in the Kemp Mill Civic Association. Mr. Hoston chose to move to Wilshire Estates, where he enjoys reading, playing poker, and drinking Coca-Cola. Say, “Lucky!” We love this photo of Mr. Hoston posing in his best St. Patrick’s Day attire.

Juneteenth: Its History and Importance by Adjoa A. Aiyetoro Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, Liberation Day or Emancipation Day, refers to June 19, 1865, when Texans were told the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln that became effective January 1, 1863, freed all enslaved Africans in states that had seceded from the Union. It took two and one-half years for the Union Army to get to Texas, the southernmost point of the United States at that time. General Gordan Granger made the announcement in Galveston, Texas, reading General Order No. 3. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed enslaved Africans in states that had seceded from the Union and engaged in rebellion against the United States. On June 19, 1865, there were two Union border states that still enslaved African people — Delaware and Kentucky. It was not until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment on December 18, 1865, that slavery became illegal throughout the United States. Three years later on July 9, 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted and the formerly enslaved and their descendants became citizens of the United States. Juneteenth is celebrated throughout the United States as the day African people won freedom from slavery. The first of what became annual celebrations were organized by freedmen in Texas in 1866, calling June 19 “Jubilee Day.” These celebrations spread throughout the South, becoming more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, frequently centering on food festivals. The focus shifted in the 1970s to civil rights and the arts. Texas made Juneteenth a state holiday on January 1, 1980. In 2020, Governors of Virginia, New York and New Jersey signed executive orders recognizing Juneteenth as a paid leave day for state employees. By 2019, 47 states and the District of Columbia recognized Juneteenth. Legislation has been introduced in Congress to recognize “Juneteenth Independence Day.” Following the filing of bills in Congress in 2020 to make Juneteenth a state holiday, Massachusetts Governor Charles Baker issued a proclamation that the day would be marked as “Juneteenth Independence Day.” Learn more by attending Juneteenth: Its History and Importance on June 19, 2021,1:30-3 p.m. Excursions Recently, we enjoyed a trip to Patapsco Valley State Park where we had a lovely picnic lunch followed by a scenic drive of the Avalon and Orange Grove Areas of the park. On a sunny and beautiful day, residents were excited to see the fishermen and children fishing and playing, respectively, in the Patapsco River. We also recently visited Burnt Mills West Special Park, as part of our tour of the life of , an environmentalist and biologist who lived in Silver Spring. The park serves as an entrance to the Northwest Branch and the Rachel Carson hiking , a section of the Rachel Carson Greenway Trail. When completed, the Rachel Carson Greenway Trail will span 25 miles, stretching from Prince George’s County all the way up to Patuxent River State Park. 13716 New Hampshire Ave Silver Spring, MD 20904
