SATURDAY-MONDAY - JULY 1-3: BLACK FOREST TRAIL-NORTH BACKPACK, TIADAGHTON STATE FOREST, PA—25H ADVANCED REGISTRATION REQUIRED Length: Day 1: 6.5 mi, Day 2: 10 mi, Day 3: 8.5 mi. Hike the northern section of the Black Forest Trail in north central PA on this 3-day backpack. The BFT takes you through valleys and along ridge tops in Tiadaghton State Park. CARPOOL FEE: $25.00 LEADER: Karen Klinedinst, 443-676-1596 or [email protected] SUNDAY - JULY 2 - PVSP OELLA HIKE - 6M This 6 mile Sunday morning hike in Baltimore County provides a brisk morning hike that returns to the starting point around noon. We will hike at a pace of about 2.5 mph, much of the time along the Patapsco River, and encounter a couple of steep but relatively short climbs. We will pause for a short snack break on the trail. LEAVE: 9:15 AM from the trail head at the end of St. Johnsbury Rd. in Oella. From I-695, take Exit 13 and follow Frederick Rd. (Rt. 144) west for about 4 miles. Before crossing the River, turn right on Westchester Ave (before the Trolley Stop). Go 1.1 miles and at the Oella Ave intersection, make a slight jog to the left as you cross and continue on Westchester. In .7 miles, turn left on St. Johnsbury Rd.. MEET: 10.00 A.M. at Zoo. Entrance. From I-83 exit 7 west to Druid Lake Drive and follow signs to Zoo. Some flat sections, a portion that is hilly, a few small stream crossings & a waterfall. MEET: Carney Park & Ride for a PROMPT 9:30am departure. From I-695 exit 31A (if traveling eastbound) to Harford Rd., left at signal; 0 .5m to parking lot on left. If traveling westbound, exit 31B, Harford Rd, 0 .5 m to parking lot on left. WEDNESDAY - JULY 5 - CATOCTIN MOUNTAIN PARK - 11H/S ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Hike 11 miles visiting Cunningham Falls, Hog Rock, Blue Ridge and Thurmont Vista overlooks, Wolf and Chimney Rocks with a total elevation gain of 3000'. CARPOOL COST: $5.00 SATURDAY - JULY 8 - DEVIL'S RACECOURSE TO COWALL SHELTER - 10H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Join us on this out-and-back Frederick County hike that's as scenic as it is challenging. Total ascent is about 2,000 feet; some terrain is extremely rocky; there are a number of stream crossings; and the bulk of the hike is on the Appalachian Trail. CARPOOL COST: $6.00. SUNDAY - JULY 9 - DAVIS TUNNEL AREA (#THREE) - 6M ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Join us on this 6 mile Patapsco Valley State Park hike in Howard County. The hike has a few stream crossings, about 1,000 feet of climbing (including one rugged steep ascent), a little bit of bushwhacking, some rocky terrain, and a variety of river and tributary views. Our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph. There will be a 10 minute snack break but no lunch. LEAVE: 9:00 AM from curbside parking between 10129 and 10115 Green Clover Drive, Ellicott City, 21042. SUNDAY - JULY 9 - SUSQUEHANNA STATE PARK - 8M ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED There’s a little bit of everything in terms of scenery - old grist mill, river views, patches of dense forests, historic white oaks, open fields, and Steppingstone Museum grounds. WEDNESDAY - JULY 12 - GUNPOWDER STATE PARK BELOW PRETTYBOY RESERVOIR - 5M Hike is mostly along the river heading upstream towards Prettyboy dam, then looping back to parking lot. One very steep climb at the beginning, followed by a pretty, but challenging, rocky stretch along the initial section of the river. Rest of the hike is easier. MEET: 10.00 A.M. Take I-83 north to Exit #31 Middletown Rd westbound. After crossing over I-83 take first left onto Falls Rd. Continue on Falls Rd past Bunker Hill Rd. then downhill to cross over the Gunpowder River. Park at the first parking lot on the right, approximately 0.1 mile after the bridge. Moderate hills. Leave 10:00 am from the Hawkins Road parking area. DIRECTIONS: From I-97 southbound take Exit 5, Crownsville, MD 178. From the traffic light at the end of the exit ramp, proceed straight ahead southbound on MD 178 (Generals’ Highway) for 1.1 miles. Turn right at the traffic light, Crownsville Road. Proceed 0.8 miles to a right turn on Hawkins road. Proceed 0.9 miles to parking lot on the right just after Hawkins Road crosses over I-97. WEDNESDAY - JULY 12 - PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK: OELLA TO ILCHESTER - 11H ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Join us on this 11 mile hike from Oella to Ilchester in Baltimore County and return through Howard County. We will pass ruins of home sites and an old cemetery. LEAVE: 8:30 AM from the Oella Parking Lot on Oella Ave just beyond the Trolley Stop Restaurant. Start at Cromwell Valley Park, Willow Grove Farm (2175 Cromwell Bridge Rd) entrance. Hike to Loch Raven Reservoir for lunch and back; minor stream crossings, rolling terrain, a few moderate hills. LEAVE: 9:00am from Willow Grove parking lot. Directions: From Baltimore Beltway (695) take exit 29A, turn left on Cromwell Bridge Rd, to 2 nd park entrance on left (1.3 miles from Loch Raven Blvd. Rain or Shine, last minute non-registered accepted. SUNDAY - JULY 16 - HISTORIC OAKLAND MANOR IN COLUMBIA, MD - 7E This hike which is mostly on paved pathways departs at 9AM from the Oakland Mills Village Center, 5888 Robert Oliver Place in Columbia, MD. From I 95 take Exit 41-MD-175 West for 4.5 miles, turn L at Thunder Hill Road for 0.9m, Turn R at Santiago Road & park in the back of the lot across from the Last Chance Saloon. Rescheduled after a April rain-out. This is a ~9 mile hike on the seldom used but scenic Loch Raven East Dam Trail starting from the popular Loch Raven and Morgan Mill Rd trailhead to the seldom used but scenic East Dam trail on the opposite side of the reservoir from Loch Raven Drive. WEDNESDAY - JULY 19 - HARFORD GLEN ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER - 4/6E Hike Harford Glen through wooded trails along Winters Run. Some hills and stream crossings. MEET: 10.00 A.M. at upper level parking lot. 502 West Wheel Road, Bel Air, MD. Directions: I-95 to Exit 77A Route 24N towards Bel Air. Turn left onto W. Wheel Road. Pass through 1 roundabout.
