SATURDAY- SUNDAY – JUNE 30 - JULY 1 – MASSANUTTEN BACKPACK – 12M ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED 11.7 mile circuit with a spring-fed pond and good camping in the middle. SATURDAY- SUNDAY – JUNE 30 - JULY 1– APPALACHIAN TRAIL ALONG NY/NJ BORDER –26M (BACKPACK) ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Weekend 26 miles stroll along the NY/NJ border from High Point Ranger Station to Wawayanda State Park Office. Day 1 will be 14 downhill miles through farming communities & nature preserves with small 500 ft climbs the first & last mile. Overnight at the Pochuck Shelter. WEDNESDAY – JULY 4 – IRON BRIDGE WINCOPIN LOOP, HOWARD CO. – 5M MW MEET; 10.00 A.M. This leisure hike has some hills and stream crossings. From I-95, take exit 38, Go W. on MD32 for 1.1m to 1st exit. Take Broken Land Pky S for 0.6m. Turn L on Guilford Rd. for 0.9m to road to Patuxent Branch Trail Parking on the right. PARK SOUTH OF LITTLE BENNETT – 8M A nearly 8 mile hike along the trails south of Little Bennett Creek. A few hills, some minor stream crossings. LEAVE at 8:45 from the Howard County Fairgrounds (From exit 80 on I-70, take MD 32 south for about .25 miles. Then go west (right) on MD- 144 for .5 miles. Turn right at Fairgrounds Rd. Approximate elevation gain: 2,000’. Pace averages 2.5 miles per hour. LEAVE: 7:00 A.M. from Howard County Fairgrounds, take I-70 Exit 80 south 0.25 mile on MD-32, west on MD-144 0.5 mile to fairgrounds. Possible stop for dinner on the way back. SATURDAY – JULY 7 – APPALACHIAN TRAIL WORK CREW – 4 TO 6 HR MODERATE WORK ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED Treadway improvements near the Ensign Cowell Shelter. 2nd of 2 trips to this location. Activities involve creating crush & fill, bringing in gravel, grip hoist work to drag rock slabs for a walkway, draining wet areas, moving dirt to cover fill, installing water bars and other dirt & rock moving activity.
