Tyefest Success This year to help raise funds Cllr Dave Neave assisted in organising a Tyefest car boot sale from 10am which proved a great success. Sponsors for Tyefest this year included Dominoes Pizza (), Abbott’s & Sons, Ace Facilities, Hire Station, Tim Jordan’s, Countryman Contractors, Peacehaven Tyre & Auto’s, Maloncho Restaurant and City Cabs who together pledged nearly £4,000 to cover some of the events costs.

Brighton Unsigned organised the bands and loan of the stage from the Brunswick Festival. Unfortunately due to the weather, the last bands were unable to play. The community dance marquee SOAK proved very popular once the rain started! Stalls from the Telscombe Residents Association, Wave Leisure, CTLA, The Flowershed and the Deans Senior Tea Club as well as individual residents selling products and face-painting etc, and a funfair provided entertainment throughout the afternoon. Luckily the rain stopped just in time for the firework finale provided by Telscombe Town Council. Our thanks go to residents, Councillors and Council staff who volunteered to assist in the set-up of the day’s events and on the actual day to ensure that the event ran smoothly.

Page 3 Macmillan Fundraising Telscombe Town Council held several events to raise money for Macmillan recently including a quiz night and coffee

morning. Thanks to the Breast Cancer Support Group for making the teas and coffees at the coffee morning, to those that donated cakes and to everyone who attended the events and gave so generously.

We raised an amazing £560

Well done also to the Southern Stomp line dancers who raised £330 at a coffee ‘afternoon’ which was attended by the Mayor, Cllr Gwen Maskell - see photo right.

Free Prostate Testing One in every two men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. One in every eight men will develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are 2 to 3 times more at risk. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Almost 11,000 men die of this disease annually, one every 48 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at night; bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine. FREE PSA testing is happening in Dorset, Hampshire and , the three counties covered by the charity PCaSO (Prostate Cancer Support Organisation). They believe overwhelmingly in giving men the right to decision making about their own health choices and are continuing with their commitment to a PSA testing programme having tested over 5000 men across our region since 2013. Despite a persistent reluctance by the NHS and other Health Authorities to support free PSA testing for all men in the appropriate age range, PCaSO are offering this service for men aged between 45 and 75 at: Telscombe Civic Centre, 360 South Coast Road on Saturday 19th November 2016. The testing will be conducted by trained personnel and nurses taking blood from a vein in the arm, which will be analysed at a laboratory and the result posted to you within 7 to 10 days. It is essential to BOOK AN APPOINTMENT

When people leave their rubbish in an unauthorised place, whether it be a remote part of the countryside or on another person's land, it is fly-tipping. The waste dumped may be harmful or cause pollution, as well as being an eyesore and harming wildlife. The estimated cost to local authorities in the UK for clearance of fly-tipped waste is over £45 million per year. For these reasons fly-tipping is illegal and offenders can be fined up to £50,000 and face up to five years in prison. Of the 155 fly-tipping incidents in the district over the last 12 months 16 were in Telscombe. No level of fly-tipping is acceptable and a number of hot-spots have been identified. District Council has a dedicated fly-tipping officer who investigates all cases of fly-tipping. The Council has a 100% conviction rate in recent years when it has taken cases to court. The Council also has new powers to issue on the spot fines without needing to take cases to court and is running a district-wide campaign targeting fly-tipping hot- spots as well as encouraging reporting by residents. There are a number of ways to report fly-tipping, including: . Telephone on 01273 471600 Email to [email protected] or via the council’s social media channels. To assist with the investigation, where possible please take note of the following, but do not approach offenders and do not touch or move fly-tipped materials.  The date and time the incident occurred  The model, make, registration number and colour of vehicle used by the offender  A description of the offender(s) A description of fly-tipped materials and their quantity. Every person and business has a duty of care to the waste they create. This means that everyone must take all reasonable measures to ensure that their waste is given to someone who is authorised to remove it. Local authorities and private contractors must hold a current waste carriers licence. If you give your waste to somebody else and it is found fly-tipped, you must be able to provide evidence to the police or the local authority of who you gave it to. If you cannot provide this information, you run the risk of a fine and a criminal record. All companies with a current license can be found on the Waste Carriers Register website:- www.gov.uk/guidance/access-the-public-register-for-environmental-information For more information about fly-tipping visit www.lewes.gov.uk/fly-tipping

Chatsworth Park Tree Survey The Council, in its capacity as owner, is responsible for trees located on land for which it manages or has total control over. As such, it has a common law and statutory duty of care in relation to its trees. Compliance with the duty will require the operation of a reasonable systematic inspection of all its trees, which has been determined in accordance with a sufficient and informed risk assessment. The Council therefore engaged an Arboriculturist to inspect Chatsworth Park who has subsequently produced a comprehensive report. This report will be published on our website. It has highlighted work that needs to be undertaken and we are in the process of obtaining quotations with a view to the work being carried out in the next few months. We would like to reassure residents that we are not undertaking any unnecessary works, but works that are required to ensure the safety of the public and health of the trees.

MP’s News I have been very lucky to have lived and worked in the area for most of my life and can trace my family back for hundreds of years in Sussex. Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven is where I live and I love all of it. I’ve tried very hard over the last 6 years to be a loud voice for the area and to do my very best to represent everyone in this beautiful and diverse place. Whatever the future brings, I will be getting on with the job I was elected to do and will be looking forward to continuing to do my very best for local people in the future. Due to the small electorates of both Brighton Kemptown and Brighton Pavilion, the recent proposal by the Boundary Commission shows a new constituency, Brighton East and Newhaven. The seat would no longer include and & but would include wards in Newhaven and Seaford. These initial proposals are subject to a 12 week consultation process and I would encourage local residents to have their say. Please see www.bce2018.org.uk. This Boundary Review is only the first step in the process. There will be two further consultations in 2017 and the new proposals don’t apply until 2020. If I am selected to stand again, I would be humbled to continue to serve local residents, both existing and new constituents in Brighton East and Newhaven. Newhaven and Seaford are both special places that I know very well.
