A Coruña RESUMEN Como seres mitológicos elementales de la naturaleza, guardianes de los bosques y de todos los seres vivos que habitan en ellos, los duendes forman parte de la raza elemental feérica, y junto con elfos, trols y hadas, son los seres más populares de las mitologías celta y nórdica. Según la mitología celta, el rey de los duendes y elfos responde al nombre de Oberón, mencionado en obras como Macbeth o Sueño de una noche de San Juan de William Shakespeare. Posteriormente, estas leyendas son igualmente mencionadas en el Fausto de Goethe, donde un coro de silfos invocado por Mefistófeles trata de seducir al doctor Fausto, o en cuentos tradicionales infantiles como los escritos por los hermanos Grimm, donde la figura del duende suele asociarse a pequeños seres bonachones. Herederos de esa tradición literaria son muchos de los cuentos contemporáneos del peninsular español. Palabras clave: duende, céltica, península ibérica, literatura comparada. ABSTRACT As a basic mythological element in our nature, guardians of forests and all living things that inhabit them, fairies are part of the elemental fairy race, and along with elves, and trolls, are the most popular creatures in Celtic and Norse mythologies. According to Celtic mythology, the king of fairies and elves is named Oberon, mentioned in works such as Macbeth or Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. A thesis supervised by Dr. Isobel Grundy and submitted at Queen Mary and Westfield College, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph. D. by Philippa Susan Little June 1990. The thesis explores the poetry (and some prose) of Plath, Sexton, Atwood and Rich in terms of the changing constructions of self-image predicated upon the female role between approx. 1950-1980.1 am particularly concerned with the question of how the discourses of femininity and feminism contribute to the scope of the images of the self which are presented. The period was chosen because it involved significant upheaval and change in terms of women's role and gender identity. The four poets' work spans this period of change and appears to some extent generally characteristic of its social, political and cultural contexts in America, Britain and Canada. -

Robbins Date Signature August 8, 2018 Jeremy Glick Date Signature of Second Reader Although Sylvia Plath’s literary career pre-dates the second-wave feminist movement’s acknowledgement and use of poetry as a means to effect political change, Ariel makes a prescient cry for the dismantling of the patriarchy by creating agency and resistance through presentation of grotesquely bloodied and injured female bodies that have historically been on view only as eroticized objects of desire. Plath embeds Ariel with motifs of hospitals, medicine, disfigured anatomy, or the body otherwise in crisis, creating an affective field for the grotesque that makes female trauma a collective – and politically activating – experience. -

That is to say, he spent his time riding from castle to castle, playing on his lute or viol, and singing beautiful songs of his own making. -

Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -
Folk Hinduism in West Bengal
1 Folk Hinduism in West Bengal In the rural areas of India, we see a variety of notions about the nature of gods and goddesses. They are not “high gods,” as we see in the pan-Indian brahmanical forms of Hinduism, but rather regional deities, intimately associated with villages and towns. Indeed, some would not be characterized as gods and goddesses by most people, for those supernatural entities given offerings and worship include ghosts, ancestors, water and plant essences, guardian spirits, and disease con- trollers. We see some overlap of tribal deities, the deities of non-Hindu or semi- Hindu villagers, with the village gods or gramadevatas of village Hinduism. These may be µeld or mountain spirits, or angry ghosts of women who died violent deaths. All of these may be seen in the large area of folk Hinduism. There is no sharp differentiation between the tribal deities, village deities, and gods and god- desses of brahmanical Hinduism. Rather than a polarity, we see a continuum, for these traditions worship many deities in common. Some themes that may be noted in the worship of folk gods and goddesses: Regionalism: These deities are associated with speciµc places, temples, µelds, and streams. The Kali of one village is not the same as the next village’s Kali. One Chandi gives good hunting, another Chandi cures disease. Goddesses are not pan-Indian; they are speciµc to a person’s tribal or caste group, ex- tended family, neighborhood, or village. Pragmatism: These deities are rarely worshiped in a spirit of pure and ab- stract devotion. -

MAPS’s editors updated the site with a more robust content management system. We assisted this transition by creating MAPS pages for a school of poetry and a new poet; adding old and new content to an existing poet's page; assembling a historical timeline; and laying the foundations of a contributor's guide. PRESS RELEASE July 2014 Poetry for the Palace Poets Laureate from Dryden to Duffy The Queen’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse 7 August – 2 November 2014 From William Wordsworth and Alfred, Lord Tennyson to Sir John Betjeman and Ted Hughes, some of Britain's most famous poets have held the position of Poet Laureate. This special honour, and appointment to the Royal Household, is awarded by the Sovereign to a poet whose work is of national significance. An exhibition opening at The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse in August is the first ever to explore this royal tradition and the relationship between poet and monarch over 350 years. Through historic documents from the Royal Library and newly commissioned works of art, Poetry for the Palace: Poets Royal Collection Trust / Laureate from Dryden to Duffy marks the halfway point in the © Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2014. tenure of the current Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. The Artwork by Stephen Raw exhibition includes original manuscripts and rare editions presented to monarchs by Poets Laureate from the 17th century to the present day, many personally inscribed, handwritten or illustrated by the poets themselves. Over three-quarters of the 52 items will go on display for the first time. Born in Scotland, Carol Ann Duffy was appointed the 20th Poet Laureate by The Queen in 2009 and is the first woman to hold the position. Her poems cover a range of subjects, from the Royal Wedding in 2011 (Rings) and the 60th anniversary of The Queen's Coronation (The Crown), to the publication of the Hillsborough Report (Liverpool) and climate change (Atlas). -
