The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

Budha (Mercury) Budha means the intelligent, clever or a wise man in Sanskrit. It is also the name of one of the nine grahas whose movement affects human beings as well as nations and weather conditions that are the subject matter of the divine science known as Vedic Astrology. Hindu mythology (Puranas) tells that Budha (Mercury) is the illegitimate son of Chandra (Moon) out of Tara who was Guru’s (Jupiter) wife. The Puranas tell us that Chandra was enamored of Tara the wife of Guru and seduced her when she was taking a walk in a garden. Tara is then said to have eloped with Chandra. On being asked by Guru to return his wife, Chandra refused to do so. Thereupon Guru sought help of other Gods who waged war against Chandra but Chandra who was helped by Shukra (Venus) defeated them. Then Guru sought help of Lord Shiva who set out to fight Chandra. Lord Brahma, who treats Chandra as his son, knew that this war would end in annihilation of Chandra and therefore went to Chandra and prevailed upon him to return Tara to Guru, thus avoiding war. Chandra relented and returned Tara who started living with Guru. However Tara was pregnant by that time and gave birth to Budha at Guru’s place. On being confronted, she accepted that Budha was son of Chandra. However Budha was so handsome, sharp, capable of grasping thing fast, and intelligent that Guru decided to accept him as his own son and taught him all the shastras (sciences), which Budha absorbed in a short time. -

A specific vantage point in research efforts in the context of the history of disability In this paper our scrutiny regarding the history of disability aims to undertake the reconstruction of patterns perceived in the context of both the acceptance and exclusion of persons with disability. The continuous revisiting of this topic, broken down to research-related questions formulated time and time again, is an essential ingredient of the research effort, due partly to the changing components perceived in the development of society, partly to new findings rooted in the nature of science in development. The primary focus of our paper is related to specific methodological issues in the context of the history of disability. 1.1.1. A social issue to provide the background to our research effort The social issue which necessitates the invocation of the history of disability as a vantage point to be provided – a background, as it were, to the whole concept of | S research – is the oppression of persons with disability in constantly changing forms at various epochs throughout the history of social as well as cultural development. Bhoomi Suktam or Hymn describes the beauty of Mother Earth and imparts lessons regarding the attitude a person must cultivate towards the environment. Hinduism teaches to preserve and protect the environment, not to pollute it. The Shantipath is also connected the Hindu with nature. This paper seek to analyse the Knowledge of Environment in Hinduism. Keywords: Hinduism, environment, earth as a mother Introduction Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) is rightly called a dharma rather than a set of fundamental doctrines, it has a strong tradition of toleration and it embraces diverse thoughts and practices. Sanatana means eternal which is not ‘fixed’ or ‘stagnant’ and ‘conservative’. But today this dynamic nature of Hinduism has become a threat. Many dignified belief and practices of Hindu Dharma lost its way and in lieu of that many ignoble practices cemented its position in the Hindu way of life. -
