1962

Edited by J. E. BECKERLEGGE, A. G. PARSONS and N. R. PHILLIPS, with the kind assistance of Lt.-Col. W. E. ALMOND and Dr. R. H. BLAIR

Isles of Scilly Section edited by Miss H. M. QUICK

The Society's Membership is now 628. During the year, 53 joined the Society, but losses by death, resignation and removal from membership because of non-payment of subscriptions was 82. Two Executive Committee and three General Meetings were held during the year at the Museum, . On February 11th, Mr. A. G. Parsons gave a talk on the identification of the diurnal birds of prey most likely to be met with in Cornwall, illustrated with drawings and film. The Annual General Meeting was held on April 14th, 1962. At this Meeting, Sir Edward Bolitho, Dr. R. H. Blair, Mr. S. A. Martyn, the Rev. J. E. Beckerlegge, Mr. N. R. Phillips and Lt.-Col. W. E. Almond were re-elected as President, Chairman, Treasurer and Joint Secretaries, respectively. Mr. A. G. Parsons was also elected a Joint Secretary. Under Rule 6, Miss Quick, Mrs. Carter, Mr. C. J. Stevens and Miss Whelan retired from the Committee. Dr. Allsop, Dr. Coombes and Mrs. Birtill were elected to the Committee. At this Meeting, Mr. R. M. Bere gave a talk on the Uganda National Parks. The Autumn Meeting was held on October 6th. Four short papers were given by members: "A Bird Watching Holiday in Sardinia," by Dr. R. H. Blair; " The Cirl Bunting's Distribution in Cornwall," by Rev. J. E. Beckerlegge; " How Scilly is Different," by Miss H. M. Quick, and " Some Observations on the Breeding Biology of the Swallow in Cornwall," by Lt.-Col. W. E. Almond. Seven successful Field Days were held during the year. 3 Several rarities occurred during the year. Among those reported were a noteworthy Crossbill invasion, Richard's Pipit, Great Grey Shrike, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Great Reed Warbler, White's Thrush, Bee Eater, breeding Hobbies, American Green-winged Teal, Cory's Shearwater, an increased number of Collared Doves, Wilson's Phalarope, Pectoral Sandpiper, Stone Curlew, Mediterranean Black- headed Gull, Sabine's Gull and Long-tailed Skua. The Society is again indebted to Mr. Wills for auditing the accounts. The Secretaries are willing to give advice to members about binoculars and telescopes. It would be much appreciated if members would please send their subscriptions to the Treasurer, and not to the Secretaries. It has, unfortunately, been found necessary to raise the annual subscription to ten shillings, as from January 1st, 1964. Junior membership remains at 2/6. Records of birds seen on the mainland should be sent, before January 15th, to the Rev. J. E. Beckerlegge, St. Crowan Vicarage, Praze, . Records of birds seen on the Scillies should be sent to Miss H. M. Quick, Priglis, St. Agnes, Isles of Scilly. Records should be sent in according to the Handbook Order—or, if this is impossible, under the heading of species. The mainland recorder is grateful to all who did this in 1962, and begs the few who are still wedded to diary form to change their system in time for the 1963 Report. REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION EFFECTS OF THE COLD WINTER Would members please notify Mr. Beckerlegge of the status of all species in their area, after the cold weather of January and February, and where numbers have decreased, the extent of such decrease. Information concerning all species is desired, but especially of the following:—Linnet, Goldfinch, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Cole Tit, Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Goldcrest, Tree Creeper, Missel Thrush, Song Thrush, Blackbird, Stonechat, Wren and Woodpeckers (all species). It would be appreciated if this information could be sent in as soon as possible, to relieve pressure of work when the annual records are sent in in early January. WOODLARK ENQUIRY An enquiry into the distribution and habitat of the Woodlark in Cornwall is being made by Rev. J. E. Beckerlegge, St. Crowan Vicarage, Praze, Camborne. Would members please send him present-day and recent records of this species. A report on its distribution will eventually be published in the Annual Report of the Society. THE WILLCOCKS MEMORIAL Work on this project is held up until the question of the projected drainage work at the Amble River has been settled. 4 MEMORIAL TO Col. B. H. RYVES PRELIMINARY NOTICE The Executive Committee recommend that the Society's mem orial to its founder should take the form of " The Ryves Memorial Prize." A Committee was appointed—consisting of Rev. J. E. Beckerlegge, Dr. Blair, Dr. Coombs, Mr. Parsons and Dr. Turk—to prepare a detailed scheme and draw up rules. They recommend, subject to confirmation, that the prize be awarded every second year and should consist of books to the value of not less than ten guineas, and that : The prize shall be awarded to the amateur ornithologist submit ting the best paper on any aspect of ornithology, though preference will be given to entries dealing with the breeding biology of birds on the British list, whether of a single species or a comparative study. Alternatively, at its discretion, the Awards Committee may select from time to time a set subject for the prize. The date of the first award, the composition of the Awards Committee and the rules in detail will be published in the next Annual Report. Meanwhile, members and friends are invited to contribute to the Memorial Fund. A form will be found within.—R.H.B.

December 4th. At Ponsandane, , one. Bird seen feeding in a field which largely consists of sueda maritima, divided by very shallow brackish channels of water. It fed in the channels, among the sueda, and in grass. Description : Crown of head, nape, back and tail, brown; tail had white outer feathers. The crown, nape and upper back were streaked with darker feathers forming almost continuous dark parallel lines. Wing feathers with lighter tips. Conspic uous whitish superciliary stripe, and whitish under brown ear coverts. Chin white with moustachial stripe ending in a rather conspicuous brown smudge. The pale buff lower throat, breast and flanks were streaked, the streaking fading out on the breast; lower breast and belly unstreaked greyish white. Legs long, flesh-coloured. Bill orange-yellow. The bird was loosely accompanied everwhere—on the ground and in flight—by a Meadow Pipit, but the Richard's Pipit was the dominant bird, on one occasion chasing off the Meadow Pipit when it approached too closely. The Richard's Pipit was noticeably larger than the Meadow Pipit and considerably longer legged. When on the ground it ran and stopped rather after the Wagtail manner. It was more upright in stance than the Meadow Pipit, and at the end of a run frequently looked up and around. J.E.B. R.G.H. (This record has been accepted by the Rare Birds Com mittee.—Eds.). 79 WATER PIPIT. More recorded than usually. February 14th. At , one. J.E.B. C.J.S. March 27th. At Marazion Marsh, one. R.K. It would appear that there were at least four birds present in the Marazion—Ponsandane area in December. J.E.B. R.G.H. A.C.S. (Full details of all these birds have been received.—Eds.). Cornish Notes 84 BLUE-HEADED WAGTAIL. At Marazion Marsh, on May 21st, one male seen with a female Yellow Wagtail, and one female with a male Yellow Wagtail. On June 6th one female was seen that was apparently mated with a Yellow Wagtail, and on June 28th (presumably) the same female seen with three juvenile " Yellows." J.E.B.

84/88 YELLOW WAGTAIL. A Wagtail apparently of the race cinereocapilla, or possibly a variant thunbergi, at Marazion Marsh, on June 1st. Forehead and crown fairly dark grey. Upper parts brown, underparts cream/white. Pale superciliary stripe. Tail was fairly long and rounded at tip. Legs brown. Bill dark. Voice very harsh with repeated gutteral notes. The bird could be heard from a distance of 300 yards. R.K.

Remained for the rest of the month. E.M.W. 172 WHITE'S THRUSH. January 1st—2nd. At Widemouth, Bude, one in my garden. A golden-brown Thrush thickly speckled with black cresentic markings both on the mantle and underparts. In flight, the striking under-wing pattern of black and white bars seen. On January 2nd a nearby Mistle Thrush was useful for comparison. The White's Thrush was slightly larger and the black and gold plumage was in strong contrast to the greyish- brown of the Mistle Thrush. At close range I could see that the ground-colour of the upper parts was golden yellow, while the buffish-white underparts were tinged with yellow, especially at the sides. The throat was buffish-white. The brown tail feathers, except for the central pairs were tipped with white; outer tail feathers bore larger white spots. Bill, legs and feet were much as Mistle Thrush. F.E.C. 173 FIELDFARE. At the end of the year, curiously few at Crowan. After the first influx of migrants had passed through in late October and early November, one near Crowan Reservoirs on December 28th was the first for several weeks. J.E.B. At St. Breward, none were seen until the end of November, when only small numbers arrived. W.E.A. 175/7 SONG THRUSH, September 25th. At Sennen Cove, one with a very dark grey-brown back. J.E.B. November 1st. A loose party of c. 12 at Crenver Burrows, Crowan, was unusual. J.E.B. December 26th. The cold weather at the end of December brought an influx into Crowan Parish. On this day several noted on the bleak high ground around Black Rock. J.E.B. 178/9 REDWING. December 29th. In the early morning large numbers flying South at Crowan. The snow arrived in the afternoon. In the afternoon every field between Camborne and Praze was full of Redwings. J.E.B. 12 Cornish Notes 182 RING OUSEL. February 28th. 187 GREENLAND WHEATEAR. September 27th. At Trevose Head, fresh remains of a Wheatear found. It had evidently been eaten by a bird of prey. Wing measurement was 104.5 mm. which is within the range of measurements of the Greenland race. In the area were several Wheatears, some of which were probably of this race. W.E.A.

197 WHINCHAT. March 24th. At Lower Porthmeor, Zennor, one, and two on the 25th. R.K. July 22nd. A pair with two juveniles in the Upper Valley. R.J.S. September 7th. At Kynance Road, , one. A.G.P. October 12th. At Lower Porthmeor, Zennor, two. B.P.

198 STONECHAT. The hard weather of the winter of 1961/62 was no doubt responsible for the reduction in the numbers on the Moor in St. Breward Parish, in the summer. This reduction was estimated to have been for a quarter to a third of the number present in the 1961 summer. W.E.A. None found breeding at Crowan in 1962, but birds occurred after the breeding season. In many areas breeding pairs in good numbers, and again bred successfully at Allet which seems to be a new area for the species. G.A. J.E.B.

201 COMMON REDSTART. April 21st. Two males at Housel Bay A.G.P. August 18th. At Penryn, one. R.F.C. September 1st. At Mount Hermon, one. A.G.P. October 5th. At the Island, St. Ives, one. R.K. At each of the three regular nesting sites in the Withiel area breeding was about three weeks later than usual. H.V.B. 220 SWALLOW. Two white Swallows were hatched in St. Tudy in July. I saw them on July 28th, a few days after they had left the nest. One normal-coloured young left the nest with them. The parents were normal-coloured. The two white young were quite white, without any markings. When one preened its breast feathers, however, it could be seen that the bases of these feathers were grey. The eyes appeared dark; bill bright yellow; feet pink; interior of bill normal. The young were seen being fed by the parents on numerous occasions and there appeared to be no discrimination, in the number of feeds, between white and normal-coloured young. Other Swallows in the vicinity did not show any hostility towards the white birds. As far as is known the white young were still alive when the local Swallow population left on autumn migration. W.E.A. The usual large communal roost at Par Beach ceased by September 3rd. CJ.S. During the second week of June, a family party of five Swallows at Perranwell were playing over my garden with a white duck's feather. To the accompaniment of great chatter from the parents, the birds in turn flew about very fast with the feather, gaining a little height before dropping it. As it twisted its way down, it was in turn scooped up by another bird, presumably a youngster on its first flycatching course. One bird muffed it and missed the feather, so with much chattering (? scolding) an adult swooped down and retrieved it from almost ground level before flying up and starting the game or lesson all over again. This interesting sight was seen twice during the summer. P.V. November 6th. About 50 young birds at Mullion. N.B.E. 14 Cornish Notes 223 SAND MARTIN. Breeding noted at a gravel pit at Gunwen, near Helman Tor. W.J.J. 231 BEE EATER. June 12th—13th. At Perranporth Dunes, one. First seen perched on small Sambuseus tree. Seemed tired, allowing close approach to within 10 feet. Flew off quickly towards Holywell. Blackbird size, but with slimmer body. Back brown/yellow changing to yellow towards the rump. Wings and tail green, tail with two projecting feathers. Breast green, underparts green, throat yellow with black trimming. Light forehead. Bill, long, dark and down-curved. Wings had distinct black bar at trailing edge when opened. In flight took long glides. Call " cru-ick." Wings pointed. On the 13th it was put up by a Buzzard quite close to where originally seen, and flew rapidly across the marsh to a small wood. D.F.S. (This record has been accepted by the Rare Birds Com mittee.—Eds.). 232 HOOPOE. March 21st. At St. Ives in a small garden, one. N.R.P. March 24th. ADDENDA AND CORRIGENDA The records of Yellow-breasted Bunting and Red-footed Falcon recorded in the 1961 Report have been rejected by the Rare Birds' Committee, but the Editors think that the records are valid and should stand. The initial B.K. under Red-footed Falcon should read R.K. 39 ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TABLES Arrivals and departures are given in three lists : (a) Passage Migrants (Spring and Autumn). (b) Summer Residents. (c) Winter Visitors. It is indicated when a species properly belongs to more than one list. Passage Migrant describes a species which passes through a given area when moving from its winter quarters to its breeding area and vice versa. Summer Resident describes a species which comes to a given area and spends its breeding season here, in this case, Cornwall. Winter Visitor describes a species which enters a given area, having left its breeding area, and remains there until it returns to its breeding area the following Spring. NOTES: It is important that members bear in mind that a species may belong to more than one of these groups—e.g., A Curlew Sandpiper is a Passage Migrant only, whilst A Dunlin is a Passage Migrant, a Summer Resident and a Winter Visitor. The classification in these iists applies to the various species as they occur in Cornwall and is not necessarily applicable in other parts of the British Isles. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF PASSAGE MIGRANTS Species which, although passage migrants only in Cornwall, breed regularly elsewhere in the British Isles are indicated by the letter (b). The Spring individual, seen twice on May 9th with Linnets, was noted as a small, fork-tailed Finch, with head and fore-body dipped in yellow, white belly and under-tail coverts, streaked flanks and yellow rump. Its call was a muttering " Schmit- mit-mit-mit-tit." The two on October 13th were seen together, feeding on weed seed. Some Linnets were in the same field and the Serins appeared slightly smaller, had forked tails, indistinct double yellowish wing bars, conspicuous yellow rumps (one bird golden yellow, the other paler yellow). Call note was a soft trill " prll-ill-ill-ill." There are no previous records for Scilly.

50 ORTOLAN BUNTING. Single birds on September 6th, 7th, 9th, 14th, 15th and October 18th, three on October 13th, St. Agnes. O. October 13th. The feeding habits of one bird watched : Very fond of the seed of twitch grass. Method was first of all to bend the grass stalk from the base, then running its bill along the stalk and so collecting the seed. This behaviour was repeated very many times. Occasionally, it also broke open the grass stalk to obtain the soft pith, which it readily swallowed. This was seen through a 60X telescope. B,K. 47 Scilly Isles 53 RUSTIC BUNTING. RED-EYED VIREO (VIREO OLIVACEUS) One was present on St. Agnes from October 4th to 10th, and a second bird from the 5th to 19th. With the first bird, the observers' initial impressions were of a fairly bright 48 Scilly Isles greenish bird, about the size of a Great Tit, but with a short tail, showing a darkish cap (actually blue-grey), black and white facial stripes (recalling Firecrest) and whitish under pays. It legs were bluish-grey and the eyes were red in bright sunlight. The second individual, seen in company with the first on October 5th, was duller, with less intense blackish borders to the eye-stripes, less green upper parts, duller white under pays and a duller grey (no blue) crown. The eye appeared blackish in all lights. The call-note of both birds was " tchay," with a pronounced nasal twang, reminiscent of a Willow Tit. O. There is only one previous record of the species in Europe. It is perhaps not irrelevant to note that the liner " Rotterdam " (which traditionally approaches the Islands closer than any other trans-Atlantic vessel) passed St. Agnes on her way from New York shortly before the first Vireo was discovered. BOBOLINK (DOLICHORYX ORYZIVORUS). One, probably an immature male, was discovered by F. H. D. Hicks in the bracken field in the neighbourhood of the Pool on September 19th. M. J. Carter and J. A. Burton were called and a mist net was erected, the bird being trapped within an hour. In the hand, it was seen by several other observers, including M. J. Cowlard, J. Cooke and Miss Quick. Because of the difficulties of identification it was roosted overnight, and after release the next day was not seen again. In the field, the Bobolink had the general appearance of a predominantly Yellow Bunting-like bird, with a striped head pattern which at first suggested it might have been a Yellow-breasted Bunting. But its size alone precluded this possibility, though its identity remained in doubt until M.J.C. was able to examine skins at the British Museum (Natural History) on September 25th. It appeared quite strong and healthy, and showed no signs of fatigue. Full laboratory and field descriptions were taken and will be published elsewhere. The only previous records for Europe are two undated ones from Heligoland. O. 125 RED-BREASTED FLYCATCHER. September 19th and 20th one, and a further seven individuals in October, with three on the 7th and one to three from 9th— 14th, St. Agnes. O. 127 GOLDCREST. October 22nd. Large numbers were passing through St. Agnes, estimated 150. Many of these were feeding on the ground, both on short grass and rough fallow. H.M.Q. 128 FIRECREST. One on April 14th and 15th, two on 17th. In Autumn, daily October 6th—14th (most, eight on 9th) and 21st—29th (five on 22nd), one on November 1st and 4th, three on 3rd, St. Agnes. O. November 24th and 25th, two, St. Agnes. H.M.Q. 49 Scilly Isles 129 CHIFFCHAFF. A party of five on St. Mary's all November and December. P.Z.M. January 8th. A party of three on St. Mary's. R.S. 134 GREENISH WARBLER. From September 15th to 21st. One on St. Agnes (trapped on 19th) with a second, greyer individual also present on 16th. O. These are the first records for Scilly. 137 YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER. Single birds, 6th—9th October and 15th October on St. Agnes. O. R.W.E.W. 147 GREAT REED WARBLER. June 6th. A male found singing amongst the Tamarisk hedges off Barnaby Lane, St. Agnes, was trapped there next day. It was released near the Observatory and was singing again in the Parsonage on the 8th. The raucous, jarring song could be heard from a long way off, but was very ventriloquial and difficult to locate. R. & G.G. O. H.M.Q. 149 REED WARBLER. June 12th. Song heard on Tresco. C.J.S.

150 MARSH WARBLER. October 31st and November 3rd. One was seen in the Parsonage Garden, St. Agnes. O, 155 ICTERINE WARBLER. Single birds on September 14th, 15th, 16th and 30th on St. Agnes. Also, one on Annet on September 18th. 0. 156 MELODIOUS WARBLER. At least five individuals (three trapped) between September 6th and 18th, and one on October 2nd and 3rd. Single Hippolais Warblers were also seen on September 4th and 5th on St. Agnes. 0. 157 OLIVACEOUS WARBLER. September 30th to October 2nd. One on St. Agnes (the second Observatory record). O. (Full details have been submitted for publication in " British Birds "). 50 Scilly Isles 164 LESSER WHITETHROAT. On April 26th three, on 28th two, and one on 30th. Single birds, August 30th and October 6th, on St. Agnes. O. November 6th. One on St. Agnes, based almost entirely on one aphis-infested Tree Mallow. H.M.Q.

5 SONG THRUSH. June 16th. One on the shore, breaking yellow and brown shells (periwinkle?) and devouring contents. R.S. September 21st. A bird spent all of one day perching on and working over my brassica plants, presumably for cater pillars. H.M.Q.

203 NIGHTINGALE. September 2nd, 7th and 12th. Single birds on St. Agnes. O.

205/206 BLUETHROAT. On October 4th, on St. Mary's, I saw a brownish-grey bird flitting from one post to another, rather Robin-like, but with very pronounced eye-stripe and red sides to tail. When I eventually got a breast-on view, the most prominent feature was a speckled black crescent shape on the breast with a few white feathers above it, conspicuous against a background of dirty white or near-buff. There was no blue on the throat. R.S.

220 SWALLOW. On July 8th, a pair of Swallows started to build in the Church, on St. Agnes; not on any of the suitable cross-beams, but on an outstanding peg in the very apex of the roof. After constant fussing and a lot of mess, they gave it up. H.M.Q.

222 HOUSE MARTIN. November 13th. A large mixed flock of these birds and Swallows and Sand Martins seen. P.Z.M.

232 HOOPOE. March 16th and 18th, April 23rd, May 2nd—7th single birds, April 27th two, all on St. Agnes. O. April 2nd. One on St. Mary's. P.Z.M. April 22nd one, May 3rd one, May 4th two, May 7th—9th three, on St. Mary's. R.S. April 24th. One on . S.G.B. September 5th. One on St. Mary's. P.Z.M.

234 KINGFISHER. None seen this Autumn on St. Mary's. P.Z.M. Single birds recorded on nine days in the Autumn on St. Agnes. O. 51 Scilly Isles 235 GREEN WOODPECKER. October 12th and 13th. One on Bryher. P.M. 237 GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER. October 12th and 13th. One on Bryher. P.M. 254 BARN OWL. One roosted in a shed on for two days in February. O. 259 PEREGRINE. March 20th. One seen on St. Agnes. O. 261 HOBBY. May 3rd to 5th. One on St. Agnes. O. 262 MERLIN. One or two from March to May and October—November, also, unusually, a male on June 27th and 28th. One or two between October 1st and November 1st. O. On January 14th and a number of dates in September, October, November and December, a bird over St. Mary's. Once it tried to capture a Lapwing, but gave up the chase after ten minutes aerobatics. R.S. 263 KESTREL. October 18th. I saw a Kestrel hanging on the wind, it looked as if it were scratching its throat. On looking through 10 x 50 binoculars, it was seen that the bird was feeding on the wing, holding a beetle in its claws and breaking it with the bill. R.S. A pair bred at the usual site on St. Agnes in 1961 and 1962. Hatching success was low, only two out of five eggs hatching in 1961 and only one out of five in 1962, but the three young are all thought to have fledged successfully. Seven pellets collected from beneath the nest on May 20th consisted mainly of beetle remains, but also contained individual teeth of a Scilly Shrew and a very young Brown Rat, as well as the feathers and feet of at least two small passerines. Migrant birds were noted in May, September and October. 0. 265 RED-FOOTED FALCON. Between May 27th and June 1st, on St. Agnes, a first- summer male was seen at close range on several occasions. Almost certainly the same bird was seen on St. Mary's on June 3rd. There are no previous records for Scilly. R.G. O. H.M.Q. 271 MARSH HARRIER. August 5th. One over the reed beds at Porthellick, St. Mary's. R,S, 52 Scilly Isles 272 MONTAGU'S HARRIER. April 24th—27th. A female on St. Mary's. O. 277 SPARROW-HAWK. April 23rd and May 8th. Single birds on St. Agnes. O. 290 PURPLE HERON. May 10th—23rd. An adult male at Porthellick, St. Mary's. One could approach the bird easily, but when flushed it settled in reed beds. The bird left on the 23rd and climbed to a great height in ever-growing circles and was lost to view in a S.E. direction. R.S. P.Z.M. 292 LITTLE EGRET. On May 13th a Little Egret arrived on St. Agnes, and stayed until the 28th. It was an adult with fully developed occipital crest and long scapulars. At first, it was always to be found on one special beach, feeding at half tide in the edge of the sea and in the rock pools, evidently getting plenty to eat. Later, it moved about to other beaches, all of the low rocky type. It was possible, by lying up in advance, to watch it at fairly close quarters. Preening, it tossed its long back plumes about with the bill, like a girl combing her hair. When mobbed by a Gull, it stood with neck stretched upright, until the last moment, when it drew its head sharply down on to its back, with bill still erect and open. O. R. & G.G. P.Z.M. H.M.Q. 295 NIGHT HERON. During May there was a bird on the Great Pool, at Tresco. It was an immature bird, first seen in flight and twice sub sequently on a willow bush in the reed bed. It is a bird I know well, having spent a considerable time watching them at their nests in Egypt. It was frequently heard calling in the evening, a sound " like a saw on rough wood." H.R.A. M.B. 297 BITTERN January 11th. One found dead on St. Agnes. O. 301 BEWICK'S SWAN. November 24th. One on Tresco. M.B. 304 WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. In February. Five on St. Agnes. O. 307 PINK-FOOTED GOOSE. October 5th. A small party heard calling in flight over St. Agnes. (The Observers, R. E. Emmett, I. J. Ferguson-Lees and D. I. M. Wallace, know the call notes of this species well). O. 314 CANADA GOOSE. January 7th and 8th. One at Porthellick Pool, St. Mary's. R.S. 53 Scilly Isles 315 SHELDUCK. Big increase in the breeding population. P.Z.M. 325 PINTAIL. December 28th—31st. A few on Porthellick Pool. R, 331 SCAUP. March 12th. Male found, freshly dead, on St. Agnes. September 5th. One seen on Tresco. 332 GOLDENEYE. December 28th—31st. Drake and duck on Porthellick Pool, | St. Mary's. R.i 339 COMMON SCOTER. October 12th. A female, St. Agnes. November 18th. Fifteen seen in Crow Sound. R 340 VELVET SCOTER. December 19th. Duck and drake, . While a rest on the water white wing patch was visible against all-blacn body of male, and brown nigger of female. In flight these large wing patches were very conspicuous on trailing edge of inner wing. R.S. 343 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. December 22nd—31st. Two at Porth Cressa. They seemed to be pursuing sand eels, with head and neck fully extended, propelling themselves at very high speed with wings and feet. R.S. 355 MANX SHEARWATER. Round Island colony apparently thriving. A thorough search on July 4th revealed a total of seven accessible burrows and many more with signs of occupation. There were three chicks, three eggs (one later abandoned as infertile) and one, the contents of which I never determined due to the ferocity of its occupants. A point of interest arose this year, re breeding dates. An egg located on June 5th was just hatching. According to the " Popular Handbook," " the egg is laid from early May to mid- June, incubation period being 51 to 54 days." This egg must, therefore, have been laid in mid-April. A.T.B. 360 GREAT SHEARWATER. April 18th. One off-shore, St. Agnes. 0. 368 FULMAR. From June 4th to 28th, a pair showed more than a passing interest in Round Island. They apparently went through some form of courtship with nesting material (mainly pieces of thrift, 54 Scilly Isles but on occasions the fleshy leaves of one of the Chenopodiacae) and eventually decided on a little cleft on the West side of the Island. I hope they may return next year in time to attempt breeding. A.T.B. 375 LITTLE GREBE. October 9th and 10th. One on the Pool, St. Agnes. O. 376 GREAT NORTHERN DIVER. March 16th, 22nd and 23rd, one off St. Agnes; March 14th, one off St. Martin's; April 30th, one off the Eastern Isles. O. COLLARED DOVE. May 31st, an adult; June 7th, a first-Summer bird; others on September 8th, October 10th—14th, 17th—19th and 25th, on St. Agnes. O. June 11th, 12th and 13th. One on St. Mary's. C.J.S. 394 GREAT SNIPE. April 27th and 30th. An adult on St. Agnes. The bird was flushed on several occasions, usually from bracken and bulb fields, but twice from the shore. In size and flight it more closely resembled Woodcock than Snipe, though its plumage was Snipe-like. White areas at the sides of the tail were noticeable each time the bird was seen. O. 398 JACK SNIPE. May 13th. One on St. Mary's. R.S. On March 10th and from April 21st—23rd, single birds on St. Agnes. Autumn passage exceptionally prolonged—after single birds in September and October, there were up to six every day from October 14th to November 4th. O. 400 GREY PHALAROPE. September 3rd to 12th, one to two, three on 30th and one on October 12th, St. Agnes. O. August 22nd. Three in Gorregan neck. R.S. 401 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. October 30th, two off St. Agnes, and on November 2nd, one off the Eastern Isles. O. 402 TURNSTONE. One accidentally trapped in the porch of the dwellings on Round Island when the wind blew the door shut. It was not caught until it had well nigh exhausted itself against the window. Its anxiety to escape was probably accentuated by the fact that one of the station cats was sitting beside it on the sill, but, as far as I could tell, the cat made no attempt to catch it. When taken outside, it rested for several seconds on my open hand before flying off. A.T.B. 55 Scilly Isles 406 CURLEW SANDPIPER. October 4th. One on St. Agnes. O 407 LITTLE STINT. May 1st and September 3rd. One on St. Agnes. O. R.W.E.W. 408 AMERICAN STINT (LEAST SANDPIPER) October 4th. One on St. Agnes for just over an hour. Full details have been submitted for publication in " British Birds." This is the first record of this American Wader in Scilly and only the sixth or seventh for the British Isles. O. 411 AMERCIAN PECTORAL SANDPIPER. August 27th—28th. Three (all trapped and ringed), two of them remaining on 29th and one till September 12th. The latter was joined by an unringed individual on September 3rd. O. R.G. H.M.Q. 414 BONAPARTE'S (WHITE-RUMPED) SANDPIPER On October 2nd, an emaciated, very thin and tame individual was trapped on St. Agnes. It was still present, but rather wilder, in the morning and afternoon of the 3rd, but was gone by evening. This is only the third record for Scilly, the first since 1870. O. 418 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. September 9th—11th. Three discovered on St. Mary's Airport. P.Z.M. They were seen also by D. M. Harber, F.H.D.H., B.K., H.M.Q. and others. (This record has been accepted by the Rare Birds Com mittee of British Birds.—Eds.). 431 SPOTTED REDSHANK. September 2nd. Three on St. Agnes. O. August 23rd—30th. One on Porthellick in Summer plumage. First noted in flight, by repeated call which sounded like " thuit." General overall colour, sooty with white specks; much longer legs than Redshank which was feeding very near it. R.S. 442 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER. September 30th to October 10th. One on St. Agnes. For most of its stay the bird remained on the same small ploughed field, where it appeared to feed mainly on earthworms. Its chief features were its small size (nearer Dotterel than Golden Plover), compact shape and long legs, large head with whitish " face," dusky underwing and soft call note. This is the first record for Scilly. O. 66 Scilly Isles 446 DOTTEREL. April 29th. Two on St. Mary's Golf Links all day, very tame. P.Z.M. September 20th—21st. One on St. Agnes. J.S-S. G.G. O. 462 BLACK TERN. May 1st, one, and on 3rd, two, on St. Agnes. O. R. & G.G. R.W.E.W. 466 CASPIAN TERN. July 22nd. My sister and I saw two large, red-billed Terns hawking off Tresco, which we identified as Caspian from their heavy build and flight, shortish forked tail and all-red, noticeably heavy bill. Common Terns were also present, so we were able to compare the size, build, etc. The Caspians flew lower over the water than the Commons, and quartered the area very methodically, diving with less of a splash than the smaller birds, and at a slant, not straight down. M.B. 468 ROSEATE TERN. For the first time for several years, one, possible two, pairs bred on Annet. Several other pairs bred in various scattered sites. Eds. 469 COMMON TERN. Terns seem to have had a reasonably successful season. A number have returned to Annet to breed, and other usual sites were occupied. Eds. 470 ARCTIC TERN. These were specifically identified on May 8th, June 26th, August 24th and September 21st. O. 471 LITTLE TERN. May 3rd. One in the Cove, St. Agnes. O. 486 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL. The breeding population on Annet was estimated at c. 150 pairs, and there were also c. 120 pairs on Rosevear, as well as smaller colonies on other Western Rocks. O. 487 GLAUCOUS GULL. May 4th. Two immatures on St. Agnes. O. R. & G.G. 489 KITTIWAKE. A slight decrease in numbers on the St. Helen's colony, but there were several three-egg nests, a thing I have not seen for some years. R.S. The numbers on Gorregan and Men-a-vawr seem to be maintained. H.M.Q. 57 Scilly Isles 491 GREAT SKUA. May 7th. One flying East off Horse Point, St. Agnes. O. 492 POMARINE SKUA. 58 ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF MIGRANTS IN THE ISLES OF SCILLY Since it is impossible in a group of five Islands to distinguish which members of any species are truly passage migrants, and which may be staying to breed or to winter, the records that follow are divided into two categories only : A.—Passage Migrants and Summer Visitors. Those species of which some individuals breed in Scilly are marked with a (b). The dates are those of the first and last appearances of the species, whether as Passage Migrants or Summer Visitors not being known.

62 THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE CIRL BUNTING IN CORNWALL

By J. E. BECKERLEGGE.

Two years ago a request was made of members to report all occurrences of the Cirl Bunting, as it seemed advisable to know the bird's present status in the County. In presenting this report I feel a little like the ancient Israelites who were bidden to make bricks without straw. Not very much information has come to hand. This is due to two facts :— 1. There are many areas in the County where the bird is absent; 2. There are many areas in the County where observers are absent. First, a brief look at the sort of country that the species likes. There are large areas in the County where we cannot expect to see the bird, for it is a bird which, in the breeding season, favours pasture land well provided with timber. It is especially fond of elms. It is also to be found on bushy slopes, especially where sheltered, on hills and downs. Yapp (Birds and Woods) suggests that in its rather curious distribution in Britain " the bird is distributed according to a combination of sunshine, mild winters and low rainfall " and the desired vegetational cover. The species is not supposed to be a migratory one, but it does tend to wander outside the breeding season, when it may be met with in the open fields, mixing with Yellowhammers and other species. And one was seen migrating or passing through St. Ives in the Autumn of 1960. There is evidence to suggest that its status in the County changes from time to time, and that at present it may be declining in numbers. Rodd (Birds of Cornwall, 1880) says of the Cirl Bunting : " . . . a common bird, generally in Cornwall, and particularly so in the neighbourhood of Penzance." I cannot but feel that Rodd was rather too optimistic in his opinion. Clarke, in the ' Victoria County , 1906,' has this to say : In the systematic list, "Resident, but local: breeds south of , in most years at the Lizard, and sparingly elsewhere on the South Coast: has been seen on the Gannel, near Newquay, and may have nested there." In the introductory article to the systematic list he says, " The Cirl Bunting probably breeds near the mouth of the Gannel, the only locality where it has been seen in ." Of the Tamar-Fowey area he says that it nests regularly in the eastern half of the district. Of the Truro-Falmouth area, " appears to breed 63 every year." Of the Lizard-Land's End area, " is still a summer migrant on the south of the Lizard." Coming to more recent times, Col. Ryves and Miss H. M. Quick, in a paper in ' British Birds,' January, 1946, state : " Increased since 1906, but no great change recently, except local decreases (Land's End and areas). Thinly distrib uted, except where there are woody-pasture lands, which it favours. Biggest distribution in mid-Cornwall." That it is still only thinly distributed is borne out by the paucity of records I have received for the years of 1961 and 1962. In 1961, working from east to west, records in the breeding season were received on the South Coast from Fowey, where there was a male in song, and breeding at Ruanlanihorne, Treworthal and Mullion. Inland, a pair bred at Allet. On the North Coast, there were records from Trebetherick, St. Mawgan, and from the Cubert- Newlyn East-Crantock-Newquay area. In fact, the greatest concentration of records came from this latter area, where at least 10 singing males were present. Outside the breeding season, two birds were seen feeding in stubble at Widemouth Bay, Bude. The Allet birds are interesting. I quote Dr. Allsop's notes : " This species was first seen here in the winter of 1957-58; a party of six, with some Yellowhammers, were feeding on hay seeds from food put out for cattle. A pair remained in the neighbourhood throughout 1958-59 winter, and I believed nested in 1960. Although birds were present throughout this period, only in 1958 were young seen, but even then in the following year only one bird was ever heard singing at any time. This state of affairs held until (May) 1961. On the 21st May, 1961, a male was heard and seen singing from its usual perch, a hawthorn tree, but was never heard again during the summer. This was so different from previous years, when song had been heard to some extent in every month of the year, with a minimum in January and February and a maximum in July and August. " On November 22nd, 1961, a short burst of song was heard, and on December 18th a bird was seen and heard singing from a Willow tree for 10 minues. " It would appear that the original male either died or was killed in May after successful breeding, and a young male had now begun to sing or the territory had been taken over by an outsider. The latter seems less likely as it is not a typical Cirl Bunting area, and there can hardly be said to be much pressure on living space by Cirl Buntings." In 1962, records were received of birds in the breeding season at Mawgan Porth (bred), Perranporth (three pairs and breeding presumed), Allet (bred), Rosehill, near Penzance, Porthleven (bred), Helston, Mullion, Landewedack, Smith, Mylor and St. Clement's. After the breeding season, other localities where the Cirl Bunting was seen were Bude, Rock and Lelant, 64 During 1950-60 the bird occurred in many localities where it was not recorded in the last two years. From some of these localities the birds have disappeared, at others it may still be present, with the lack of observers as the cause of lack of recent records. In the Par area, wintering birds were seen on the tennis courts at Par Beach, and in the breeding season on the Gribben peninsula. In the clay-mining area, a singing male was seen and heard at Treverbyn, near Stenalees, in the years 1952-53. In the Truro area, birds on territory were reported from Calenick and Carnon Downs; in the Falmouth area, near Budcck. In the Redruth-Camborne area, a pair at Cambrose until at least 1960, and also at Roseworthy until 1958, since when the locality has not been visited. From the Godolphin district, the bird has not been reported for six years. It also has decreased in the Penzance district, and seems to have decreased very considerably in the Hayle-St. Erth-Lelant- St. Ives area. In 1958-60 the bird was well distributed near the Camel Estuary, on both sides between Wadebridge and the sea, and also seen at Port Isaac. It may well be present in the same numbers, the observer who covered this area having left the County. Reports that the Cirl Bunting was not seen were received from , Gorran Haven, Crowan and St. Ives districts. The general impression I have received from this enquiry can be summed up thus:— 1. The Cirl Bunting has a curiously patchy distribution in the County—there being many places where one might expect to meet the bird. 2. Some of its old localities have been deserted, especially in the St. Ives area. 3. It is liable to appear in new localities, e.g., Allet. 4. It may be a decreasing species, possibly due to the fact that many farmers in the County seem unable to bear the sight of trees and bushes growing along their hedges. There may pos sibly even be inter-specific competition with the Yellow- hammer. The Cirl Bunting may be regarded as the Southern European ecological representative of the Yellowhammer, and probably originated from the Yellowhammer/Pine Bunting group through geographical isolation. However, it is interest ing to note that Yellowhammers have increased at Allet in the same period as the arrival of resident Cirl Buntings. Any decrease in the County may also be due to the increasing use of chemicals on the land. On the other hand, any decrease may be more apparent than real. A. G. Parsons (in litt) informs me that in his experience of the species in Devon and Cornwall, it has a curious way of moving around, and into quite a large area. The birds 65 get " lost " because the nesting area may be two or three fields in from the roads or footpaths used by observers. 5. The enquiry has re-emphasised the fact that we just haven't enough observers in the County, and that large areas are virtually untouched. In conclusion, I should like to thank members who sent in information, whether of a positive or negative nature. In particular, I would thank Dr. Allsop, Mr. A. H. Granville, Mr. H. Mayer-Gross and Mr. A. G. Parsons for the very full and detailed records sent. Preliminary 1963 records received suggest that the species was not badly hit by the severe 1962-63 winter. The names of birds are arranged in strict alphabetical order in the following Index to this Report, like the Telephone Directory— thus " Blue Tit" will be found under " Blue " and " Common Sand piper " under 44 Common"; there is no cross indexing—e.g., " Tit, Blue." The number following the name of each bird is the same as that at the left-hand margin of the pages containing records of birds: and the letters following the number—e.g., CN, are abbrevia tions for the different sections of the Report. CN Cornish Notes ... Pages 6—39 CAD Arrival and Departure of Cornish Breeding Migrants ... Pages 40—44 SI Scilly Isles Notes ... Pages 45—58 SAD Arrival and Departure of Scilly Isles Breeding Migrants ... Pages 59—62 To use the Index find the name of the bird of which records are wanted: the letters following its name indicate in which sec tions of the Report that bird is recorded: the record in any section can then readily be found preceded by the key number. The key number is the same for any bird in all the sections, being the "check-list numbers " from Volume V of the " Handbook."
