University of Sussex Mauro LO DICO, PhD Augustanism in Henry James: His Reception of Horace, Virgil, Livy & Tacitus This thesis examines the influence of Latin literature and values on the fiction of Henry James, with particular reference to the authors who wrote under Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. The similarities between their works and his are analysed in terms of structure, style, setting, plot, theme, imagery, characterisation and didacticism by close readings and comparisons of the texts. The writings to be compared are Horace’s Odes with James’s “Daisy Miller,” Virgil’s Aeneid with The Ambassadors, and the histories of Livy and Tacitus with The Golden Bowl. In the end, this dissertation attempts to demonstrate how the morals that James sought to commend to his young and burgeoning America were based on those of the ancient Augustan age, a period that he may have believed bore a strong resemblance to his own times, while he may also have felt that emulation and appropriation of these canonical classical writers could help him to become a classic himself. Most of the growth is occurring in blended-learning environments, in which students learn online in an adult-supervised environment at least part of the time. As this happens, online learning has the potential to transform America’s education system by serving as the backbone of a system that offers more personalized learning approaches for all students. n Disrupting Class,1 the authors project that by 2019, 50 percent of all high school courses will be delivered online. This pattern of growth is characteristic of a disruptive innovation—an iinnovation that transforms a sector characterized by products or services that are complicated, expensive, inaccessible, and centralized into one with products or services that are simple, affordable, accessible, convenient, and often customizable. Think personal computers, the iPod and mp3s, Southwest Airlines, and TurboTax. At the beginning of any disruptive innovation, the new technology takes root in areas of nonconsumption—where the alternative is nothing at all, so the simple, new innovation is infinitely better. More users adopt it as the disruptive innovation predictably improves. Online learning fits the pattern. It started by serving students in circumstances where there is no alternative for learning—in the advanced courses that many schools struggle to offer in- house; in small, rural, and urban schools that are unable to offer a broad set of courses with highly qualified teachers in certain subject areas; in remedial courses for students who need to recover credits to graduate; and with home-schooled and homebound students.

    Eivor Andersen Oftestad Chapter 3 Translatio Templi: A Conceptual Condition for Jerusalem References in Medieval Scandinavia The present volume traces Jerusalem references in medieval Scandinavia. An impor- tant condition for these references is the idea of Christians’ continuity with the bibli- cal Jerusalem and the Children of Israel. Accordingly, as part of an introduction to the topic, an explanation of this idea is useful and is given in the following. According to the Bible, God revealed himself to the Jews and ordered a house to be built for his dwelling among his people.1 The high priest was the only one allowed to enter His presence in the innermost of the Temple – the Holy of Holies was the exclusive meeting place between God and man. This was where the Ark of the Covenant was preserved, and it was the place for the offering at the Atonement day. The Old Testament temple cult is of fundamental significance for the legitimation of the Christian Church. Although this legitimation has always depended on the idea of continuity between Jewish worship and Christian worship, the continuity has been described variously throughout history. To the medieval Church, a transfer of both divine presence and sacerdotal authority from the Old to the New Covenant was crucial. At the beginning of the twelfth century, which was both in the wake of the first crusade and the period when the Gregorian papacy approved the new Scandinavian Church province, a certain material argument of continuity occurred in Rome that can be described according to a model of translatio templi.2 The notion of translatio can be used to characterize a wide range of phenomena and has been one of several related approaches to establish continuity over time in western history.3 The “translation of the empire,” translatio imperii, was defined by 1 1 Kgs 6:8.

    ISSN: 2011799X Translatio studiorum: Breve historia de la transmisión de los saberes Fabio Vélez Bertomeu [email protected] Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Resumen: El propósito de este artículo es trazar una historia de la translatio studiorum, es decir, el tópico según el cual de este a oeste, junto a la astucia del poder (imperium), se habrían ido trasladando de igual modo el conjunto de los saberes. Lo curioso del asunto es que cuando uno se acerca con atención a los textos descubre, con sorpresa, ciertas obliteraciones estratégicas tanto en lo concerniente al origen (lo egipcio), como por lo que respecta al destino (lo indígena). En efecto, se percibe entonces que la translatio studiorum es un concepto eurocéntrico, anclado y encerrado en una geografía muy concreta, y que ello le obliga no sólo a impostar un origen áureo (lo griego), sino a negar la mera posibilidad de que la sapientia pudiera en algún momento traspasar las Columnas de Hércules. De interés será entonces perseguir las huellas dejadas por las primeras improntas greco-latinas –que tendrán como sintómatica protagonista a una traducción de Ovidio– en el continente recién “descubierto”. Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to trace a history of translatio Studiorum, an expression according to which from East to West, along with the cunning of power (imperium), learning was also transferred. The curious thing is that when the texts are approached carefully, surprisingly enough certain strategic obliterations are discovered, both in relation to the origin (Egyptian), and also as regarding the destination (the indigenous).
