What’s in an Irish Name? A Study of the Personal Naming Systems of Irish and Irish English Liam Mac Mathúna (St Patrick’s College, Dublin) 1. Introduction: The Irish Patronymic System Prior to 1600 While the history of Irish personal names displays general similarities with the fortunes of the country’s place-names, it also shows significant differences, as both first and second names are closely bound up with the ego-identity of those to whom they belong.1 This paper examines how the indigenous system of Gaelic personal names was moulded to the requirements of a foreign, English-medium administration, and how the early twentieth-century cultural revival prompted the re-establish- ment of an Irish-language nomenclature. It sets out the native Irish system of surnames, which distinguishes formally between male and female (married/ un- married) and shows how this was assimilated into the very different English sys- tem, where one surname is applied to all. A distinguishing feature of nomen- clature in Ireland today is the phenomenon of dual Irish and English language naming, with most individuals accepting that there are two versions of their na- me. The uneasy relationship between these two versions, on the fault-line of lan- guage contact, as it were, is also examined. Thus, the paper demonstrates that personal names, at once the pivots of individual and group identity, are a rich source of continuing insight into the dynamics of Irish and English language contact in Ireland. Irish personal names have a long history. Politically, the stalled Northern Ireland peace process is about to be restarted; while socially, the influx of refugees and economic migrants from Eastern Europe and the African continent is forcing us as a people to reconsider our image of ourselves as welcoming and compassionate. By isolating and interrogating the nationalist mythos, Eugene O’Brien’s book problematises the very basis of our thinking about ourselves, yet shows how that thinking is common to nations and nationalist groups throughout the world. O’Brien’s strategy in this book is an important departure in the study of Irish nationalism. -

Kuno Meyer (1858-1919) and Peadar Ó Laoghaire (1839-1920) Post by Olive Morrin, Special Collections & Archives In Special Collections we hold a reproduced copy from the June edition of Studies 1920 titled Canon Peter O’Leary and Dr. Kuno Meyer by Douglas Hyde. Their names had already been linked in June 1911 when on the same day Dublin Corporation conferred the Freedom of the City on both men and Cork City followed suit the following September. Douglas Hyde writes “It seems altogether reasonable to couple Father Peter with Dr. Kuno Meyer.......because these two, each in his own way ...did work for Irish nationalism through the medium of Irish literature, which nobody else did.....Kuno Meyer established the School of Irish Learning, bringing us back into the long past centuries. Father Peter grasped us as we are in the present, and by his masterly handling of the living speech projected us along the road which we must travel.....” Kuno Meyer was a German scholar of Celtic languages who translated early Irish literature for English and German readers. In 1884 he became a lecturer in German at Liverpool University. During this time he published his English translation of Aislinge Meic Conglinne (The vision of MacConglinne) which is also held in Special Collections. Later he became professor of Celtic Studies and in 1903 he founded the School of Irish Learning, Dublin and the following year he founded and edited its journal Ériu. He became professor of Celtic Studies at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat Berlin in 1911 and also in the same year was made a freeman of both the cities of Dublin and Cork along with Peadar Ó Laoghaire who was a key figure in the revival of modern Irish. -
Definite and Generic Nouns in Irish
Definite and generic nouns in Irish As a learner of Irish, I have sought an explanation of use (or non-use) of the definite article in Irish. A neat explanation seems hard to find. The preponderance of academic interest seems to be in Old Irish, or in linguistic theories that relate Irish (often in the form of An Caighdeán Oifigiúil, the CO, a form of the language, if it even be held to be a legitimate form of the language, that has no genuine native speakers) to theories of universal grammar. Although there remains a degree of academic interest in the Irish of the Gaeltacht—the Cainnt na nDaoine that the early Irish revivalists pinned their hopes on—learners of Irish generally have few good reference works to turn to, relying heavily on Graiméar Gaeilge na mBráithe Críostaí (GGBC), the most comprehensive Irish-language reference work of Irish. In the case of study of the definite article—a rather fundamental aspect of Irish grammar that learners have to tackle at an early stage—GGBC appears poorly grounded in a thorough survey of Cainnt na nDaoine, which is ultimately the only valid source for any statements on aspects of Irish grammar made by reference works. GGBC has a section on use of the definite article, but one that focuses on a discussion of instances where use of the article is prescribed in Irish, but not found in English. Only a few lines in §§7.15 and 7.16 are given to omission of the article where it would be found in English. -

The lectures and the discussions were of a high standard, and it was the intention of the organisers to edit and publish the proceedings as soon as possible thereafter.
