Lodge, Director Graduate Program in Biological Sciences Notre Dame, Indiana August 2009 HUMAN-MEDIATED DISPERSAL OF AQUATIC NONINDIGENOUS SPECIES: IMPACTS AND INTERVENTIONS Abstract by John D. Rothlisberger The introduction and establishment of species beyond the boundaries of their native ranges is an environmental issue of increasing scope and seriousness. This dissertation examines the consequences of the establishment of aquatic nonindigenous species (NIS) in the Laurentian Great Lakes (GL) region and also investigates alternatives for reducing anthropogenic spread of nuisance aquatic NIS. I first investigate the pathways by which aquatic NIS are introduced to the GL to learn if introduction pathway is related to where species originate and how likely they are to have spread beyond the GL basin. My analysis shows that ballast water release is highly likely to introduce new aquatic NIS to North America, whereas unauthorized release of organisms in trade tends to introduce to the GL aquatic NIS already established in North America. Moreover, it appears that it is primarily a matter of time before novel NIS that become established in the GL appear in other North American waterways. I also consider the relationship between introduction pathway and species impacts, finding that John D. Rothlisberger there is an apparent relationship, but that further study of species-specific impacts is needed to verify this finding. Given the importance of ballast water release in bringing novel species to the GL, I use a novel technique to estimate the economic impacts in the region of ecological changes caused by populations of aquatic NIS introduced by this pathway.

New and modified classes appear every year and it is important to gather information and review results as quickly as possible. For dinghy classes there have been no changes to the original Yardsticks published for the 2013/14 season, as results for review have not been forthcoming. In the absence of race results data for dinghy classes and new internationally sourced classes, where there is yardstick data from overseas available, a comparison is made with other international classes to derive an equivalent Yachting Victoria yardstick value. This is explained further down in this document. Fortunately for catamaran classes, there has been significant work done by the Kurnell Catamaran Club in reviewing various catamaran ratings, as well as validating the ratings against the international SCHRS system. This work has now been incorporated into the YV yardsticks for catamaran classes. Much appreciation goes to KCC for this good work. Catamaran yardsticks are now contained in a separate document: “YV - Cat Yardsticks13_14 v1.0” USE OF THE YV YARDSTICKS A club which intends to run a race or event under the Yachting Victoria Yardstick system should include in the Notice of Race and in the Sailing Instructions clauses based on the following: 1 The version of the YV Yardstick System that is to be used in calculating the mixed class fleet racing results.

Also on my lawn I was surprised to see that a Meadow Waxcap fungus had sprung up a couple of weeks after I thought my garden fungus season was over - later I added another fungus to my day list with a smart fresh Yellow Fieldcap (Bolbitius vitellinus) growing from a cowpat on the South Moors Internet photos of Yellow Fieldcap and Meadow Waxcap My proposed route was along the shore from Langstone to Farlington Marshes lake and as the wind was forecast to become increasingly strong from the south- east, and the tide to be rising from low at 9.0am I thought it best to follow the shore with the wind behind me on the way out and to stick to the cycle track and roads on the way home so I rode down Wade Court Road listening out for garden birds among which I heard bursts of song from more than one Dunnock (not a bird I associate with winter song) and saw two smart cock Pheasants in the horse feeding area immediately south of Wade Court.

    Australia Day Weekend 24, 25 and 26 January 2015 Jessica Watson OAM Tom King OAM Inverloch Classic Wooden Inverloch Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta Ambassador Dinghy Regatta Patron December 2014 Newsletter - 1 - South Gippsland Yacht Club Commodore’s Invitation I am really excited to be able to invite and extend a very warm welcome to all sailors and visitors to join us at South Gippsland Yacht Club over the Australia Day Weekend in January 2015 to celebrate Inverloch’s sailing and seaside heritage. On 2 January 1893, when Inverloch was a small and isolated seaside community, an Inverloch Yacht Club conducted a race. Not long afterwards Regatta Days became regular celebrations. Activities included sailing, sculling, swimming, diving and sliding a barrel out over the water along a greasy pole. By the 1920s this vital little town was attracting increasing numbers of holiday makers. Amongst them was Len Morris, who in 1928 launched his 11 foot sailing dinghy ‘Olive’, the basis of a class that became the Moth and later the International Moth Class. Inverloch Jetty Regatta Day 1926 - Sliding the barrel out along the greasy pole. Source Inverloch Historical Society This coming Regatta we are very fortunate to be celebrating with two well known sailors- Jessica Watson OAM, ‘2011 Young Australian of the Year’ and Tom King OAM, Mirror World Champion and a 470 Olympic Gold Medallist. On Saturday evening Jessica, introduced by Tom, will give an inspirational presentation on her sailing adventures. The Yacht Club provides a family friendly environment, assists juniors learning to sail and has nurtured junior sailors who have become national and international champions.

Version Control: V1.0 02/2020 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS Introduction This annual Regatta hosted by Nedlands Yacht Club commemorates the loss of HMAS Perth (I) (D-29) at the ferocious 1st of March 1942 Battle of Sunda Strait during which 352 Australian servicemen perished along with Capt. Hector Waller, DSO, RAN. HMAS Perth (I) survivors wanted the sinking of their ship and their captain (Hector Waller) remembered and a yacht race was suggested. The first regatta was held in 1960 at the Fremantle Sailing Club. The construction of the Fishing Boat Harbour stopped this club’s sailing in 1963. The Nedlands Yacht Club has conducted the Regatta since 1964. The regattas have been warmly supported by the survivors of the sinking and their families. The regatta is an open invitational yardstick regatta for off the beach dinghies and catamarans, keelboats, trailable cruisers, sportsboats and multihulls. Racing will be divided into six divisions based on class performance. Prizes are awarded in each division. 1. ORGANISING AUTHORITY 1.1. The Organising Authority is the Nedlands Yacht Club (Inc.) – NYC. 1.2. The NYC regatta Committee is appointed “Race Committee”. 1.3. The “Officer of the Day” (OOD) is the NYC Regatta Committee representative with the authority of the “Race Committee”. 2. RULES 2.1. The Event will be governed by the Rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). 2.2. The Australian Sailing Prescriptions and Special Regulations will apply.
