Sailing Week special edition August 2013 NEWHAVEN AND SEAFORD SAILING CLUB SAILING WEEK 2013. If you have never been to Sailing Week you are missing out on a great part of being a mem- ber of NSSC. You do not have to attend every part of the week. Pick and Mix. Some members bring their families and camp for the week – without sailing. Some members work mornings and come just for the afternoon races. Some members come for the evening social events. The event is open to non members – so you can bring friends to join in the fun. The Galley will be open all day for food and drinks. The bar is open at lunchtimes and evenings. 470 Rigging Instructions 1. Stepping the mast up. a. Ensure the mast partner slit is open. b. With the boat on the grass, step inside (clean or remove shoes first!), and receive the mast. i. Ensure the heel of the mast is clean. ii. If continuous jib sheet, ensure around the mast slot. c. Place the heel of the mast in the shoe inside the boat d. Lean the mast forward, against the deck. e. Free the forestay and attach it. f. Free the shrouds and trapeze, ensure not twisted, and attach them. g. Free the other controls (vang, cunningham, spinnaker halyard, topping lift, down haul), ensure not twisted and attach them. h. Close the mast partner slit. 2. Rigging the boat a. Attach the tack and head of the jib. b. Run the foot of the main sail through the boom, attach the clew and tack. i. On some boats the tack can only be attached after the boom is secured in the gooseneck. ii. On some of the boats it is easier to hoist the mainsail and latch its halyard first, and only then attach the gooseneck and the tack. c. Attach the all 3 ends of the spinnaker and bag it. i. Note: the spinnaker lines should be the outermost, while its halyard stays close to the mast (between the jib lines). ii. Ensure the halyards are not twisted. d. Hoist the jib and attach the halyard cable loop to the tensioner hook. i. VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the hook catches the metal cable loop and not the messenger line!!! e. -

Portsmouth Number List 2019 The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the typical performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. Experimental numbers are based on fewer returns and are to be used as a guide for clubs to allocate as a starting number before reviewing and adjusting where necessary. The list of experimental Portsmouth Numbers will be periodically reviewed by the RYA and is based on data received via PY Online. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only. The RYA list is not definitive and clubs should adjust where necessary. HUMAN-MEDIATED DISPERSAL OF AQUATIC NONINDIGENOUS SPECIES: IMPACTS AND INTERVENTIONS A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by John D. Rothlisberger David M. Lodge, Director Graduate Program in Biological Sciences Notre Dame, Indiana August 2009 HUMAN-MEDIATED DISPERSAL OF AQUATIC NONINDIGENOUS SPECIES: IMPACTS AND INTERVENTIONS Abstract by John D. Rothlisberger The introduction and establishment of species beyond the boundaries of their native ranges is an environmental issue of increasing scope and seriousness. This dissertation examines the consequences of the establishment of aquatic nonindigenous species (NIS) in the Laurentian Great Lakes (GL) region and also investigates alternatives for reducing anthropogenic spread of nuisance aquatic NIS. I first investigate the pathways by which aquatic NIS are introduced to the GL to learn if introduction pathway is related to where species originate and how likely they are to have spread beyond the GL basin. My analysis shows that ballast water release is highly likely to introduce new aquatic NIS to North America, whereas unauthorized release of organisms in trade tends to introduce to the GL aquatic NIS already established in North America. Moreover, it appears that it is primarily a matter of time before novel NIS that become established in the GL appear in other North American waterways. I also consider the relationship between introduction pathway and species impacts, finding that John D. Rothlisberger there is an apparent relationship, but that further study of species-specific impacts is needed to verify this finding. Given the importance of ballast water release in bringing novel species to the GL, I use a novel technique to estimate the economic impacts in the region of ecological changes caused by populations of aquatic NIS introduced by this pathway.
