So, it was very easy to walk back and forth between , the of New Jersey and Africa. 220 million years ago there were no towns, no states, no countries. And the seven continents that we know today were all joined together into– that’sone very the large land mass Supercontinent "Pangaea."

The rest WHOA!!WHOA!! ..and REALREAL of the New Jersey had no WWAATER!!!TER!!! was one beaches! BIG ocean...

In fact, STOP! New Jersey was just about in You’re the middle of Pangaea. Splashing It was probably part of a Me!! big desert in those days. HANGOUT NJ CONTINENTAL DRIFT PAGE 4

Of course, the weather was a lot different in those days too. It was always HOT – there were no winters. In fact, there was no North Pole!

The plants were very different too. There were some trees that were like Redwoods and Pine Trees. There were many tall trees that looked a lot like the Palm Trees we see in Florida today.

Then during the Period, 206 – 144 millions of years ago, large land areas of Pangaea started to break up and move! The movement of continents is called Continental Drift.

The continents are able to move because they are drifting atop the liquid core of the Earth. HANGOUT NJ CONTINENTAL DRIFT PAGE 5

As the continents moved apart, water came in from the sea and formed streams, rivers, and then oceans.

The area we call North America started to move north and westward away from Africa. The could no longer roam from one continent to another, the way they were once able to, because of the great amount of water that now separated most of the continents. HANGOUT NJ CONTINENTAL DRIFT PAGE 6

The continents had moved farther ..New Jersey and farther apart. got beaches! The Atlantic Ocean was formed and...

The Continents are still drifting. North America moves Westward toward ... the speed is 1 to 10 centimeters a .
