ORGANON 24 : 1988 AUTEURS ET PROBLÈMES Karolina Targosz (Poland) FIRMAMENTUM SO BI ESC I A NUM —THE MAGNIFICENT BAROQUE ATLAS OF THE SKY The preparation and publication of the last works of Johannes Hevelius, the Gdańsk astronomer of European renown, met with particular adversities of fortune, and it was only after the author’s death that the publication was accomplished. When the printing of the second part of his great work, Machina coelestis (Gdańsk 1679) was drawing to an end, Hevelius wrote in the letters to his friends about his further works. He enumerated them in his letter of April 14, 1678 written to the Polish Jesuit and mathematician, Adam Adamandus Kochański, who at that time stayed in Wrocław.1 These were : Prodromus astronomiae, Catalogus stellarum fixarum, the result of his observations performed for many years, XJranographia or the atlas of the particular constellations, and Globi coelestes—two large general maps of the sky. They were to form four positions linked up one with another ; the first one was of a descriptive-explanatory character, the second a catalogue, and the third and fourth were illustrative. Machinae coelestis pars posterior was dedicated by Hevelius to King John III Sobieski, who, from the year 1677 on, paid him a regular annual pension. The astronomer intended to dedicate the subsequent works to his former patron, King Louis XIV, hoping to regain the French pension paid to him in the years 1663— 1671 but stopped because of financial difficulties.2 In spring of the year 1679 Hevelius expected that he would be able to print his works already in the following year.3 1 J.

  • The Golden Age of Celestial Cartography
Occasional Paper #10 Of Beauties and Beasts: The Golden Age of Celestial Cartography by Nick Kanas, M.D. February 2011 Of Beauties and Beasts: The Golden Age of Celestial Cartography Nick Kanas, M.D. Dr. Kanas is Professor Emeritus (Psychiatry) at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a NASA-funded Principal Investigator and an amateur astronomer. He has collected antiquarian celestial maps and books for over 30 years. Among his 200+ publications are the books Space Psychology and Psychiatry (with Dietrich Manzey, now in its 2nd Edition) and Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography. All images in this paper are from the Nick and Carolynn Kanas Collection. Cover illustration: Plate showing several northern constellations, taken from Jean Fortin’s 1795 French edition of John Flamsteed’s famous atlas, entitled: Atlas Celeste de Flamsteed. 15.7 X 20.6 cm (from re-engraved plates about a third the size of Flamsteed’s originals, making Fortin’s popular atlas easier to use). In addition to the classical Greek constellations, note the constellations introduced by Johannes Hevelius: Lacerta (“le Lezard”), Vulpecula (“le Renard”), and Anser (“l’ Oye”), which is now obsolete in modern star charts. The California Map Society was founded in 1978, an outgrowth of the historically-oriented Sir Francis Drake Quadracentennial Commission, State of California. The focus of the Society has been on maps of California, mapping in California, map collections and map collecting. As such, the Society is not centered on a single cartographic aspect or group; rather it retains a diversified membership and reaches out to all map enthusiasts.

  • Appendix A: Collecting Celestial Maps and Prints
Appendix A: Collecting celestial maps and prints Collecting antiquarian celestial maps is actually a specialized area of map collect- ing in general, similar to other specialized areas (e.g., county or state maps of a country, maps of a country or continent, road maps, sea charts, maps of military campaigns, town plans, maps of an individual mapmaker, maps of a particular period of time). In all of these cases, one is concerned with such issues as authen- ticity, condition of the paper, type of colorization (if any), displaying the map, preservation, and price. Much of what will be said below could be said of any antiquarian map, be it celestial or terrestrial. I will only touch on some of the high- lights specifically related to collecting celestial maps; more information is given in the references at the end. One issue that sometimes comes up has to do with the ethics of buying any kind of antiquarian map that was once part of a bound atlas. Since it is sometimes more profitable to sell a series of individual pieces than to sell a bound collection, some dealers have been known to buy an atlas and then cut it up into individual pieces. Many book dealers consider this to be unethical. However, many antiquarian maps were originally produced in a loose state and were never bound up in an atlas. In addition, many atlases that are purchased by dealers are already damaged or incomplete to begin with and would have no value as a bound source. Finally, most collectors cannot afford to buy a complete atlas but can afford to buy an individual piece, and in this way antiquarian maps remain in circulation for the enjoyment of people rather than being stored away somewhere unseen and unappreciated.
