Cropped, as usual, on the neat line, to the right cut about 5mm into the printed area. The imprint is on places somewhat weaker and /or ink has been faded out. One small hole (1,7x1,4cm.) in lower part, inland of Russia. As often, the parchment is wavy, with light water staining, usual staining and surface dust. First state of two. The title and imprint appear in a cartouche, crowned by the printer's mark of Willem Jansz Blaeu [INDEFESSVS AGENDO], at the center of the lower border. Scale cartouches appear in four corners of the chart, and richly decorated coats of arms have been engraved in the interior. The chart is oriented to the west. It shows the seacoasts of Europe from Novaya Zemlya and the Gulf of Sydra in the east, and the Azores and the west coast of Greenland in the west. In the north the chart extends to the northern coast of Spitsbergen, and in the south to the Canary Islands. The eastern part of the Mediterranean id included in the North African interior. The chart is printed on parchment and coloured by a contemporary hand. The colours red and green and blue still present, other colours faded. An intriguing line in green colour, 34 cm long and about 3mm bold is running offshore the Norwegian coast all the way south of Greenland, and closely following Tara Polar Arctic Circle ! Blaeu's chart greatly influenced other Amsterdam publisher's. -

CONSTELLATION TRIANGULUM, THE TRIANGLE Triangulum is a small constellation in the northern sky. Its name is Latin for "triangle", derived from its three brightest stars, which form a long and narrow triangle. Known to the ancient Babylonians and Greeks, Triangulum was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy. The celestial cartographers Johann Bayer and John Flamsteed catalogued the constellation's stars, giving six of them Bayer designations. The white stars Beta and Gamma Trianguli, of apparent magnitudes 3.00 and 4.00, respectively, form the base of the triangle and the yellow-white Alpha Trianguli, of magnitude 3.41, the apex. Iota Trianguli is a notable double star system, and there are three star systems with planets located in Triangulum. The constellation contains several galaxies, the brightest and nearest of which is the Triangulum Galaxy or Messier 33—a member of the Local Group. The first quasar ever observed, 3C 48, also lies within Triangulum's boundaries. HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY In the Babylonian star catalogues, Triangulum, together with Gamma Andromedae, formed the constellation known as MULAPIN "The Plough". It is notable as the first constellation presented on (and giving its name to) a pair of tablets containing canonical star lists that were compiled around 1000 BC, the MUL.APIN. The Plough was the first constellation of the "Way of Enlil"—that is, the northernmost quarter of the Sun's path, which corresponds to the 45 days on either side of summer solstice. Its first appearance in the pre-dawn sky (heliacal rising) in February marked the time to begin spring ploughing in Mesopotamia. -

Johannes Hevelius’ atlas of constellations, based on a lifetime’s researches from this private observatory, was the finest of its time, and one of the few ever to be produced by a practicing astronomer rather than a cartographer. Gedani : Typis Johannis-Zachariæ Stolli, 1690. 18 3/4 inches (400 mm), [20], 350, [2] pp. Johannes Hevelius’ (1611–1687) atlas of constellations was the finest of its time, and one of the few ever to be produced by a practicing astronomer rather than a cartographer., the Stellaburgum in his native Danzig (Gdansk), the work was published posthumously with an introduction by the author’s widow. It consists of three texts: a technological and methodological Prodromus Astronomiae (Spreads 19–103), the Catalogus Stellarum Fixarum, a catalogue of 1564 stars, arranged alphabetically by constellation, subdivided by stellar magnitude (Spreads 103–208), and the Firmamentum Sobiescianum (Spreads 5–17), named for his royal patron—Kepler had commemorated the Emperor Rudolf II in similar style in the title of Tabulae Rudolphinae. Its accompanying atlas of 54 double- page plates (Spreads 209–314) and 2 large folding planispheres depicting the northern and southern skies (Spreads 314 and 316). These engravings are the glory of the book, wonderful specimens of the Michelangelo approach to the night sky a Sistine ceiling of constellations. In producing his atlas, Hevelius, whose portrait appears at Spread 30, had the enormous advantage of having himself discovered more than 600 new stars from which to draw in devising a dozen new constellations. -

McClendon, Chair By its very nature as a “book of the world”—a product simultaneously artistic and intellectual—the world atlas of the seventeenth century promoted a totalizing global view designed to inform, educate, and delight readers by describing the entire world through science and imagination, mathematics and wonder. Yet early modern atlas makers faced two important challenges to commercial success. First, there were many similar products available from competitors at home and abroad. Secondly, they faced consumer skepticism about the authority of any work claiming to describe the entire world, in the period before standards of publishing credibility were established, and before the transition from trust in premodern geographic authorities to trust in modern authorities was complete. ii This study argues that commercial world atlas compilers of London and Paris strove to meet these challenges through marketing strategies of authorial self-presentation designed to promote their authority to create a trustworthy world atlas. It identifies and examines several key personas that, deployed through atlas texts and portraits, together formed a self-presentation asserting the atlas producer’s cultural authority. -

THE CONSTELLATION MUSCA, THE FLY Musca Australis (Latin: Southern Fly) is a small constellation in the deep southern sky. It was one of twelve constellations created by Petrus Plancius from the observations of Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman and it first appeared on a 35-cm diameter celestial globe published in 1597 in Amsterdam by Plancius and Jodocus Hondius. The first depiction of this constellation in a celestial atlas was in Johann Bayer's Uranometria of 1603. It was also known as Apis (Latin: bee) for two hundred years. Musca remains below the horizon for most Northern Hemisphere observers. Also known as the Southern or Indian Fly, the French Mouche Australe ou Indienne, the German Südliche Fliege, and the Italian Mosca Australe, it lies partly in the Milky Way, south of Crux and east of the Chamaeleon. De Houtman included it in his southern star catalogue in 1598 under the Dutch name De Vlieghe, ‘The Fly’ This title generally is supposed to have been substituted by La Caille, about 1752, for Bayer's Apis, the Bee; but Halley, in 1679, had called it Musca Apis; and even previous to him, Riccioli catalogued it as Apis seu Musca. Even in our day the idea of a Bee prevails, for Stieler's Planisphere of 1872 has Biene, and an alternative title in France is Abeille. When the Northern Fly was merged with Aries by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1929, Musca Australis was given its modern shortened name Musca. It is the only official constellation depicting an insect. Julius Schiller, who redrew and named all the 88 constellations united Musca with the Bird of Paradise and the Chamaeleon as mother Eve. -
The Most Beautiful Book Ever Published on the Constellations
The most beautiful book ever published on the constellations Andreas Cellarius. Harmonia macrocosmica, seu Atlas universalis et novus. Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, 1661. 20 7/8 inches x 13 inches (530 x 330 mm), 364 pages, engraved and colored title page, 29 hand-colored plates. The seventeenth century was the Golden Age of Dutch cartography, in which the availability of large copperplates, superb draftsmanship, and immaculate coloring were combined with a period exuberance of detail—for winds, anchors, and a compass rose were more important to a map’s effect than many a minor inland town. The earth and sea in that nautical era were the chief subjects of attention; the celestial atlas remained a rarity. Cellarius’ Harmonia macrocosmica, however, has claims to be the most beautiful book ever published on the constellations, with delineations not only of the zodiac but the different cosmological systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe. Cellarius himself remains a shadowy figure, but he was most likely a German or a Pole as his name suggests — it is a Latinization of Keller or Kellner. Cellarius produced an atlas of Poland and Lithuania in 1652, and at the time of publication of Harmonia macrocosmica was rector of the Latin School at Hoorn, roughly twenty miles north of Amsterdam. The plates are brilliantly colored, highlighted in gold, with all the baroque trimmings. What space remains after a celestial hemisphere has been imposed on a huge rectangular sheet is filled to overflowing with banners, clouds, diagrams, mythological figures, portraits of astronomers and their observatories, or cherubs playing with sextants and telescopes.
