Acknowledgements The process of conceptualizing, researching, and writing this dissertation has challenged me both professionally and personally in that this project has been almost as much auto/ethnography as it has been historical ethnography. While it is has always been my intention to produce a written work that I could share with the community of La Feria, I have also written this dissertation for myself. It is a history of the town where my mother was born and lived the earliest years of her life after our family emigrated from Mexico. While it has, at times, felt like opening old wounds to write about practices of segregation, it is my hope that also writing about integration may help to heal those wounds. I would first and foremost like to thank the people of La Feria, who so generously welcomed me into their community as a prodigal daughter, scholar, fellow traveler, and friend. -

Matz 1 I’d like to begin by commending Mary – you and everybody else who is associated with the Harlingen Historical Preservation Society. What you do is something that is so really very important. I had a chance to visit with Rafael for a little bit while we were setting things up. That you are able to attract people like Rafael to become members of your group I think is really great. I also would like to congratulate you folks for what you did at the Harlingen Museum. We became aware of the Dia de los Muertos “the Day of the Dead” exhibits from Mary Lou. The exhibits were outstanding. I just hope that each year more and more people will come and have a chance to see those because it’s obvious that an awful lot time and effort went into what was done. I would like to mention that we have some friends of ours here today, Joan and Rod Olson. They spend four or five months up north where it’s a little bit cooler in the summer and then come down here in the winter time just like the ducks and the geese. So, we’re glad you’re here as well as Lynn Lerberg, their daughter. That having been said, I guess what I’d like to do today is talk a little bit about both Mom and Dad. -

MEDIA COVERAGE ON KILLER ROBOTS 10 July– 25 August 2015 The open letter issued by artificial intelligence and robots researchers calling for a ban on autonomous weapons was presented at the Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires on 28 July 2015 and generated huge media coverage throughout the US and internationally. Much attention focused on prominent signatories including Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Steve Wozniak, Noam Chomsky, Jaan Tallinn, and Max Tegmark, while a web post by the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots identified some of the prominent female signatories. Human Rights Watch intern Robert Pattillo has compiled the following list of 1,821 articles generated by the artificial intelligence call to ban autonomous weapons. In terms of lanugages covered, he found 594 articles in English language media outlets, 326 in Spanish, 180 in French, 152 in Russian, 123 in Chinese (Mandarin), 66 in German, 48 in Korean, 37 in Dutch, 34 in Turkish, 27 in Greek, 26 in Arabic, 22 in Portuguese, 22 in Romanian, 20 in Polish, 19 in Indonesian Bahasa, 16 in Japanese, 14 in Bulgarian, 13 in Ukrainian, 14 in Italian, 9 in Hungarian, 6 in Croatian, 6 in Vietnamese, 5 in Czech, 5 in Slovak, 4 in Estonian, 3 in Danish, 3 in Norwegian, 3 in Latvian, 3 in Serbian, 3 in Slovenian, 2 in Azerbaijani, 2 in Mongolian, 2 in Finnish, 2 in Hebrew, 2 in Thai, 2 in Urdu, 2 in Farsi, and one article each in Afrikaans, Catalan, Lithuanian, and Somali. A substantial number of media outlets published variations of AP or AFP wire stories on the letter. -

Valley Morning Star and Harlingen Print Media Chronology Compiled by Norman Rozeff, Harlingen Historical Preservation Society, 5/07 4/08 Marion M. Osborn commences publication of a weekly. In the 1910 census he noted to be a 35-year old Kansan living with his 32 year old wife Nellie and children Agnes 14, Robert 11, and Susan 4. In 1910 Nellie is a founding member of the First Methodist Church of Harlingen and Marion joins the congregation. 1909 According to a later Harlingen Star article by its owners in 1925, the newspaper had been started this year. 7/30/10 Harlingen Star printer is shot according to a brief Brownsville Herald article. 11/25/13 H. A. Gibbs is editor of the Harlingen Star newspaper. He and his wife may have taken over the weekly as early as 1909. He also serves on the City Commission 4/12 through 11/16. 1915 Gregorio Garcia, who came to Harlingen in 1910, publishes El Precurso, the first Spanish language newspaper in town. 10/29/18 S. A. Pipes is publishing the Harlingen Star. 1/7/20 V. P DuBose and T. C. Claypool purchase the Harlingen Star from T. G. Locke. 7/27/21 Dubose sells Harlingen Star to F. M. Allen of Austin. On 11/2/21 G. K. Shearer is named to be its editor. The paper soon upgrades to a linotype machine that provides fresh type for each issue and a uniform style. Sometime after the above date, George Stout, a contractor who came with his wife to Harlingen in 1921, is to buy and own the Star until July 1925. -

MANY STARS COME FROM TEXAS. t h e T erry fo un d atio n MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER he Terry Foundation is nearing its sixteenth anniversary and what began modestly in 1986 is now the largest Tprivate source of scholarships for University of Texas and Texas A&M University. This April, the universities selected 350 outstanding Texas high school seniors as interview finalists for Terry Scholarships. After the interviews were completed, a record 165 new 2002 Terry Scholars were named. We are indebted to the 57 Scholar Alumni who joined the members of our Board of Directors in serving on eleven interview panels to select the new Scholars. These freshmen Scholars will join their fellow upperclass Scholars next fall in College Station and Austin as part of a total anticipated 550 Scholars: the largest group of Terry Scholars ever enrolled at one time. The spring of 2002 also brought graduation to 71 Terry Scholars, many of whom graduated with honors and are moving on to further their education in graduate studies or Howard L. Terry join the workforce. We also mark 2002 by paying tribute to one of the Foundations most dedicated advocates. Coach Darrell K. Royal retired from the Foundation board after fourteen years of outstanding leadership and service. A friend for many years, Darrell was instrumental in the formation of the Terry Foundation and served on the Board of Directors since its inception. We will miss his seasoned wisdom, his keen wit, and his discerning ability to judge character: all traits that contributed to his success as a coach and recruiter and helped him guide the University of Texas football team to three national championships. -
The State of Texas Defines 'Spillover Violence' As Mexican
“The state of Texas defines „spillover violence‟ as Mexican Cartel-related violence that occurs in Texas, including aggravated assault, extortion, kidnapping, torture, rape and murder. The victims of these crimes include illegal immigrants being smuggled into the United States, Mexican or U.S. citizens working with the Cartels or their innocent family members, and those who are not associated in any way with the Cartels or transnational gangs.” –Director Steve McCraw, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Mexico Spillover: From 2005 – 2011 2011 February 2011 On Saturday, 02-05-11 at approximately 16:00, three teenagers were shot to death at the Super Autos Porvenir car lot in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Two of the victims, Juan Carlos Echeverri-Luna and Carlos Mario Gonzalez-Bermudez were U.S. citizens attending private schools in El Paso, Texas. The third victim, Cesar Yalin MIRAMONTES-Jimenez was a Mexican National and a student at Tecnologico de Monterrey in Ciudad Juarez, Mx. (EPIC, Texas Rangers, Associated Press http://www.valleynewslive.com/Global/story.asp?S=13990800 ) On 02/06/11, information received from a Houston CHS who has proven to be very reliable in the past provided the following information: "Gulf Cartel in Nuevo Laredo is planning on having a female or maybe a male walk across Laredo International Bridge 1 POE and drop a live hand grenade toward the US Border Patrol underneath Bridge I. The purpose of the grenade attack is to create an incident where to place blame on the Zetas." (FBI) Received on 02-11-11 that FBI Houston re-contacted FBI-Laredo for dissemination that a highly placed Sub-Source of CHS who is a Ministerial Police with direct contact with HERIBERTO LAZCANO-LAZCANO unwittingly provided information as to a planned grenade attack at the Laredo POE Bridge I IN NUEVO LAREDO.
