Re/Defining the Imaginary Museum of National Music The Case of Croatia Zdravko Blažekovic´ The historian is a product of history himself, and of his situation. However hard we may try, he cannot escape the molding of his mind by his experience and his surroundings.1 Music historiography in Croatia was throughout the twentieth century marked by the path established in the late nineteenth century by Franjo Ksaver Kuhač (1834-1911), who defined the criteria for inclusion of musicians into the national canon on the basis of their Croatian ethnic origin rather than presenting cultural circles in which they were active. In the twentieth century, the central influence on the definition of the canon of Croatian music history came from Josip Andreis (1909-1982) in his historical survey published in three Croatian editions (Razvoj muzičke umjetnosti u Hrvatskoj [The development of musical arts in Croatia], 1962; Povijest hrvatske glazbe [History of Croatian music], 1974, 1989) and two English editions (Music in Croatia 1974, 1982). Synthesizing the existing views about Croatian music, he constructed in his narrative a museum of Croatian and foreign com- posers active in Croatia, as well as composers born in Croatia but living abroad. Besides nationalistic traits inherited from Kuhač, a reason for emphasizing activities of composers working abroad were the political and cultural circumstances surrounding Andreis during the time of communist Yugoslavia, when Croatian connections with the Central European musical space were particularly appreciated, especially when the quality of composers living abroad surpassed the musical production within the country. Being a part of multina- tional Yugoslavia situated between the Eastern and Western cultural and religious spheres, Croatians at the time wanted to distance themselves from the cultures in Eastern Europe and felt the need to be reassured about their belonging to Slavia Latina. -

OBLJETNICE 10 KVARTAL II - 4 - 2005 ZANEMARENI KIPAR Dalibor PranËeviÊ OSCAR NEMON S ljedeÊe godine navrπava se sto godina od izloæba u Hrvatskoj, ostao je neodreen. roenja Oscara Nemona, prema naπem sudu Anglofoni kritiËari, s druge strane, uglavnom neopravdano zapostavljenog hrvatskog kipara prepoznaju ime Oscara Nemona, viπe ili manje dvadesetog stoljeÊa. Doduπe, umjetnikovo ime uspjeπno interpretirajuÊi njegovu umjetniËku nije nepoznato hrvatskim piscima o umjetnosti aktivnost i prireujuÊi izloæbe njegovih radova.5 - o njemu su pisali povjesniËari umjetnosti Nadalje, iznimna su bila zalaganja savjetnice mahom vezani uz osjeËki ambijent,1 dok ga za kulturu pri Ambasadi Republike Hrvatske u Gamulin u svom pregledu Hrvatsko kiparstvo Londonu, Flore Turner, koja su u prosincu 2001. XIX. i XX. stoljeÊa sasvim izostavlja.2 Mediji su godine rezultirala zanimljivom izloæbom Oscar kiparu posvetili prostor prilikom inauguracije Nemon, Osijek 1906 - Oxford 1985 (Croatian portreta Sir Winstona Churchilla πto ga je Alice Cultural Centre, London). Tom je prilikom bilo Nemon Stuart Hiller,3 jedna od nasljednica kipa- moguÊe vidjeti pojedine kiparove radove, kao i rove ostavπtine i voditeljica Nemonove zaklade, fotografije njegovih javnih spomenika, te doku- poklonila Veleposlanstvu Velike Britanije u Zag- mentarne fotografije iz umjetnikova atelijera rebu. Pisalo se tada o zanimljivostima iz Nemo- πto ih je snimio umjetnikov sin Falcon Nemon nova æivota, odnosno o njegovim poznanstvima Stuart. Zanimljivom se pokazala suradnja Flore s vaænim liËnostima dvadesetog stoljeÊa, kao i Turner s ljudima involviranim u interpretaciju o skoroj izloæbi kiparova djela prigodom stote Nemonova æivota i djela, prvenstveno suradnja obljetnice njegova roenja. Pred nekoliko godina s meunarodnim savjetnikom za muzeje najavljena je i opπirna monografija s relevantnim Peterom Cannon Brookesom, koji je napisao tekstovima o njegovu æivotu i djelu.4 No, godina kratak tekst u deplijanu izloæbe. -

Between 1409 and 1420, almost all Dalmatian communes acknowled- ged the rule of the Venetian Republic, which resulted in the integration of the entire northern and eastern Adriatic coast into a single political, territorial, and administrative system. This brought about a whole series of changes in the pre- viously autonomous communes: urban, ethnic, and linguistic, and also social and economic changes examined in this paper. We look at the impact on inflows and outflows of both traditional and precautionary programs, also taking into account the characteristics of the programs. Using the entropy balancing method to address the selection bias, we find that traditional IMF programs have an anticatalytic effect on private capital inflows; this effect is mainly driven by programs that went off-track and by exceptional access programs. By contrast, precautionary programs are found to have a catalytic effect, working mainly through outflows. JEL Classification: F33, F34, G11, G15. The awards, started in 2004, are given for Life and Annual Achievement and for Contribution to the Life of Local Communities in the field of conservation.This is in memory of Vicko Andrić, 1793 – 1866, an architect and surveyor and the first Croatian conservator, responsible for preservation of many monuments in Croatia. The public at large, professionals and institutions, can nominate people who they think deserve such honours and I would like to express my thanks to those who proposed my name and to those who supported their proposition. Last autumn, I visited for the first time the Town Museum in SISAK, Roman SISCIA, a treasure trove of archaeological finds, from all periods, including Roman, who were settled there from the 1st to the 4th century AD. The Museum had recently employed a conservator and wanted to establish a conservation workshop, to be able to do at least some work at home, instead of sending to other workshops. -
Vlaho Bukovac and My Search for His Paintings in England
VLAHO BUKOVAC AND MY SEARCH FOR HIS PAINTINGS IN ENGLAND It was in the late 1980s, after I had read the delightful autobiography by the painter Vlaho Bukovac, 1855 – 1922, published in Zagreb in 1918, that I realised that this important Croatian artist had found “home from home” in North Yorkshire, just as I had done in the small town of Bedale, my late husband's family home. Harrogate, where Samson Fox, 1838 – 1903, one of Vlaho's most important collectors in England lived, was only a matter of miles away from Bedale, a drive of less than an hour. Harrogate was then, and still is today, a lively spa town, where people came to drink sulphur waters for their health, to spend a holiday, to enjoy themselves, to make friends, to see exhibitions and to go to the theatre. The famous Royal Pump Room, now a museum, was a place to meet. Samson Fox, the ancestor of the present day well known acting family, Edward, Robert, James, Emilia Fox, to mention just a few, was a self-made engineer and a clever business man, who had invented an important part for the engines of steamships and had thus become very wealthy himself. He had been elected three times the Mayor of Harrogate, never repeated since, owing to his good works and generosity to many causes. His bust, by Prince Victor von Hohenlohe-Langenborg, still graces the corridors of the Royal College of Music in London. Fox had donated £45,000, a very large amount at the time, for the building of the College in 1894. -

In reality, however, many talented painters struggled immensely to reach that top, while an even larger number of mediocre painters could only dream of fame and glory. This research is not primarily concerned with the elite artists, nor does it cover the many anonymous painter-craftsmen in the periphery of the art market. Instead, it is devoted to the middle group of ambitious and skilled artists trying to break out of the margins of the art world. Sixteenth-century Venice was a city with an abundance of churches, scuole and palaces, and was governed by a culturally sophisticated elite. -

Andrea Schiavone tra Parmigianino, Tintoretto e Tiziano Venecija, Museo Correr 28. studeni 2015. – 10. travanj 2016. autori izložbe Enrico Maria Dal Pozzolo, Lionello Puppi Prva monografska izložba posvećena Andrei Schiavoneu (Zadar, oko 1510. – Venecija, 1563.), održana u veneci- / janskom Museo Correr od kraja stude- nog 2015. do početka travnja 2016. godine, doista je osvijetlila lik i prvenstveno djelo umjetnika kojeg su i hrvatska i talijanska historiografija shvaćale kao “svojeg”.1 Izlož- ba iza koje stoji ozbiljan istraživački pro- jekt Sveučilišta u Veroni (Problemi del mani- erismo lagunare: da Andrea Schiavone a El Greco, od 2014., voditelj Enrico Maria Dal Pozzo- lo) okupila je niz istraživača koji su obradi- li najvažnije aspekte života i umjetničkog djelovanja slikara dalmatinskoga podrijetla čija je pojava u Veneciji 16. stoljeća izazva- la oprečne reakcije među suvremenicima. Premda povremeno prisutan u stručnoj li- teraturi i nakon monografije Francisa Ri- chardsona objavljene sada već davne 1980. godine,2 Schiavoneovo je vrijeme, čini se, tek došlo.
