This utopian, unrealized concept was based on the ideals of cosmopolitanism, pacifism and humanism, but also derived from a foundation of Jewish ethics and philosophy. It thus established the principles of a new school of thought, a new social movement and an ideal social community – in a time of destruction of cultural and human values by nationalist and racist ideologies. Keywords: Oscar Nemon, utopia, Jews, ethics, humanity, cosmopolitism INTRODUCTION 41 n the period between 1933 and the mid-1940s, Oscar Nemon2 conceived and promoted his proposal for a System of Universal Ethics, alongside a related architectural project for the Centre of Universal Ethics.3 These combined concepts represent a one-off de- Iparture from his established sculptural practices to explore the possibilities of social utopi- anism, which was itself indicative of the sociohistorical context of the time in which it orig- inated – Oscar Nemon’s initial development of his ideas for the System of Universal Ethics collided with the Nazis’ rise to power. The project was concluded just after the end of the World War II. Nemon’s undertaking – universal ethics – comprised two components, real- ized through the separate media of intellectual discourse and artistic form. The theoretical articulation of his concept combined pacifism and humanism within a framework of Jewish ethics and a philosophy of morality, to create the basis for a new school of thought, a new social movement and an ideal social community. The “concrete” or plastic arts component conceived a bold modernist architectural building as the centre-piece of this movement. Nemon’s dedication and commitment to this unrealized and unfulfilled utopian project (doubly unfulfilled: as architecture and as a social system or movement) is corroborated by numerous sketches, photographs, written notes and texts.4 This paper deals with the idea and content of Nemon’s System of Universal Ethics, focusing on its social meaning and reception and the cultural, historical and political context of its emergence, as well as on a comparison with some other examples of utopian artistic projects. An analysis of the form and style of architecture of the Centre of Universal Ethics will be presented elsewhere. This 1 This paper was co-funded by the Croatian Science Foundation Project no. 4153 Croatia and Central Europe: Art and Politics in the Late Modern Period (1780–1945). 2 Oscar Nemon (1906–1985), a sculptor of Jewish origin, was born in Osijek, Croatia. He worked in Vienna (1925), Brussels (1925– 1936) and England (1936–1985). He is best known for his portrait sculptures and monuments of Sigmund Freud and Winston Churchill. Art and Politics paper also takes into account the sequence of texts in which the artist speculates on social ethics and the idea of utopian society in particular.

Margaret Thatcher Rt. Hon. Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven L.G., O.M., F.R.S. Official booklet to mark the unveiling on 21st February 2007 of the bronze statue of Baroness Thatcher sculpted by Antony Dufort for the House of Commons. Edited by Malcolm Hay, Curator of Works of Art, Palace of Westminster. Clay for the portrait head of Margaret Thatcher, June 2005 (Photo: Antony Dufort) “This historic commission is a very fitting way to remember Margaret Thatcher’s time in the House of Commons and I am very pleased to welcome the statue joining those of the other Prime Ministers of the 20th Century in Members’ Lobby.” Rt. Hon. Michael Martin MP Speaker of the House of Commons Baroness Thatcher is the latest 20th Century Prime Minister to be represented in Members’ Lobby immediately outside the House of Commons Debating Chamber. This over life-size bronze statue by Antony Dufort recognises her contribution to British politics during her three terms of office as premier and records her rightful place in parliamentary history as the United Kingdom’s first woman Prime Minister. Her statue looks towards the doors of the Commons Chamber, facing that of Sir Winston Churchill by Oscar Nemon, which since the late 1960s has stood sentinel to this historic Chamber, its foot touched in the early years for good luck by Tory Members before giving speeches in the Chamber and more recently by all those visiting the House. Since then, statues of David Lloyd George and Clement Attlee have been added to this historic space, together with busts of James Ramsay MacDonald, Harold Wilson, James Callaghan, Edward Heath, Anthony Eden, Harold Macmillan, Stanley Baldwin and Alec Douglas-Home.

  • Post-War Public Art Protection, Care and Conservation
Post-War Public Art Protection, Care and Conservation In partnership with Summary Public art can be enjoyed by us all. Everyone can play a part in valuing and caring for it. This guidance is aimed at anyone who manages or has responsibility for post-war public art, including local authorities, charitable bodies, community groups, heritage professionals and custodians. Public art is defined here as fixed artworks which members of the public are able to access and enjoy, in public, semi-public or privately owned public space, whether outdoors or indoors. This document outlines good practice on the care and management of post-war public art, including regular maintenance and planned conservation work. It sets out the different ways that the best of our public art can be identified and protected and the statutory duties that relate to its ownership and care. Key principles include a clear understanding of ownership and lines of responsibility; inclusive and transparent decision making; regular condition checks to detect potential sources of harm; and engaging the public in valuing and caring for public art. This guidance document is part of Historic England’s range of practical guidance which helps people care for their historic places. It complements Historic England’s Introduction to Heritage Assets, Public Art 1945–95. This guidance note has been prepared by Geraint Franklin. First published by Historic England in September 2016.
