Josh Norek has been immersed in many aspects of the Latin music industry for over twenty years. He founded and continues to serve as the president of the music royalties collection firm Regalías Digitales. Previously, Norek served for ten years as VP of Business Affairs & Digital for Nacional Records, the leading record label for Latin rock and hip-hop. At Nacional he managed the label’s digital retail and licensing strategies, as well as the company’s sister publishing company Canciones Nacionales. Norek has overseen the launch of albums from Grammy-winning artists including Manu Chao, Ana Tijoux & Nortec Collective, and guided Manu Chao’s “La Radiolina” album to #1 on the Billboard sales charts. He is also a co-founder of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), and co-hosts the nationally syndicated public radio show “The Latin Alternative.” In addition, he was the music supervisor for the Univision/Netflix series “El Chapo.” Norek has participated on the boards of advocacy organizations such as A2IM (American Association of Independent Musicians) and Voto Latino. He is a graduate of Cornell University and Southwestern Law School. An accomplished producer and mixer, Juan Manuel Caipo has run Rockolito Music for the past 12 years. He was the executive producer and producer of the 2016 Concord Records Quiero Creedence Latin tribute album to Creedence Clearwater Revival, which featured Juan Gabriel, Bunbury, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top & Enanitos Verdes. He has worked with artists such as Ana Barbara, Chuchito Valdez, Calamaro, Ozomatli, Bang Data, La Misa Negra, and has secured sync placements for his music in programs and ad campaigns including “Breaking Bad,” “CSI,” and T-Mobile.     Alejandro L. Madrid. 2008. Nor-tee Rifa!: Electronic Dance Music from Tijuana to the World. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Reviewed by Gavin Mueller The burgeoning field of electronic dance music (EDM) scholarship has drawn from a number of theoretical and methodological perspectives. In particular, the disciplinary melange that is cultural studies, whose rise in academia coincided with EDM's rise in popular music during the 1980s and '90s, has proven an effective tool for researchers seeking to understand the social worlds and political and economic contexts in which EDM sounds and styles arise. Alejandro L. Madrid's Nor-tee Rita! is one such effort, a sorely needed piece of research in a non-Western EDM scene, when academia in general has lagged behind popular publications and blogs in the documenta­ tion and analysis of global EDM. The book's purported object of analysis-a Tijuana-based scene knit together through aesthetic practices rooted in the appropriation of the sounds and images of northern Mexico-is appropriately conceptualized for a cultural studies approach. Furthermore, as an ethnomusicologist familiar with cultural theory, Madrid can undergird arguments rooted in post-structuralist theories with solid ethnographic data drawn from participant observation among artists and fans. In the author's words, this is "primarily a book about borders" (3), and these borders are a poten­ tially rich site of investigation, since the music's home base of Tijuana is nestled between worlds, while the "heterogeneous music whose styles are as diverse as the number of musicians, producers, and DJs that compose it" (9) nudges up against several genres of EDM.

The first introduces the concept of “the aural border”, my attempt to listen to the US-Mexico border as a geography of sound and music. The second explores this notion through an excerpt from a critical performance text of mine, “Border Sound Files: An Audio Essay”, which tells musical stories of the border as a key site of globalization. 1. The Aural Border I want to pose a few starting points for understanding what it might mean to consider the US-Mexico border as a field of sound, a terrain of musicality and music-making, of static and noise, of melodic convergence and dissonant clashing. And by this I don’t nec- essarily mean assembling a laundry list of every song ever written about the border or of every band or musician ever from the border (though this project has its own merits). I mean opening the doors to a new archive of historicity and analysis, a new methodology of understanding the audio-formation of national and social identities within specific, delineated geopolitical territories. I am understanding the aural border as both an archaeology and a genealogy of “sub- jugated knowledges” or “disqualified knowledges” that unveil the many multivalent ways the very idea of the border gets constructed and disseminated through sound and music. This entails both the “release” and “emancipation” of hidden and repressed “local discur- sivities” (its archaeological function) and the praxis or “tactics” required to bring them into play in service of “opposition and of struggle against the coercion of a theoretical, unitary, formal, and scientific discourse” (its genealogical function) (Foucault 1980: 80).
