Playas de Tijuana border fence mural INTERNET FIELD TRIP Julieta and Yvonne Venegas are two of the most important creatives to hail from our BajaCali region. (See photo on “A Message to Reflect On”page). Born in 1970 in Long Beach, CA, Julieta and Yvonne have spent their formative years crossing both sides of the border. Julieta is one of the most important Spanish language singers and songwriters. She currently resides in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Yvonne is a notable photographer who has shown her work internationally. Their father continues to run a humble family photography shop in downtown Tijuana. Julieta’s music reflects the very unique geography in which we find ourselves in CaliBaja. Northern Mexico has always been incredibly diverse. In the early 20th century the area became home to several groups of German, Polish, and Eastern European immigrants who brought with them things such as the accordion and polka music, which continue to play important roles in Northern Mexican folk tunes. Additionally, the BajaCali region is home to a fusion of Chinese and Mexican foods and cultures as home to the largest Chinese population in Mexico. Additionally this immigration continues to happen as Central American, Haitian, United States, and even Amish cultures converge onto this one region. Julieta’s music is influenced by these diverse sources and inspirations and is a uniquely Tijuanense creation. This is her most famous song and it is almost an anthem of Tijuana. I want you to notice the fusion of European, American, and Mexican cultural elements and her primary use of the accordion. Of course, it’s ok if you don’t understand the lyrics, they are beautiful without understanding. The title of the song is “Me Voy” (I’m going): https://vimeo.com/124225136. Next, I want you to experience the Nortec Collective. This is a group from the BajaCali region that uses very northern Mexican and Southern Californian musical elements. This music video is filmed in the very familiar streets of downtown Tijuana and it is in English, a testament to the unique bilingual nature of the region, yet is has an almost polka like, Eastern European rhythm to it: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=162&v=ilaBhIKbyw0&feature=emb_logo WE HEAR FROM SCRIPTURE… Romans 12:1-8 I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. We're pleased to welcome trumpeter Nate Henrichon to our virtual music roster! Like Bronwyn, Nate is recording with an accompaniment track that Nina made for him, collaborating via email. In this format, we are closer to Nate and his trumpet than we normally would be in church. If you listen carefully, you can hear trumpet valves moving when he plays a trill. NOW MAY THE GRACE OF GOD WHICH IS BEYOND OUR UNDERSTANDING, THE LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST WHICH IS BEYOND OUR DESERVING, AND THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BE WITH EACH OF YOU BOTH NOW AND FOREVERMORE. AMEN PERFORMANCE NOTES Nina Gilbert, pianist and music director Bronwyn Allen-Kaeser, soprano and office manager Nate Henrichon, trumpet The real reason we’re offering Bach and Mozart this week is that Nate has prepared a trumpet solo and Nina’s been thinking fondly of the Mozart fantasia. But we can also connect these pieces to Baja California! Namely: in 1991, when the Soviet Union dissolved, an 18-member Russian chamber orchestra migrated together to Tijuana, where they performed and taught lessons, starting a tradition of European classical music that still thrives there. Audio File 1: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Fantasia in D minor, K. 397/385g Mozart left this piece unfinished in 1782. After his death, his publisher’s friend August Eberhard Müller (a church cantor and music editor), composed ten measures to conclude it. In 1944 (!), music collector Paul Hirsch traced the work through early editions and correspondence. A few pianists have since composed their own endings for the work, and what I’m playing today is by Ephraim Hackmey, who wrote a thesis on this piece at Indiana University in 2012. Audio File 2: “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” 1923; words by Thomas O. Chisholm (1866-1960), music by William Marion Runyan (1870-1957) Chisholm wrote the poem first. Runyan later recalled, “I wrote harmonies to some 20 or 25 of his poems. This particular poem held such an appeal that I prayed most earnestly that my tune might carry over its message in a worthy way, and the subsequent history of its use indicates that God answers prayer.” Audio File 4: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Air, from Orchestral Suite in D major, BWV 1068 Originally for string orchestra, this movement was transposed and transcribed for solo violin and organ by the 19th-century German violinist August Wilhelmj, who noted that his arrangement could be performed completely on the lowest string of the violin, namely the G string. Thus the piece has become known as “Air on the G string,” even when performed on other instruments that don’t have strings. Perspectives on New Wave Cumbia | norient.com 7 Oct 2021 06:12:57 Perspectives on New Wave Cumbia by Moses Iten Since the beginning of the 21st century «new wave cumbia» has been growing as an independent club culture simultaneously in several parts of the world. Innovative producers have reinvented the dance music-style cumbia and thus produced countless new subgenres. The common ground: they mix traditional Latin American cumbia-rhythms with rough electronic sounds. An insider perspective on a rapid evolution. From the Norient book Out of the Absurdity of Life (see and order here). https://norient.com/stories/new-wave-cumbia Page 1 of 15 Perspectives on New Wave Cumbia | norient.com 7 Oct 2021 06:12:58 Dreams are made of being at the right place at the right time and in early June 2007 I happened to arrive in Tijuana, Mexico. Tijuana had been proclaimed a new cultural Mecca by the US magazine Newsweek, largely due to the output of a group of artists called Nortec Collective and inadvertently spawned a new scene – a movement – called nor-tec (Mexican norteno folk music and techno). In 2001, the release of the compilation album Nortec Collective: The Tijuana Sessions Vol.1 (Palm Pictures) catapulted Tijuana from its reputation of being a sleazy, drug-crime infested Mexico/US border town to the frontline of hipness. Instantly it was hailed as a laboratory for artists exploring the clash of worlds: haves and have-nots, consumption and its leftovers, South meeting North, developed vs. underdeveloped nations, technology vs. folklore. After having hosted some of the first parties in Australia featuring members of the Nortec Collective back in 2005 and 2006, the connection was made.

  • Alejandro L. Madrid. 2008. Nor-Tee Rifa!: Electronic Dance Music from Tijuana to the World
Alejandro L. Madrid. 2008. Nor-tee Rifa!: Electronic Dance Music from Tijuana to the World. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Reviewed by Gavin Mueller The burgeoning field of electronic dance music (EDM) scholarship has drawn from a number of theoretical and methodological perspectives. In particular, the disciplinary melange that is cultural studies, whose rise in academia coincided with EDM's rise in popular music during the 1980s and '90s, has proven an effective tool for researchers seeking to understand the social worlds and political and economic contexts in which EDM sounds and styles arise. Alejandro L. Madrid's Nor-tee Rita! is one such effort, a sorely needed piece of research in a non-Western EDM scene, when academia in general has lagged behind popular publications and blogs in the documenta tion and analysis of global EDM. The book's purported object of analysis-a Tijuana-based scene knit together through aesthetic practices rooted in the appropriation of the sounds and images of northern Mexico-is appropriately conceptualized for a cultural studies approach. Furthermore, as an ethnomusicologist familiar with cultural theory, Madrid can undergird arguments rooted in post-structuralist theories with solid ethnographic data drawn from participant observation among artists and fans. In the author's words, this is "primarily a book about borders" (3), and these borders are a poten tially rich site of investigation, since the music's home base of Tijuana is nestled between worlds, while the "heterogeneous music whose styles are as diverse as the number of musicians, producers, and DJs that compose it" (9) nudges up against several genres of EDM.

  • Listening to the Line: Notes on Music, Globalization, and the US-Mexico Border1
Rev17-01 5/4/05 19:46 Página 143 Josh Kun* ➲ Listening to the Line: Notes on Music, Globalization, and the US-Mexico Border1 The following is an experiment in theory and practice, and is therefore divided into two parts. The first introduces the concept of “the aural border”, my attempt to listen to the US-Mexico border as a geography of sound and music. The second explores this notion through an excerpt from a critical performance text of mine, “Border Sound Files: An Audio Essay”, which tells musical stories of the border as a key site of globalization. 1. The Aural Border I want to pose a few starting points for understanding what it might mean to consider the US-Mexico border as a field of sound, a terrain of musicality and music-making, of static and noise, of melodic convergence and dissonant clashing. And by this I don’t nec- essarily mean assembling a laundry list of every song ever written about the border or of every band or musician ever from the border (though this project has its own merits). I mean opening the doors to a new archive of historicity and analysis, a new methodology of understanding the audio-formation of national and social identities within specific, delineated geopolitical territories. I am understanding the aural border as both an archaeology and a genealogy of “sub- jugated knowledges” or “disqualified knowledges” that unveil the many multivalent ways the very idea of the border gets constructed and disseminated through sound and music. This entails both the “release” and “emancipation” of hidden and repressed “local discur- sivities” (its archaeological function) and the praxis or “tactics” required to bring them into play in service of “opposition and of struggle against the coercion of a theoretical, unitary, formal, and scientific discourse” (its genealogical function) (Foucault 1980: 80).
