Collins, Jr.b aDepartment of Scientific Computing, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, USA bDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, Florida A&M - Florida State University, College of Engineering, Tallahassee, FL, USA ABSTRACT Motion planning for legged machines such as RHex-type robots is far less developed than motion planning for wheeled vehicles. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of kinematic and dynamic models for such platforms. Physics based models are difficult to develop for legged robots due to the difficulty of modeling the robot-terrain interaction and their overall complexity. This paper presents a data driven approach in developing a kinematic model for the X-RHex Lite (XRL) platform. The methodology utilizes a feed-forward neural network to relate gait parameters to vehicle velocities. Keywords: Legged Robots, Kinematic Modeling, Neural Network 1. INTRODUCTION The motion of a legged vehicle is governed by the gait it uses to move. Stable gaits can provide significantly different speeds and types of motion. The goal of this paper is to use a neural network to relate the parameters that define the gait an X-RHex Lite (XRL) robot uses to move to angular, forward and lateral velocities. This is a critical step in developing a motion planner for a legged robot. The approach taken in this paper is very similar to approaches taken to learn forward predictive models for skid-steered robots. For example, this approach was used to learn a forward predictive model for the Crusher UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle).1 RHex-type robot may be viewed as a special case of skid-steered vehicle as their rotating C-legs are always pointed in the same direction. -

EC8.19 October 4, 2019 To: Chair and Members of the Economic and Community Development Committee: Re: Exploring the potential opportunity of Toronto becoming a host city of Formula E: the sustainable electric motorsport of the 21st century Dear colleagues, I am writing to request that we explore the potential to bring FormulaE to the City of Toronto. Formula E was conceived in 2011 by FIA (International Automobile Federation) President and former Scuderia Ferrari General Manager Jean Todt and Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag as the world's first all-electric international car racing platform. The first race was held in Beijing's Olympic Park in 2014, and has grown into a global entertainment brand with 11 teams and 22 drivers. There are multiple major international corporate sponsors and 9 global automobile manufacturers are engaged; including Jaguar, Nissan, BMW, Audi, DS (Peugeot), and Mahindra. Formula E describes its venue metropolises as being the 'most progressive' cities in the world, and they include New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Seoul, Jakarta, Rome, and Mexico City, among others. Formula E markets itself as a cutting edge catalyst to propel the latest electric vehicle design and research work, as well as improving driving experiences for everyday car users of all classes and types, all while providing incredible entertainment. As the capital city of North America's top auto-producing region with over 2.2 million vehicles assembled in 2017, Toronto has long benefited from the economic activity, employment, and tax revenue generated by the automobile sector. Over 200 companies in southern Ontario are developing autonomous vehicle technology, with our automobile sector employing over 100,000, and generating almost 20% of manufacturing GDP. -

Car manufacturers steadily expand the offered product portfolio and invent new market niches constantly. Often, this is not done to meet the customers’ expectations but rather to match and rival a competitor’s model lineup. The increase in model variety results in a significant increase in the complexity of production and manufacturing, more difficult and demanding work surrounding employees, and massive negative impacts on the environment. Not only are cars unsustainable in the way they are used, but also in the way they are produced. For a more sustainable future of and with cars to be possible, this practice of product portfolio expansion needs to be critically analyzed. It is, in my eyes, additionally necessary to evaluate the essence of the car industry, the car itself, and to re-think what defines a car. This paper critically analyzes the car industry and the production and development of cars, and it proposes an alternative to standard car design based on the idea and ability of speculative and critical design to highlight issues of today. The proposed concept is a speculative design alternative to car design, aiming to put sustainability and the customers back into the focus of car development, and discover what is possible, rather than probable, in the future of cars. -

Transition theory emphasizes that development of sustainable technologies such as EVs can be achieved within niches, which are protective spaces that shield sustainable technologies from mainstream market selection pressures. An interesting environment that has generally been known for innovative developments with regard to mobility has recently seen an increased usage of EVs. This environment is the motorsport. This paper therefore aims to identify the role that the electric motorsport as niche plays in the development of EVs for a transition towards a more sustainable mobility system. In order to fulfil this aim, a qualitative research approach was used where both semi-structured interviews and grey literature was analysed. The electrification of certain categories of the FIA World Rallycross Championship as well as the Extreme E were selected to exemplify the entire electric motorsport. The protective space conceptualisation of Smith and Raven (2012) that focuses on shielding, nurturing and empowering processes was used to conduct the analysis and describe the electric motorsport as a niche. The analysis showed that the electric motorsport as niche shows great capabilities of making contributions towards the development of EVs, but currently is not utilised to this potential. -

Horst Baier 2016 Abstract I Abstract The herein presented investigations address the implementation of a holistic design process for Pressure-Actuated Cellular Structures (PACS) and include their realization and characterization. Similar to the motion of nastic plants, the actuation principle of these biologically inspired shape- variable structures bases on the controlled expansion of pressurized volumes. The advantages of fluidic actuation are combined with an adaptive single-curved structure that deforms continuously and with controllable stiffness between predefined states of shape. Benfits from the utilization of such a structure are expected within the fields of aeronautical, automobile, power and civil engineering. The herein presented research bases on the so far purely theoretical investigations of Pagitz et al. [1]. Their work covers the description of the functional principle, the implementation of a numerical structural model, an approach for the shape-optimization procedure and the identification of structural characteristics. The preceding studies are limited to the numerical simulation on the basis of two- dimensional truss-structures. The effects of model assumptions and the validity of the underlying methods are so far not evaluated. Some substantial structural subsystems are not yet described or identified and their influence on the overall structure is not examined. The identification of open issues, the development and the validation of design methods, as well as the evaluation of the performance of the concept of PACS are realized in consideration of the holistic system. -

E., Obadare Bolatito J Abstract— This paper proposes an improved benefits of integration of Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV) and Portable Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PMRI) system in relation to developing Precision Agricultural (PA) that is capable of carrying out a dynamic internal quality assessment of crop developmental stages during pre-harvest period. A comprehensive review was carried out on application of UAV technology to Precision Agriculture (PA) progress and evolving research work on developing a Portable MRI system. The disadvantages of using traditional way of obtaining Precision Agricultural (PA) were shown. Proposed Model Architecture of Coupled Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV) and Portable Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PMRI) System were developed and the advantages of the proposed system were displayed. It is predicted that the proposed method can be useful for Precision Agriculture (PA) which will reduce the cost implication of Pre-harvest processing of farm produce based on non-destructive technique.
