Master's Thesis Master’s Thesis Cars The future is flexible Author: Lennart Schmitz Supervisor: Zeenath Hasan, Mikael Blomqvist Examiner: Mathilda Tham Term: VT18 Subject: Design Level: Second Level Course code:5DI34E Abstract Cars have been around for over a century and have grown to become an essential part of society with an increasing number of different models being sold and developed each year. Car manufacturers steadily expand the offered product portfolio and invent new market niches constantly. Often, this is not done to meet the customers’ expectations but rather to match and rival a competitor’s model lineup. The increase in model variety results in a significant increase in the complexity of production and manufacturing, more difficult and demanding work surrounding employees, and massive negative impacts on the environment. Not only are cars unsustainable in the way they are used, but also in the way they are produced. For a more sustainable future of and with cars to be possible, this practice of product portfolio expansion needs to be critically analyzed. It is, in my eyes, additionally necessary to evaluate the essence of the car industry, the car itself, and to re-think what defines a car. This paper critically analyzes the car industry and the production and development of cars, and it proposes an alternative to standard car design based on the idea and ability of speculative and critical design to highlight issues of today. The proposed concept is a speculative design alternative to car design, aiming to put sustainability and the customers back into the focus of car development, and discover what is possible, rather than probable, in the future of cars. The proposed concept aims at changing the understanding of cars and turns the car from being fixed and immutable into alterable and changeable objects, depending on the use-case and user. By analyzing manufacturing procedures and future trends, and interviewing experts from various disciplines, insights are used to evaluate the proposed alternative. Horst Baier 2016 Abstract I Abstract The herein presented investigations address the implementation of a holistic design process for Pressure-Actuated Cellular Structures (PACS) and include their realization and characterization. Similar to the motion of nastic plants, the actuation principle of these biologically inspired shape- variable structures bases on the controlled expansion of pressurized volumes. The advantages of fluidic actuation are combined with an adaptive single-curved structure that deforms continuously and with controllable stiffness between predefined states of shape. Benfits from the utilization of such a structure are expected within the fields of aeronautical, automobile, power and civil engineering. The herein presented research bases on the so far purely theoretical investigations of Pagitz et al. [1]. Their work covers the description of the functional principle, the implementation of a numerical structural model, an approach for the shape-optimization procedure and the identification of structural characteristics. The preceding studies are limited to the numerical simulation on the basis of two- dimensional truss-structures. The effects of model assumptions and the validity of the underlying methods are so far not evaluated. Some substantial structural subsystems are not yet described or identified and their influence on the overall structure is not examined. The identification of open issues, the development and the validation of design methods, as well as the evaluation of the performance of the concept of PACS are realized in consideration of the holistic system.

    Contemporary Car Design Idioms: shifting the paradigm from literal to phenomenal transparency George D.Liamadis, Assistant Professor School of Visual and Applied Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki [email protected] Abstract In the post 9-11 period of social insecurity and terror that followed since, transparency hardly became the mainstream paradigm in car design. Iconic cars like the Renault Avantime, which epitomized the essence of openness, ended up as symbols of a future that never came. Instead of leading the way to a bright, ethereal future, they were rather used to signify the dangers of a threatening world in dystopian Sci-Fi films such as “The Children of Men” by Alfonso Cuaron. As lightness and movement -inherent qualities of the very essence of the car- could not be revealed through openness anymore, alternative ways to express these qualities had to be invented. Literal transparency was soon substituted by phenomenal transparency through design languages and idioms such as the bone lines, flame surfacing and the recent layered look. Βone Lines, defined as hard, positive only, linear 'peaks' in a car's bodyside, prominent enough to imply an outer skin stretched over something more structural, have been used heavily in automotive design. The bone line idiom is an effective metaphor for transparency, as it is no less than an expression of the content, flexible enough to follow –and equally reflect - the architectural qualities that lie beneath. Traces of phenomenal transparency can also be detected in a new emerging trend evolving in auto design lately: the layered look. According to this trend, car design moves beyond the long mighty paradigm of sleek monobodies to a sliced-and-angled appearance, where the car body seems to be made of parts layered atop a primary, inner structure.

I feel that car companies are beginning to see previous mistakes and engineer for a future in which physically lighter cars are requisite. This leads me to the question; how do we as designers communicate this in a positive way and sell a future efficient, lightweight lifestyle?.. I began the project by considering “What is Lightweight” especially in its visual and emotional forms. This thought process lead me to the use of abstract photography of light itself to help me to create a new lightweight BMW design language. The final result is a mixture of lightweight, twisting, structural forms that flow around the user to create a floating interior architecture. This will allow for, in a future autonomous world, the exposure of a fully lightweight transportation experience. Shadow is not the absence of light, merely the obstruction of the luminous rays by an opaque body.

With this model, BMW Group Design initiates a fundamental discourse about the characteristics that will affect the development of cars in future.
