In 1958 he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and became an active member of the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. He was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment on Robben Island. He held various positions in the ANC after his release and was elected deputy secretary-general of the ANC in 1991. From 1994 to 1999 he was the KwaZulu–Natal Member of the Executive Council for Economic Affairs and Tourism and was elected deputy president of the ANC in 1997. Mr Zuma served as the Executive Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa from June 1999 to June 2005, and in 2007 he was elected president of the ANC. He became the first general-secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers in 1982. In 1991, he was elected secretary-general of the African National Congress (ANC) and subsequently became head of the ANC team that negotiated the transition to democracy.
