Furthermore, children can benefit from learning opportunities offered through The Peninsula Academy: the hotel’s original experiential guest-activity program. Registered guests at any of the group’s 10 hotels worldwide may take advantage of an exciting array of personalized tours, classes and activities designed from a local perspective and highlighting key aspects of each location’s lifestyle, arts, cuisine, culture, heritage and more. The following programs are recommended for children’s enjoyment.

Karate Kid Experience Don a traditional karate uniform and learn about the history and proper protocol of Karate from Shihan (teacher) Kudaka at a 60-year-old Kenkokan Dojo. Karate, a Japanese form of martial art with origins in Okinawa, was born as a form of self-defence and was later renamed Karate-do meaning “the way of the empty hand.” The Shihan will introduce protocol, warm-up exercises, basic movements and techniques followed by a Kata (Karate form) demonstration. A personalized certificate that shows completion of the Karate-do experience, a photograph, a personalized karate uniform and chauffeured transportation via a MINI Cooper are included.

The Fun of Faux Food: Hands-on Plastic and Wax Modeling The plastic and wax food samples on show at eateries across Japan have long charmed visitors worldwide. To the Japanese, these ubiquitous displays are simply a practical way of reviewing a restaurant or café’s offerings before entering; while to those new to this shop-front custom, they are amazing works of pop art – colorful, realistic and fun – that visitors long to bring home as a souvenir. Participants will be driven in a Peninsula MINI Cooper to Yamato -more-

Sample Factory, a family-run business with a 60-year history making deliciously real-looking wax and plastic samples for the food industry. Each participant aged six and up can make three items: a choice of sushi, ramen, tempura, curry or pizza for a main dish; a dessert sundae; and a miniature sundae or tartlet. In a relaxed neighborhood setting with the expert Ito family as a guide, this hands-on class promises fun for all ages and an insider’s look at an industry born in Japan eight decades ago.

Furin Making: Japanese Wind Chimes for Kids Glass wind chimes brightly painted with colorful motifs are popular summer decorations in Japan. Known as furin, they are hung from porch eaves or in windows, where their clear, light tones draw attention to cooling breezes. Participants in this program will visit Shinohara Furin Honpo, a family-run business founded in 1915 and one of the few remaining studios in the country where these chimes are still fashioned by hand. Each guest will craft his or her very own furin by blowing the glass and painting the bell as a keepsake gift of the experience.
